Outcasts of Orion

Outcasts of Orion

Outcasts of Orion is an autobattler roguelike combining a solid game loop and varied strategic potential to offer an engaging experience with much replayability. You draft from a variety of randomly presented abilities and units to craft your squad and discover unexpected synergies. The game does struggle a bit early on in conveying the appeal of its mechanic, but given some time, it reveals an underlying layer of depth that keeps you coming back. If you are a fan of either autobattlers or strategy roguelikes, this game is worth giving a shot.

I’ve come back to add, this game has more layers and depth than I originally imagined it may be “feigning”. On the flip side, the enemy formations are a little limited. There is deviation from the standard, but buy in large, there are a few standard formations you will find them in. That said, for the price point, what you are getting is more than fair from where I stand, and the developer seems to be active on the boards, and they seem to be keeping an eye on this game and keeping it in a good state.

In this shooter, not only weapons will help you survive, but also the jumps.

Enemies kill you with one shot. After death, the hero continues the game from last checkpoint.

You can pick up upgrades, but the weapon boxes do not highlights.

It’s difficult to understand what you can break and which item is the decor. There are a lot of enemies, the gameplay is very complex and dynamic, you do not have time to look at the environment.

Cosmica

Cosmica

The game has some polishing to do - things are a little tricky to figure out at first; there’s too much text on some screens; and I like the retro vibes from the art style, but not all the cards have unique art at this point. Once you past the initial lack of clarity though, it’s interesting and unique gameplay. The card effects are simple yet the strategy is intricate, and the deck manipulation aspect is something I haven’t experienced before - l have to think about every play, as opposed to some rogue-like deckbuilders where I often feel I’m on autopilot. I tried it on Steam Link too, and it transfers nicely to mobile. I look forward to seeing what comes of it.

Hive Jump

Hive Jump

Greetings all, I’ll preface this review by saying I kickstarted this game and played it both in Early Access and once released - so feel free to note any bias as you wish. This review is being written in regards to the current state of the game as it is today when this review is written; not to what it might be or will be down the road.

The Game

Hive Jump is a simple but fun game, where you and up to three other friends can shoot some bugs! While you can play this game in singleplayer, it is the multiplayer component of Hive Jump where this game shines. The game can be played locally if you have controllers and online support is available. Notably, challenges aren’t available at this time for multiplayer - though the developers have suggested that they may make Endless mode available for multiplayer play.

I bought this and then I played it solo for 14 hours straight, completely screwing up my sleep schedule. If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish there were more cosmetic options; there’s only four skins (five if you’re a kickstarter backer) and I can’t tell the difference between the starting skin and the last one you can unlock. I would love some armor designs that reference great classic sci-fi games, like OldCom or Doom, though I understand they can’t do perfect representations for legal reasons.

Sword of the Stars: The Pit 2

Sword of the Stars: The Pit 2

As an Early Acess review I just want to get a quick review out to players of the first Pit who wonder whether the sequel is worth it.

The successor to the first Pit is shaping up quite nicely. While it is obviously still missing quite a few features and content from its predecessor - not just because of Early Access but because it was humongous, the Developers are very responsive when it comes feedback and bug reports.

The Pit 2 goes back to the turn based dungeon crawling and once done will mean you pretty much get the first Pit plus all the extra good stuff they - and the community - can come up with.

If you liked SOTS: The Pit 1, you’ll love this! Everything is back the way you like it, but now in glorious 3d!

It’s early access, so some stuff doesn’t work yet, as to be expected.

Please support this game so it lives up to the glory of SOTS: The Pit 1!

Vector Prospector

Vector Prospector

A very fun and replayable roguelite. This is one of the only games I’ve played in the past year that I actually wanted to get back into and play again!

The randomly generated levels give a new experience each time, and all the different enemies have their own interesting way of dealing with them.

I do think the gameplay has a few flaws in the balancing, particularly with the powerups, but overall it doesn’t impede the fun too much.

Real player with 14.7 hrs in game

A perfect blend of action combat, exploration and strategy in an incredibly simple package. This is one of the best examples of how a few basic ingredients can be combined to create a brilliant dish. Overall outstanding design and solid execution. GG!

Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space

Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space

After reaching a high score now of 55,000 and 200 hrs on this game (and two roles higher than galacticorp executive) I thought I’d share what keeps me coming back.

This was my first “rogue-like” game where you are not told how to play and what the value of the items are that you find. At first this was frustrating and I was struggling to survive missions but steadily I discovered weapons, combos and strats that worked.

It is a very UNFORGIVING GAME so the learning curve is steep to get to the higher scores and if something goes wrong in combat or you judge the relative strengths of enemy fleets incorrectly, you only have a very small window of time to escape or your fleet will be wiped out. Once you engage you better hope you judged it right.

An Overlook, and Your Money.

Let me start by saying the game is great, overall. Its nothing too amazing, but a great game none the less. Its gameplay is randomly generating thus giving the plaer an indefinite replay value, so it can be easy to get your moneys worth out of this game if its your thing. But speaking of the price, its 10$ and thats pretty on edge of how much its worth through my experience. I got it for free in a giveaway myself, and its a great game, but I’d say its more around worth 5$, if its on sale buy thing game, if its not: invest into taking some more ime to see if its your cup of tea.

Xenomare

Xenomare

Xenomare is a fun little Survival Horror Roguelike it very hard and I died a lot. In this game, you have to search for items and do the task then leave. This is all done well having to avoid and hide from the enemy. There are a few maps and difficulties. I was mostly playing on easy and was still dying a lot. This game does have a big problem with the full screen being off the screen to the bottom right. I fixed this by using a program called Borderless Gaming. Overall, I recommend giving this a try if you like Survival Horror games and afford to spend $8 if not you can wait for a sale. Just know this game is still an Early Access Game so the dev is still working on it.
