Black Mirror

Black Mirror

Well, so here I am. Feeling like I want to play good point’and’click games again. Like an old times. My whole childhood was filled with a bunch of good p’n’c. I remember how I was sitiing on the last lesson at school already dreaming about coming to my place, eating my lunch and solving different puzzles in another adventure, drinking mommy’s cocoa.

It was a golden era. If you was stuck - you was stuck. No internet solutions, no easy-get walkthroughs. Like literally, the only source of help you could rely on was your schoolmates. Unfortunately, I was surrounded with kids which were fond of strategy games and CS 1.6, so I was all alone in my adventures.

STORY

Truthfully, I enjoyed the story. I’m gauging this by the fact that I never got tired of it. Often times with adventure games I find myself slowly losing interest as I go through the motions of inventory combinations or pixel hunting. It can ruin a game for me and sometimes I’ll even nod off while playing if the story doesn’t move along much. I had none of that here. Several years ago I played Black Mirror II and I generally prefer this story, even though the last quarter of Black Mirror II was pretty damned good. I give high praise to the main voice actor for keeping me engaged. The voice actors give the story more depth than it might otherwise have. Was it amazing? Absolutely not. Did it retell the game stories from before? Not at all, this is a new take on the series. My only complaint is the ending could have been more dramatic.

Devil In The Capital

Devil In The Capital

Another anti-European game from RSK. They begin with some newspaper articles about how Britain interfered in their “democratic elections” because Iran nationalized their oil. Our hero chuckled that the West will no longer get their “oil benefits” from Iran. Considering all the oil equipment and the oil itself was purchased by the British for millions of pounds, I wouldn’t exactly call that charity. The last game forced a connection to the murders with Britain and America to trash those countries. This game does it again by having a British boarding house owner held responsible for things found in his tenants' rooms. RSK claims the game is based on historical events. Are we to believe that the British staged a bunch of murders to try to distract Iranians from the overthrow of their government? If that’s true, Persians must really have short attention spans.

This was like reading a book. You could really only take things in 1 direction. i often felt confused as to what to do next. nothing felt satisfying and the story wasn’t all that engaging. It just wasn’t my thing. I barely spent any money on this but it still wasn’t worth it. I would recommend finding some other way to spend your time.

Started with Dies Irae : Amantes Amentes and then this game. I am really glad that Light decided to be communicative with its west fandom, all those giveaway are really such a good plan in interacting with their fandom, something company barely do considering Dies Irae is pretty famous as VN. Worth to spend your time and money for this

Something draws my interest more when Wilhelm said the Kiss In The Dark Cocktail is using cow blood as fertilizer. This shows that LDO has other way of living aside from displaying their magic power Nazi. Part of funny way to describe the heroine, Claudia Jerusalem, she is pure that you can smell Church’s wax on her lmao. Since that meeting, Bey decides to keep Claudia as his for the sake of eating quality over quantity of the soul, in other words to devour her.

An excellent side story to the original, with the rater bold move of having Wilhelm as the protagonist. The author though still displays his ability to get you engaged in the stories of even obviously evil and insane characters, even more so than in the original story.

The artwork and visual effects has also seen a jump in impressiveness, translation quality is also excellent.

A wild ride just like the original.

Murder In Tehran’s Alleys 2016

Murder In Tehran’s Alleys 2016

The coding is a bit buggy, but nothing game-breaking. The story itself was very interesting and I enjoyed the investigative procedure very much. If you didn’t know what to do next, just check the PDA as it gives a narration of what currently just occurred and what you should do next. Some people wished the voice acting was in English, but I really liked that it was in the native language. I think it would have been weird actually if everyone spoke in English since this was set in Tehran, Iran. The English translation for the subtitles wasn’t the best, but you can easily understand what they meant. Puzzles are pretty easy. Overall, I recommend this game if you like crime investigation adventure games.

Pembrey

Pembrey

In Short: A hidden gem in the rough. Buggy and short, but has a lot of heart and interesting story that keeps you playing.

https://youtu.be/8NsDT13RYMA

I originally purchased and played Pembrey when it first came out, but mistakenly early. It was only partially done, and I hadn’t even gotten to the good part yet! I could tell there was a decent game there, and eagerly awaited when it would be released in full.

That day has come.

I streamed it, and now that I was able to experience the story in full, I can say I still enjoyed the heart of the game, and found it fun as well as intriguing. Enough to make me want more of the story and more games from this dev.

Extremely boring.

I really liked the thought of needing to search around for clues and having that save your game, but it went to waste because it wasn’t really used in the story. I did like the art and some of the music, but a lot of times there was just silence, not even white noise or footsteps. I wasn’t even scared either, and I scare quite easily- the only time I ever jumped or got anxiety was those loud screaming noises because I was wearing headphones. One of the things that really pissed me off was when there was a choice- hide or keep climbing. Spoiler alert: the same thing happens regardless of your choice.

Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk/잿빛매의 사이키델리카/灰鷹幻境

Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk/잿빛매의 사이키델리카/灰鷹幻境

One of the best otome games I’ve played. To me it’s up there with Hakuoki, Nameless and, of course, the other Psychedelica game. I think I like this even more than Black Butterfly (it could also be a recency bias).

Like the Black Butterfly, Ashen Hawk is all about story and characters. But it’s not fair to say that romance takes a back seat. Standard romantic routes, though, are compressed into various endings, but there’s plenty of romance strewn across common route and episodes. And focusing on story and characters is what make those romantic moments shine even more. Both of Psychedelica games are definitely not your standard otoge, but that’s a plus in my book. Common route is not just a prelude into character paths, but is actually the whole story. This approach enables the story to really breath, develop organically and synthesize all the elements. It transcends the harem structure of most visual novels and that disjointed feel a lot of them have. So, common route all the way to the true/heroine ending is THE story and I recommend going for that ending first. It will not answer every question and aspect but is the most cathartic and satisfying.

Wow, I have to much to say about this visual novel. Though firstly, I would like to talk about it’s relation to Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly (which I will just refer to as Black Butterfly). I saw several others around here saying you don’t need to play Black Butterfly in order to play this one. While I do mostly agree with that, you will come across a lot of direct references to Black Butterfly here. In fact, one of the endings here will mostly only be understood after playing Black Butterfly.

Rainyday

Rainyday

A promising prologue.

As the player steps into the shoes of our main character the game immediately surrounds him with a purposeful atmosphere familiar from old detective stories. You have a dirty apartment, some alcoholism, past work related injury and a dead body. On top of it all it keeps raining all the time.

In the prologue the player tries to make sense of the evidence surrounding a death of a housemaid.

The prologue quite short but yet rather captivating. We have a nice set of dialog, different characters, lots of objects to inspect and a generally atmospheric milieu. Some adult themes such as a dead body, pharmaceutical drugs and alcohol are included but hey, it’s a detective game.

A new fledgling indie developer is trying to spread his wings with this sierra homage top down crime noir. Within seconds, you should be swept up into the hearty clasp of a nostalgic cult mystery and the foreboding shadowy practice of human trafficking and the string of victims that they will leave in their wake.

Currently there is only a prologue and episode 1 available with another 2 episodes promised. Each episode promising about 20 minutes of entertainment with each one promising to be more controversial and grisly than its predecessor.
