The Sickle Upon Sekigahara

The Sickle Upon Sekigahara

This game caught my eye (price) and I thought I would give it a try because I love the lore from Japan’s feudal period. The art is ok. The story however seems weak and very much from the perspective of “western” eyes than those from that time period. However the nail in the coffin for me is how horrible the character is that you are given to experience. As much as I tried I could not relate to or have any empathy for the whiny and pathetic character who’s choices don’t really matter. If there was an option for my character to commit seppuku I would have done so immediately!!! I would not recommend anyone else have to sit through this. It is a shame since this game could have had some potential.

Tombeaux

Tombeaux

A short and (bitter)sweet dive into the American history mostly from nature’s point of view. You’ll get to watch how the last few centuries have treated a beautiful river area that is full of tiny, easily missable details. Your main objective is just to wander around and pick up items that trigger story snippets that - as far as I understood - were written or said by real people of that age. All in all the game seems to put a lot of value on historical accuracy, which is certainly a refreshing thing to see in a video game. And when all of the profits made from this game are even donated to environmental charity, I can only recommend giving this walking simulator a try!

No. Sorry. As much as Tombeaux tries to be an atmospheric walking simulator and simultaneously perform as an educational title it succeeds only in the lastly mentioned and barely. Despite of delivering some quite interesting though general knowledge how indian and western culture clashed in the past and how mankind’s ignorance can lead to the disaster, it is very short, thin and one-sided. While I acknowledge the sins of the white man, this game makes me ponder that should I be ashamed of myself for what happened or should I just shake my head and ignore the game’s far too naive and pious statement.

BATTLESCAR: Punk Was Invented By Girls

BATTLESCAR: Punk Was Invented By Girls

Got it for 56 cents as a part of a bundle. Still got disappointed.

To be fair, it is well executed in terms of visual storytelling and cinematography. Some really creative sets there!

Unfortunately, these can’t do much if the narrative and the main characters are bland and uninteresting. The abrupt and undercooked ending made the already underwhelming story - a complete waste of time for me.

Also, it is an oculus exclusive, has a good amount of gender politics at its core, and if your chapter gets interrupted, like USB disconnection (thanks AMD) you need to suffer through the whole chapter without the option to skip forward.

As a VR artist, I really enjoyed this experience. It is quite daring in terms of the format of narrative and also mixing a kind of “book” feel into the VR aesthetic. I would recommend it for any VR artists as a source of inspiration.

The story is not the best however, a bit tacky and shallow but still enjoyable.

Disappointed that it took much longer to get on Steam than on Oculus Store and also that they only support Oculus headsets, especially since there are almost no interactions (any?), so it’s not like supporting controllers of other headsets would’ve been difficult.

After watching the trailer I wasn’t sure about purchasing this game right at the release. I couldn’t really tell if it was an open world survival game or a small linear style game. Also I couldn’t find any videos online from gamer’s reviewing it. I gave it a shot and really liked it so far. It is more of a open world game. It feels very much like a winter STALKER atmosphere. There is a Story mode which isn’t available yet which I’m looking forward to checking out. From what I’ve seen so far this looks really good. Here’s a link to my review on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IDEgdqiO-o

So, let me start off by saying that I love the S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series. This is what lead to me giving this game my $10. The atmosphere of the game is good, not great, but I like it enough to preface it. The gun-play feels solid, lowish recoil and high damage as a gun should be. It is the ultimate equalizer after all. The game features a low but diverse cast of weapons like the AK74M, the AKS-74U, the 9x18 Makarov, a strange looking shotgun that reminds me of a Winchester Model 1200, I believe a Mosin-Nagant as I found 7.62x54r ammo on a soldier but haven’t actually seen the rifle, and finally a crowbar. (And to the people that will comment saying “It’S aN aK, iT hAs HiGh ReCoIl”, both variations of the AK Platform in this game run off of 5.45x39 ammunition, which is functionally similar to the 5.56 NATO cartridge, resulting in similar recoil. So get f*cked nerd)

Wow wow wow

This beautiful game is just truly SOMETHING else I gotta say.

Really cool game wish it had achievements though would make it an even cooler game. Generally the best $1.99 I’ve ever spent on anything in my entire life, very well spoken plus interesting story and also amazing game play. Will definitely spend many hours playing this game later on.

Sovietpunk: Chapter one

Sovietpunk: Chapter one

First off, the art direction is great. Secondly, the skill of the writing was adequate, if a bit too simple and without personality to make it really pop or entice you like the art.

The rest, however, is less favorable. It’s like a foundation meant for a house that won’t seem to exist until some unknown time in the future. The world has what I think is a very interesting premise. Unfortunately, it’s just all implications for now. You see parts here and there that could be fleshed out, but are left as little nods. Perhaps this game is a taste of what might be a a more exciting sequel (it’s practically advertised at the end - an end that’s feels too vague and without real impact). If this is so, 99 cents isn’t a bad price for a glorified trailer. But if the sequel is released and does not evolve the gameplay or immerse you in the world, this is a waste of money. The future in this game is bleak. Let’s hope the future of this series isn’t.
