The Frogs

The Frogs

Dionysus, the god of wine, is feeling somber. He’s turned some pirates into dolphins. He’s thrown a king or two into a cave. And now some other king in Thebes is talking smack. But none of that has cheered him up. It’s the playwrights the kids listen to these days.

Mumble poets and people using automatons to speak their lines… he’s sick of it. Back in his day the likes of Euripides could tear apart a stage and leave the crowd screaming for more. He’s decided it’s up to him to set things right.

The Frogs is a point-and-click adventure game based on the ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes. It’s a hodgepodge of ancient wit, Pythonesque animation, Renaissance artwork, and public domain classical music all wrapped up in a ball of irreverent humor from a mind way too influenced by the likes of Terry Practhett and Jasper Fforde.

Still out to sea aboard the Cleisthenes and having just read Andromeda, Dionysus is pumped and ready to get back to his theater in Athens so he can get to work improving the world of the arts for the good of everyone. But we all know it can’t be that easy… he has to go through a lot of content to make it worth the asking price.

I really want to recommend it, but at the moment it’s unplayable unless you speak Chinese. Yes, it has subtitles but not enough, there are still entire segments that are in Chinese, as well as incorrect translations (IE: Characters naming you “Light” but then calling you “Wright”).

I’d strongly urge anyone who wants to play it to wait until it’s had more time to be developed and translated.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game™

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game™

Tokyo MMXX is a sports game that ties in with the extensive sporting event in the globe, the Olympic Games. Is Tokyo MMXX just such a international event, or is it first and foremost a controller destroyer?

This especially relates to the ‘classic’ events that are inextricably linked to the Olympic Games: running, 4x100 relay, 110m hurdles and long jump. In all these sports, it is mainly a occurence of making as much momentum as attainable and by any chance striking a button in time for the sprint or leap.

I picked up the game and I’m really enjoying it. Here’s some comparisons vs. London 2012:

1. Excellent character customization. You can edit each individual part of your body. Tons of hairstyles and about 60 voices. Lipstick, facial hair and nose length.. It’s all here. You can also customize your whole country’s team. There are even character codes you can share to allow other people to use your creations.

2. The graphics are gorgeous. Highly detailed real Japanese stadiums. The engine seems a bit glitchy though, it crashes windows explorer and locks your mouse cursor. I can’t use Discord on my 2nd monitor because of it.

Do not buy this game. There are better flash player games out there. Simplistic platformer that has very little in terms of everything. The game looked totally different when first uploaded to steam by the way.

BATTLESCAR: Punk Was Invented By Girls

BATTLESCAR: Punk Was Invented By Girls

Got it for 56 cents as a part of a bundle. Still got disappointed.

To be fair, it is well executed in terms of visual storytelling and cinematography. Some really creative sets there!

Unfortunately, these can’t do much if the narrative and the main characters are bland and uninteresting. The abrupt and undercooked ending made the already underwhelming story - a complete waste of time for me.

Also, it is an oculus exclusive, has a good amount of gender politics at its core, and if your chapter gets interrupted, like USB disconnection (thanks AMD) you need to suffer through the whole chapter without the option to skip forward.

As a VR artist, I really enjoyed this experience. It is quite daring in terms of the format of narrative and also mixing a kind of “book” feel into the VR aesthetic. I would recommend it for any VR artists as a source of inspiration.

The story is not the best however, a bit tacky and shallow but still enjoyable.

Disappointed that it took much longer to get on Steam than on Oculus Store and also that they only support Oculus headsets, especially since there are almost no interactions (any?), so it’s not like supporting controllers of other headsets would’ve been difficult.

Red Rust

Red Rust

Red Rust is retro-style side-scrolling game which uniquely combines fighting mechanics with shooting mechanics. The game is heavily inspired by 8bit and 16bit hits of the 90s, but it’s being developed with the modern player in mind. Tons of great animation, hand-drawn backgrounds, variety of in-game situations and powerful soundtrack!

It’s the year 1984 and you control Agent Red (or just Red), a soviet KGB officer who has been sent to the West on a secret mission. She is an attractive but brutal and cold-hearted girl! Over the course of the game she learns to understand her own emotions and the unfamiliar world around her.
