11-11 Memories Retold

11-11 Memories Retold

achievements

overall, it is not a bad pick for achievement-hunters: no bugged or glitched achievements, no grind, everything is tight and simple (and achievements themselves are vary in goals), but the whole hunting is tedious. without a thoughtful detailed guide you will replay the same stages again-and-again with unskippable cutscenes. also various collectibles are hard to see because of artsy graphics. so, in a nutshell, good hunting overall, but it will be more irritating than fun

For some reason, I decided to play both “11-11 Memories Retold” and “Call of Duty: WWII” simultaneously. Now, these games might be drastically different: one is a poetic tribute to the fallen of WWI, and the other is more of a straightforward, gritty representation of WWII. But in my playthroughs, I actually found out some odd similarities between them:

  • They make you control different characters interchangeably;

  • They both have rather unnecessary flying sections;

  • They both try to educate gamers about the wars with collectables;

A beautifully crafted game. Reminiscent of Life is Strange. Stunning cell-shaded visuals, with a deep and intriguing WW1 storyline with a paranormal element. Highly recommended!

A gorgeous game. It has stunning visuals, a beautiful storyline, solid voice acting and a good soundtrack. Definitely recommended if you enjoy point-and-clicks and cinematic adventures, along with First World War settings.

Mata Hari

Mata Hari

Really enjoyed this adventure game!! It’s different than the average point-and-click adventure game in that the decisions made by the player will change how the story unfolds. Which, in turn, affects your scoring at games end. You play as Mata Hari and are recruited as a spy. As story progresses, you end up becoming a double agent. As with point-and-click adventure games, it is somewhat linear. However … the key is to strategize. You’re a spy. Stop and think. Even though some characters may suggest you go to one country, try going a different route via a different country first. There are side ‘missions’ that are at play while completing primary missions at hand. With my first playthrough, I pretty much did what I thought I was ‘supposed’ to do per the character interactions to get what I needed to further the story. My score was pretty sad at games end and I didn’t understand why. On my second playthrough, I took more time, chose different routes than suggested by characters, tried to avoid interaction with certain characters until necessary, and was delightfully surprised that I could do much more than I thought. Any adventure gamer will really enjoy this game!!!!

I’ve played the game twice by now (once for myself, once for recording) and am almost kind of surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I don’t usually play games all the way to the end if I’m not recording them (I hate boss fights and give up pretty fast if I don’t get a puzzle), but this is one of the few games which I have actually played until the end on my own.

I love the story, Mata Hari’s character, the characters she meets and the environments. Sadly cannot say much for the audio since I do not pay as much attention to that as I should. There is a lot of travelling back and forth between scenes/places however, as others have pointed out. I personally have no problem with all the travelling back and forth throughout the game, though the mini-game for it (if you choose/have to play it) does become difficult quite fast. I also enjoyed the dancing mini-game, though that one might not be the easiest or smoothest in terms of game play.

This game is pretty bad.

The controls are very wonky and difficult. The cursor just doesn’t move right, the click detection fields are not where they should be based on the pointer of the cursor, and just generally controlling Tiana and figuring out what to do next is frustrating. The minigames are terrible and unclear, and they seem to just play themselves. Overall, only the music, art and voice acting are good, but the gameplay is ROUGH. My daughter couldn’t really enjoy this one, the controls just don’t work well and there’s too much reading required for such simple gameplay.

Nature Park

Normally I would even play more before reviewing, but this isn’t even playable due to the many bugs. I ran into invisible walls, immortal monsters, bodies going through the floor, sound disappears on the loading screen, crashes on launch,.. but the graphics do seem beautiful! But then Game Guru provides good assets.

Imagine a default demo map included with the GameGuru engine used, but plagued with invisible walls and a handful of terrible looking creature assets. The creatures die and then pop back up with infinite health.

As bad as GameGuru games are, this has to be one of the absolute worst GameGuru games ever exported.

The price of $24.99 USD is absolute insanity, but this trash wasn’t uploaded onto Steam to sell copies here, it most definitely was uploaded just to sell keys on key selling websites to make a quick and easy profit.

Although I think that this isn’t a flawless game, I still think it is very good for the price. It may just be because I’ve always wanted a whole game around that Battlefield 1 campaign “Nothing is Written”. It is frantic and action-packed when it needs to be and slow and methodical when it needs to be. would recommend.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War™ / Soldats Inconnus : Mémoires de la Grande Guerre™

Valiant Hearts: The Great War™ / Soldats Inconnus : Mémoires de la Grande Guerre™

One of the best all around adventure story games released in the last few years. A mix of a beautifully composed musical score, stellar artwork, great story, impressive puzzles, and real life historical content. This game actually made me think about the collectibles and ponder the historical facts as much as I did the story at times.

Set during World War I (The Great War), Valiant Hearts gives you a look at individuals in war and how this particular group of individuals finds themselves connected. A German man married to a French woman who is forced to go back to Germany and fight. His father-in-law forced to fight for France. An American who befriends the Frenchman. A female doctor that finds herself crossing paths with all of them. Then there is Walt, the war dog, who becomes their ally, friend, and savior at times. While they all may battle for different reasons, countries, or leaders, they all care for one another. They all find ways to help one another overcome struggles, support one another in troubles, and connect to one another as humans rather than enemies.

It seems only natural that since we are in the midst of the centennial anniversary of the war that was to end all wars, a game should be released. In the gaming world, it seems that almost every war has been covered. Sadly, little to no recognition has been given to the war that launched the world into the modern age and changed how we live today. Valiant Hearts proves to be one of the first games to give a great picture of the struggles of World War I as well as a satisfying gaming experience.

In Valiant Hearts, we follow the stories of five heroes: Emile, a Frenchman; Hans, Emile’s son-in-law who is deported from France because of his German origins; Freddie, an American who volunteers and fights alongside the French in his quest for revenge; Anna, a nurse searching for her father in Belgium; and Walt, a German first aid dog that comes across the path of each of these heroes and helps any way he can. While it may seem highly coincidential how these five individuals continually come across each other’s paths, their backgrounds and motivations are very believable. The friendships that they build are genuine and felt by the players, without dialogue. Most conversations in this game are done by comic book bubbles and short distinct phrases that are spoken by the characters.

My daughter loves this game more than most of the other Disney ones she has played on Steam. The controls are very simple yet teach her some basic keyboard and mouse skills. The puzzles start out very simple and progress in a way that even a four year old can pick up without too much help, but I love how it challenges her mind. She also enjoys that she can go to the mirror and change up her hair, dresses, etc. She’s already put 15 hours into this game in just a couple of weeks and seems to always want to play it. It’s one that I also don’t mind helping her with because there are some actually fun minigames to be had.

Iron Storm

TLDR: Very buggy, but okay for the most part. Really cool premise and atmosphere. Would recommend to those who enjoy Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Story/Overall Atmosphere:

World War 1 never ended. It has continued on to the 1960’s. There have been advancements in technology, but not by allot. The atmosphere is quite nice. Someone said the game looks ugly because it’s just too brown, but I strongly disagree. I think it adds to the atmosphere of the game. I really like the entire concept and atmosphere all together. It’s really good stuff.

I’ve read a number of reveiws of this game, mostly negative. Quite frankly I don’t understand why. I’ve owned the disk version of this game for some time now and have played it nearly a dozen times. It is what I like to call one of my “perennial favorites”, or more specifically, one of those games I play every couple of years. Now having picked it up on Steam for a mere $1.03 I’m enjoying it yet again.

Iron Storm has immersive atmosphere, cool weapons and satisfying, challenging combat. The story, while nothing particularly original manages to drag me in and keep me there. You embark on a seemingly simple objective but circumstance makes the goal anything but simple. There are some tricky parts that leave you wondering what you are supposed to do or where to go but they are few and once figured out pose no problem.

I think this may well be the greatest game ever made. Yes, the controls are clunky as all get out. Yes, for people used to today’s games the ultra-high-tech-for-1997-digital-rotoscoping technique looks extremely antiquated. Yes, you’re dropped into the game with no idea what to do, and you’re going to fail. A lot. But at the same time “The Last Express” includes:

  • Probably the best-developed characters in any adventure game I’ve yet played (the weakest is arguably Robert Cath, who the player controls, but even he has an intriguing and irritatingly-largely-unrevealed-due-to-lack-of-a-sequel backstory). By the end of the game you know what they want and what makes most of them tick, and since certain bad things are more or less guaranteed to happen to a number of them the result is the equivalent of an emotional shovel to the face.

Ahead of its time but stuck in the past

First read about this game way back when it came out, in a magazine I still have, where the reviewer was left in complete awe because of unique design for an adventure game. Ever since it occupied a small cluster of neurons in the back of my head, waiting for me to play it and its moment to shine. I should say I never played the original so my review will only address this 2013 port, with some inferior exceptions others have noticed.

It plays like Myst, from 1st person perspective with static scenes as you move around, but is set in realistic environment of an vintage luxury passenger train called Orient Express. The whole game takes place in the same 4-5 vagon carts with beautifully rendered backgrounds. You move by clicking edges of screen with mouse cursor that contextually changes functions to forward, backward and left or right turn, with interaction prompts for opening doors and object/NPC interaction.
