The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified was not well received by mainstream reviewers, but I personally enjoyed it a lot. Overall, it feels like a stripped down version of Mass Effect, but the combat stands out above other cover shooters. The game has a lot of flaws, but I encountered no bugs in the core game. The Hangar 6 DLC, however, would freeze briefly every few seconds and rendered the game nearly unplayable.

The Bureau’s combat puts you in control of William Carter, a rather generic protagonist with a gravelly voice. Conversations in the game are carried out with a radial menu lifted directly from Mass Effect. The dialogue isn’t terribly interesting, and some of the characters facial animations appeared to not actually be finished. Their mouths move with odd robotic motions, and their eyes look eerily dead. Carter himself, and some of the other core characters have much better, albeit repetitive animations. The story is forgettable overall, but moves the game on well enough. It doesn’t come anywhere close to the likes of Mass Effect though, and the fact that the developers chose to base their game design so heavily on Mass Effect is unfortunate given the weak story. Even still, the combat made the experience worthwhile.

“The Bureau: XCOM Declassified”. There are three major aspects of the game to talk about.

For one, this game was created for XCOM fans, with an extra layer of associations from the 60’s era. The player will see all the major events of an alien invasion on Earth, from the first contact to the last repel battle, which, by all standards, will unfold on an alien ship, from where the entire invasion is organized. Keen on the setting, the player will be able to examine in detail the sequential construction of the XCOM base, go over all its iconic locations, from the headquarters and medical unit to laboratories and workshops. The player will take part in the capture of aliens and in their interrogations (without vivisection). He will have to defend the base from a full-scale attack in one moment… All in the third-view perspective. If this is not a quality fan-service, then what else? Unfortunately, not all XCOM fans appreciated the change of genre from strategy to shooter, but for me personally, the Bureau in this aspect is a very successful project.

Project Blue Book: Hidden Mysteries

Pros:

  • good artwork for scenes, hidden objects, and characters

  • interesting storyline and plot

  • cutscenes and audio that get the player immersed

  • the player is given a “why” to what they are doing, rather than just mindlessly finding objects

  • Steam achievements

  • good price compared to some other hidden object games (I’m looking at you Artifex Mundi)

Cons:

  • minor bugs

  • limited options to alter gameplay to player’s wants/needs

Pro/con (player dependent):

  • Explicitly hidden object orientated (if focusing on progressing in the game; the minigames are optional)

Well I guess it expected for Blue book hidden object.

This is a great game. Ignoring for the moment all the nostalgia feels you get playing a game set in the SotS-verse. (I do. love the original Sots Soo much), The rules are easy to pick up, and the cards are balanced enough that there is no single-win-solution. You can play MP, or Solo against AI players. I highly recommend this as a fun, lightweight game that has a lightweight price to make it easy to sucker potential conquests encourage friends to pick up for weekend gaming.

More faithful than the modern XCOM games. You can build multiple bases to your own style and needs! Multiple drop ships, not a single one and an anthill for you to save the world with. Troops are expendable like they should be! Yay!

Eagerly awaiting the sequel, and hopefully eventual Terror From the Deep spiritual successor.

Only thing letting it down is lack of final polish - quicksave works, quickload doesn’t for some reason, and there’s a few minor glitches like the camera being stuck panning in a direction after an alien turn which requires a quick reload to fix, etc. Sometimes the AI acts a little omnipotent, such as sitting in a corner in a building never moving until the moment you get close enough for it to take a fair shot at your soldiers and then dip back into cover again, even though it shouldn’t have known you were there.

Good: Mostly faithful recreation of XCOM UFO Defense but with significantly better controls and a cool Cold War setting. No class restrictions like Firaxis XCOM and fewer restrictions in general. You make your own classes. Four gun and explosive tiers.

Nice, detailed lore with the Xenopaedia. Great music overall. Overall good weapon design, with humans getting their own distinctly designed plasma weapons. Sound effects are fantastic, especially for high level weapons and explosions. They even have different sounds for the weapon reloads.

Stalin vs. Martians 4 is a massively soloplayer action game which tells a story of the conflict between Stalin and the Martians. It has a narrative-based story with a plot and rich dialogues of humorous nature, which beautifully highlight the story’s narrative-based narrative and plot.

Also Stalin vs. Martians 4 is a rather unexpected sequel to 2009’s infamous real-time strategy game. GameSpot named the original Stalin vs. Martians ‘perhaps the worst RTS game ever created’. That’s high praise. You don’t hear it every day.

Well yeah, the original Stalin vs. Martians featured some brilliant, but questionable ideas in the fields of game design, level design and some other designs as well. So we sent most of the original developers to Gulag, we’re making a proper and, which is important, playable game. It is powered by Unreal Engine. And you’re gonna like.

Could you please be a little more serious?

OK, Stalin vs. Martians 4 is an isometric action/shooter game. Which is frankly quite obvious from the screenshots and gameplay videos provided. But it must be understood, that SvM4 is not entirely about the core gameplay. It is more about the overall user experience. In a way, it can be compared to Catherine. Which is essentially a puzzle game, but in fact it is so much more than that.

Even more serious

SvM4 is built around the core gameplay of an isometric shooter, but it is conceived as a pythonesque over-the-top project, that puts a very unlikely protagonist against a very unlikely backdrop. All the time, mission after mission. It’s a sketch comedy about an evil idiotic buffoon. You have Stalin in Candyland, then he emerges in the Lovecraftian setting and fights Cthulhu, then he goes to Mars, then he travels to Ancient Greece, etc. Occasionally the game spoofs other games and introduces absurd mini-games. Sometimes it changes the genre, but within reason. And then you have crazy video intermissions (think of Red Alert or, you know, the original Stalin vs. Martians).

As mentioned above, the game is very narrative-based. Kinda like Firewatch, but, you know, better. It is also very cinematic. So we intend to provide a stable, very cinematic rate of 24 frames per second… Oh, wait. Okay, maybe more if the audience expects a certain digital fidelity in this field.
