The Short of it: A fun mix of many nostalgic games from decades past, infused with some modern ingenuity. AGHR does arcade / replay value correctly, and is worthwhile / fun for the price - it put a smile on my face =)

Reminds me of: If you liked Strikey Sisters , you’ll probably like Aliens Go Home Run.

I have mixed feelings about this game for a couple of reasons, one is that the balance and difficulty curve in this game is often pretty bad and, after taking a break from video games for a couple of weeks, the game has seemingly deleted my save data (I was at the final boss too). I do however definitely recommend this game and here’s why.

First of all, the game practically oozes charm. If you’re into games that are built upon a wacky or crazy idea, or even into games with a good sense of humor, then this is definitely the game for you. Who knew that bloodthirsty aliens could be fought off with baseball ey? The charm even seeps into the gameplay too. At the base of the game we have Breakout but with a completely different rule set. It actually makes Breakout engaging and fun to play, and honestly the worlds/levels that are good are REALLY GOOD. I had a blast playing the levels I actually enjoyed. And holy hell the music in this game is so damn good. I really wish there were more tracks. This is probably more of a backhanded compliment but the music is SO good that I feel like it’s wasted somewhat. Most of the bosses share the same theme and I think it would’ve been cool to have separate boss themes. But that’s just me. The art style and character designs are super cool too.

Beacon

Beacon

Updated Added 3/24/2019

Keep in mind this is a game still in beta phase, so it’s not quite finished. I’ll likely update my review as Beacon continues development.

I absolutely love top-down shooters and Beacon is no exception, in fact, it makes me appreciate them more. I’ve stuck around playing since it was released on Itch. It’s changed quite a lot, such as additions of enemies and bosses, loot areas, and of course all the bug-squashing, both technical and literal. It’s a little terrifying that there’ll be even more enemies and bosses later, which means plenty more ways to die, but hey, mutations are a thing.

Beacon has a nice low-poly artsyle, a pretty good soundtrack, and interesting writing and ideas. It has some weird design choices regarding weapons and enemies, but is over-all rewarding, if not occasionally frustrating due to a few enemies.

The gameplay is pretty typical: you can use 2 guns, have 1 equipment, 1 consumable/held passive, a grenade type, and as many passive non-held items as you want. You can smack things and dodge-roll, too.

The big game idea is that, when you die, you use DNA pickups you collect from enemies and can “mutate” next run… Or you can do what I did and beat it without mutating, which is pretty doable. Mutations change how the character looks/acts/stats and how the character reacts to items and story elements.

The Protagonist: EX-1

This is a really solid little early access tactical turn-based shooter. The graphics and audio are both pleasing and the combat and crafting are addictive and satisfying. I do wish that the gameplay was quicker and more difficult though.

All-in-all, for $13 this game is definitely worth it. Check out my full review here!–-v

Opinion and conclusion**

Overall, I find the combination of Early Access and RPG a bit difficult. Because you usually play through RPGs only once because of the story and a later re-run after Early Access is rather unlikely. I would prefer internal beta testing and a proper release here.

Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation

I think this is one of the best games ever made. Its ironic it came on the heels of the disaster which was Colonial Marines (Which I kind of like, particularly in its extended content which is where Isolation originated)

Anyway, really scary AI Alien that one shots you and does learn your play habits forcing you to constantly change things up. Excellent attention to detail of the original Alien movie props. Its a game filled with jump-scares even when you know whats coming. Game allows backtracking to previous set pieces once you have more equipment to deal with obstructions.

I’ll keep this simple: best horror game ever made, go play now.

For Alien fans: if you haven’t played this, you’re missing out on something better than Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection combined could have ever been. This is the true 3rd installment in the franchise and is a true piece of art from start to finish in all its details.

So, you have (most likley) seen allot of reviews where people mention how big of a Homestuck fan they are.

Well, when I played Hiveswap I had no clue what Homestuck was. But you don’t need to know what it is to enjoy this game as it is only loosely connected and has no impact on the plot. But I enjoyed this game so much that I went out of my way to read it (It’s apparently a webcomic) and I love it. Now that that’s out of the way, we can start this review. (Well, I start this review)

A bit of background- I’m a huge Homestuck fan. Hearing about this game immediately got me super-pumped, and while it did take 5 years, I was happy to wait for this game. I wasn’t able to back it, but I was as eager as everyone else to see this game release, and finally it was!

Now, upon first purchasing the game, I experienced some bugs. Cutscene skipping, specifically, which is a common bug with the game. It’s NOT your computer, guys!

++A fair reminder, What Pumpkin is a new developer studio, and even huge AAA-Title games, devs and studios have huge, HUGE game-breaking bugs in their games at launch. (Mass Effect, anyone?)

Slap Village: Reality Slap

Slap Village: Reality Slap

I’m giving this game an unenthusiastic thumbs up - it’s an ok game that could be pretty good with just a little more effort from the developers. I hope they take that effort in the later games so I can give the next chapters a more enthusiastic thumbs up.

I really liked the artwork and animation. Very appealing! The story was a bit jumbled up but overall interesting enough for me to continue playing through the game. I thought the characters were rather interesting. The puzzles for the most part were ok - nothing I couldn’t have eventually figured out with the standard “try everything with everything” approach. That said, I did resort to a walkthrough to get past a few areas.

Slap Village is a Wild West point-and-click adventure game where you play a young girl named Luriditas. Even though it uses a cartoon art style, it is very distinct with very detailed areas. The various characters you come across are unique, to the point where you can recognize them by the outline (and most likely their voice and how they speak). Slap Village has a very fluid and consistent animation. This game may be colourful, but it balances it well enough to where it doesn’t strain your eyes after long periods of time.

The Song Out of Space

The Song Out of Space

In 1962, during the height of the Cold War, twelve astronomers at a deep-space observatory were found dead. Because of the proximity of an important military base, two federal agents were sent to investigate any Russian involvement…

And what they found was from beyond this world.

Find out what really happened that night by exploring a town full of suspects with something to hide, and stop it from ever happening again.

Choose to play as federal agent Catherine Armstrong, a young recruit with excellent scientific skills, or as Stuart Ross, a street-smart veteran. Their unique skills and personality will change how the story unfolds.

And whatever you do, try to keep your sanity!

  • Two playable characters, each with its own story routes, dialogs, and personality.

  • 3 investigation routes, 4 endings, and dozens of secrets to reveal.

  • Unique retro visual style that mixes pixel art with photography

  • Original 80’s creepy synth soundtrack.

  • Click-and-point mechanics.

To The Light

To The Light

Quite simple 2D (RPGMaker?) RPG without leveling and with real time fights right on the map. In order to progress you have to collect gear and buffs. Be careful with item buffs because they are NOT infinite in uses and you may lose them permanently. You can use them again to temporary disable. For example, you may want to disable items when breaking large rotating crystals since they will explode, harm you and break a few buff items. And you have to break at least some of these to progress. Probably the most important buff is shield since I haven’t found where yo restock it and it opens paths blocked with spikes. A couple of secrets, a few easter eggs and multiple endings… well, kinda. You just either do everything right or end up with a wrong one. Don’t rush collecting all quantum piece, though, or you won’t be able to get 2 achievements for the wrong endings. Save often in different slots and you should be fine. Music is nice, art is pretty, story is bizarre and shown mostly with environment and short in-game animations. In case you desire more kinky stuff install both nude patches (look on community hub). Does it actually worth a full price? Not quite sure, but it ain’t bad. With good discount might worth to pick up.

This game could have been much better if it did not give conflicting information to the player.

For example some enemies you could hit, while others you can’t and you get hurt when you attack them. There is no indication that could help you identify this, so you have to experiment and lose lifes and restart or load again.

Another example is that some rocks could hurt you when you try to push them or hit them, while others don’t. Again how would the player know? many other example exists but I think these two gives a clear idea.
