Space Beast Terror Fright

Space Beast Terror Fright

This is a good game, but there’s a lot I wish I knew going in that will make your experience better. I wouldn’t call anything below a spoiler since the game has no story whatsoever, but if you want to go in completely without primer, skip to the bottom for my summary views.

What you need to know:

-As others have said, it’s basically Aliens: The Game, but without the license.

-Click the Help item on the title menu. Make a note of the controls and the game flow. You WILL need to know this stuff and it’s not accessible once you start a match.

Aliens. If you ever wanted a game to give you the same paranoia those marines had in the second installment of the Aliens franchise, this is probably the one to pull it off.

You have a near-dead space ship you need to nuke along with its unsightly wild alien infestation.

You have a number of datacores to access in order to unlock the reactor core so you can set the joint to nuke itself and take the skittery buggers with it.

Once you set the reactor to blow, you have a few seconds to get back to your ship so you don’t go down with this one.

Fun low poly fast paced shooter. It is not cup of tea for everyone but retro gamers like myself who have no problems with low poly graphics are bound to be hooked. My rating 7 out of 10. Recommended.

Updated Added 3/24/2019

Keep in mind this is a game still in beta phase, so it’s not quite finished. I’ll likely update my review as Beacon continues development.

I absolutely love top-down shooters and Beacon is no exception, in fact, it makes me appreciate them more. I’ve stuck around playing since it was released on Itch. It’s changed quite a lot, such as additions of enemies and bosses, loot areas, and of course all the bug-squashing, both technical and literal. It’s a little terrifying that there’ll be even more enemies and bosses later, which means plenty more ways to die, but hey, mutations are a thing.

Beacon has a nice low-poly artsyle, a pretty good soundtrack, and interesting writing and ideas. It has some weird design choices regarding weapons and enemies, but is over-all rewarding, if not occasionally frustrating due to a few enemies.

The gameplay is pretty typical: you can use 2 guns, have 1 equipment, 1 consumable/held passive, a grenade type, and as many passive non-held items as you want. You can smack things and dodge-roll, too.

The big game idea is that, when you die, you use DNA pickups you collect from enemies and can “mutate” next run… Or you can do what I did and beat it without mutating, which is pretty doable. Mutations change how the character looks/acts/stats and how the character reacts to items and story elements.

Deported: Drain the Swamp

Deported: Drain the Swamp

It’s difficult for me to write an unbiased review, any games from Crankage Games are worth it just for the dialogues alone. Heck I’d play this just to read the cutscenes' lines. If you’ve played anything from Crankage Games before, you know what to expect. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? They’re fun and they’re cheap.

This one is an arcade, old school gameplay. If you like a fun game without pretensions, just something fast and fun to play, give Deported a shot.

Today on my way home from work i stopped into a petrol station and snagged myself a chocolate bar for £1.15. I ate it in the car in just under 4 minutes, i enjoyed it. It probably did not do me any good but in the long term it wont have done me any harm.

When i got home i snagged a copy of Deported: Drain the swamp for 79p, i finished it in about half an hour. much better value than chocolate, and it was funny so it might of helped shed the choclate from my belly due to the light exercise of laughing.

Super Mutant Alien Assault

Super Mutant Alien Assault

Update almost a year later: Still awesome, buy immediately.

tl;dr

Super Mutant Alien Assault is an unashamed Super Crate Box clone, and with good reason: it’s every bit as addicting as it’s paragon, but adds it’s own twists.

words

Super Mutant Alien Assault is an arcade platformer shooter, where you play a tiny robot combating an onslaught of mutant aliens. The controls are solid (the only gripe I have is not being able to remap the d-pad to make the pad controls mimic the keyboard controls), the graphics are excellent some of the best art I’ve seen in a long while. The music is okay and the sounds are passable.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Super Mutant Alien Assault is a frantic roguelite with a huge selection of weapons and items, all wrapped up in a beautiful pixel art package and made even better by the addition of couch co-op.

I’m told that Super Mutant Alien Assault is a lot like Super Crate Box, but since I haven’t played SCB (and maybe you haven’t either), I’ll give you a quick rundown on the idea of Super Mutant Alien Assault:

The game is broken down into 3 zones (each comprised of 3 regular levels followed by a boss fight). Every level randomly presents you with one of a handful objectives ranging from surviving until a timer runs out, to shutting off devices before they catastrophically overheat, to retrieving fuel rods from one part of the map and depositing them in another location. Along the way, you’re beset by a variety of enemies (the titular aliens) and, true to form, “game over” is a single death away.

SuperOffice

SuperOffice

Dodging slow-motion shots and shooting back is really cool. And we missed a top-down game that way. The desire to play something like this motivated us to create SuperOffice.

The game begins when you wake up from a nap at your desk and find out that all your colleagues were kidnapped by aliens and that a jewel in your drawer allows you to control time.

But your office has changed a lot - aliens and monsters are everywhere chasing you. To clean up this mess you will need to use your jewel and any weapon you find along the way, from vases to throw at your enemies to swords that cut them in two.

In addition to the action, time control and a lot of weapons, SuperOffice also features bosses - the alien masters. Each one has a jewel, and getting them allows you to become even more powerful.

SuperOffice features

  • Infinite rooms: Dive into sequences of procedural generated rooms leading to alien masters.

  • Power collecting: Defeat the alien masters and get their weird jewels. You found the jewel of time on your desk drawer - what other jewels may exist?

  • Many weapons: From pistols, shotguns, machine guns, swords, knives to vases, computer monitors and your own fists.

  • Office environment: Tired of your work? Destroy monitors, work desks and report boxes - all in your time.

SuperOffice is currently being developed. Please feel free to ask us anything or give suggestions at support@growingseedgames.com .

Void Vikings

Void Vikings

An interesting game… Recommended for a fans of twin-stick shooters looking for something a little different.

The core concept of paying back a student loan by pillaging local star systems is both unique and provides some tactical options. Should you pursue an expensive yet effective degree and struggle to pay back both the principal and interest, or settle for a cheap but shoddy education and focus on upgrades? Ultimately, you need both the education and the upgrades, but the premise disguises what would otherwise be a transparent grind.

What can I say that the “About this game” section hasn’t said already? It’s pretty hard, haha. Definitely harder than the first game. But the progression also feels better! If you like old school Metroid and Mega-man, this is a fun bit of nostalgia inspired gameplay.
