Galactic Civilizations III

Galactic Civilizations III

NOTE: This is a review of the Final Release Candidate for the game, so it should apply to the released version.

Having been a long-time GC2 player, I eagerly signed up for the Founder’s Edition early-access over a year ago, and have followed the development of GC3 since then closely.

Let me tell you, getting a 4X game that incorporates all the features that hard-core strategy gamers want, while remaining both relevant and competitive, is really hard. As in, EXTREMELY hard. StarDock has done an excellent job with GC3. That’s not to say there still aren’t quibbles over the direction certain features have taken, but the reality is, that if you actually want to release a game, certain decisions are going to have to be taken, and you’re sure to piss off someone who wanted that feature and didn’t get it. But GC3 is a solid and entertaining game, if not a radically innovative one.

First of all it is critical to understand that the game is still in beta testing and therefore has some glitches. That said it has been pretty stable for me. (Four year old dell xps 8100 with 16gb and a 750 Ti video card). At present the plan seems to be to a go for a final release in May. There will be frequent patches before then and perhaps a beta 6 release (beta 5, with enormous additions, was released yesterday (Mar26). If you don’t like encountering bugs and reporting them to help the game, then wait for the release. Of critical importance remaining is tuning the AI to be smarter and more aggressive, imo.

Lil Tanks

Lil Tanks

A hidden gem of not only 2017, but for Shoot ‘em Up fans everywhere in my opinion!

4 out of 5

PROS: A well balanced, yet challenging shmup. Banging music. Great arcade-y and charming look. A small, yet diverse enough array of pick-ups to combine and use at your disposal that offer some imaginative use. Specials that can get you out of a sticky situation. Unlockable characters (tanks) with different playstyles. Boss Training Room (a mode I find necessary for Shmups), and difficulty mods to increase the challenge this game has to offer. Also, it has a rewarding level up system where you get permanent upgrades to your tank(s). Such as triple shot, a spread shot pattern, and depending on what tank you are using, specific artillery adhering to the characters play style.

The controls are so slow that it sometimes is physically impossible to dodge, even if you make the enemies’ bullets out between the confusing optics. You DO have a shield that prevents one hit, but it wont recharge when you lost one of your two lives, so its useless after that. The choice of weapons is also quite low.

Fast driving, regular updates, recommended.

Interesting combination of racing (you have to reach the end of the level before time runs out) and shoot ‘em up, although neither part is really prominent. You will rarely lose a level because of a timer if you just don’t stop moving forward, and the fighting part of the game only becomes interesting on bosses (which are quite different from the main game and could be really challenging sometimes).

Could be fun for speedrunning, most of the time I’ve played it I was trying to optimize my time on certain levels that I liked the most. But don’t think about it as a racing simulator. When you try to go fast your car feels more like a rocket ship, so maybe this game will fit wonky physics simulator lovers more than racing lovers.

Invaders from Dimension X

Invaders from Dimension X

Simple, but surprisingly fun board game. Lots of random results. Graphics could be better, but serviceable. Needs a skirmish mode or a way to generate random scenarios, as there are only several pre-made scenarios to choose from.

Other features I’d like to see: map board zoom in/out and co-op multiplayer mode

After some research about solo board games (Spring 2020, confinement time), I discovered Tiny Battle Publishing and was pleasantly surprised to discover this digital adaption of one of their titles. This is a fun light solo wargame, with some original ideas (the way the aliens activate is interesting). The gameplay presents an interesting mix of randomness (the dice combat, the order of Alien Activation Events) and strategy (example: you have a little bit of control on events with scouting). I had to play some times before winning my first victory on normal (and I appreciate that). Only two maps (with two levels of difficulty), but the various random factors give the game more replayability. There is no tutorial (some help accessible inside the game), it’s really useful to read the short manual. The interface is a little basic (not much options), but functional. The art on the cards is very nice, better than the illustrations of the original board game. The full price on Steam is maybe a little high (from a Canadian perspective) but there are sales (I bought it in an other store). I like the sci-fi b-movie theme and would like to see more games like this one.
