Titeuf: Mega Party

Decent game to play with friends. Story a bit annoying when you don’t know what to do, since the game doesn’t tell you much, but the minigames are actually worth it.

A Boy and His Blob

A Boy and His Blob

I never played the original, so I express no nostalgia bias when I say…. If you value your time and money, do not play this game.

The charming graphics hide an unforgiving game with unresponsive controls and terrible level design. A Boy and His Blob is far, far, too long, also. The first level fools you into believing innocent fun is afoot. Don’t be deceived. There’s a reason players aren’t completing most of the available achievements: This game is brutal and unforgiving… and not in the “Raiden” shoot-em-up type of way. Further, This game is boring - brutally boring, and progressing through each level is a chore you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. In many of the levels it’s impossible to see where you’re going until you’re dead - a hallmark of awful level design. The challenge stages take the wretched level design to 11, and make you start over from the beginning of the level.

I remember renting the original “A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia” NES game in 1990. It was cute, but ultimately frustrating, from what I recall. However, the premise (i.e., feeding a blob jelly beans in order to have him transform) was great – so great, in fact, that the premise was retained but everything else was discarded for the 2009 remake on the Wii. “Remake” isn’t quite right; as movies have done of late, the new “A Boy and His Blob” was a reimagining. The PC version on Steam is a port of the 2009 version, not the original NES version. History lesson over.

Castle of Illusion

Castle of Illusion

One of the best remakes I’ve ever played.

The original game was one of the most iconic titles on the Sega Genesis, it was 1990 so the Sonic games weren’t released yet. The colorful graphics, big Mickey sprite and super detailed animation were an spectacle for that period in time when most people were used to simple 8 bit graphics. Plus, the gameplay was solid and the Disney magic was captured perfectly.

This remake impressed me since it managed to accurately retain the essence of the original despite the graphics modernization and the little gameplay changes.

Let me start by saying that the old school Castle of Illusion on Genesis / Mega Drive remains one of my favorite platformers today.

Let me also say that I was hugely, hugely, hugely disappoint by DuckTales Remastered, which I found boring and lazily done.

So I went into this with low expectations … I mean, how do you live up to a classic? Not sure it’s possible, but I was extremely please with the updated Castle of Illusion on Steam. Great game. It does an excellent job taking the source material as inspiration and trying to update it without shitting all over it.

DuckTales: Remastered

DuckTales: Remastered

Pogo everything. Leave no survivors.

I was too young to play Capcom’s Ducktales when it originally came to the NES back in 1990 (I was two years old then), but I made up for it by playing the game constantly when it was available on the NEStalgia online emulator a few years back.

What a treat, then, that Ducktales Remastered (a port/remake developed by Wayforward Technologies) is light-years ahead of the original version. I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that this is a faithful remake that does justice to the license while throwing a boatload of extra content for longtime fans.

I’m downvoting this game with extreme prejudice because it has a crash bug which has been left unaddressed for over a year: players who have Nvidia cards with up-to-date drivers will find that the game will always freeze on the final boss. It seems that some recent version of Nvidia drivers broke some graphic effects in late-game cutscenes. Unfortunately, the rights to this game are a royal cluster of bureaucracy between Disney, CAPCOM, and WayForward, and nobody seems interested in addressing the issue, or even acknowledging that this game exists anymore. Basically, if you don’t have access to a PC without an Nvidia card, do not buy this game, as you will not be able to finish it without skipping specific cutscenes and using weird workarounds.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition

I would recommend you not to read too much about the game. Play the demo first, it’s a good representation.

If you, after completing the demo find the game interesting and, want to continue your experience I would suggest that you back up your saves, before the purchase, because Steam will just delete it all upon installation of the full game.

I was a bit sceptical about the game at first, especially in regards to the new boy’ish look of Gabriel Knight and this silly southern voice that is being used, but also in regard to the changes of design. It took me awhile to get past that change and I was just barely ahead of it at the end of the demo.

I was afraid something like this would happen when playing a 20th anniversary edition… Gabriel Knight: Sins of the fathers was the first adventure from Gabriel (the Shadowhunter) in 1993 and the first game created by Jane Jensen.

At the time it was a fantastic game, it was one of the first games to include a dark subject, not exactly suited for kids, not because of the violence or blood (that was something that other games always had) but also because of the dark, dramatic, almost ghotic nature of the main story and characters. Something different at the time (and still to this day) was the research that jane did for these games, mixing historical facts, real places, with of course a good dose of fiction to create her own story, and not just an historical retelling. It was always fun (and amazing) to go looking for these places after finishing the game, and see how much of the real world was put into the story. For me the most amazing story of all that jane had created was the one for Gabriel Knight: the Beast within, the second game, about the legend of king Ludwig II and Richard Wagner.

Maniac Mansion

Maniac Mansion

“Maniac Mansion” is one of the first point and click adventures of LucasArts (published back in 1987) and one of the games that set the tone at the beginning of the genre’s golden era. Beautiful colorful aesthetics, clever puzzles, multiple characters, fantastic humor and iconic music are some of its characteristics. Yet, it’s gameplay logic is still a little bit primitive compared to the following LucasArts' games and I’m not a big fun of deaths and dead ends. But it is one the most classical games out there so you have to play it.

Real player with 13.6 hrs in game

LucasArts classic wacky adventure and a predecessor of an even bigger classic – Day of The Tentacle. Nostalgic point’n’click not without its flaws.

The set-up is simple and is largely left off-screen – you and a few of your friends (which you get to choose at the beginning of the game) need to rescue your girlfriend Sandy from being kidnapped by Dr. Fred for experiments. Starting at the gate of not-very-maniac-looking-yet mansion, you’re making your way in to find a place that manages to have nuclear reactor, gigantic telescope, man-eating plant and strange, walking tentacles all under the same roof. Oh, and there is a basement. In which you, no doubt, will be held on multiple occasions. So… Where’s Sandy? Why is everyone talking about some meteor? How can a tentacle be depressed? All these questions will be answered as you’re finding your way around a strange house, trying to avoid its mad inhabitants, opening lots and lots of doors and collecting a hell of a lot of useless stuff, in the best point’n’click fashion.

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty Review

This is my review/opinion on the new Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! Before you start you may want to watch the lovely trailer here if you haven’t already.

You can also watch the trailer to Alf’s Escape here if you want to since I will be talking a little bit about it. Thank you and enjoy!

Intro

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is remaster of the original masterpiece Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee which was developed by Oddworld Inhabitants back in 1997 which you can buy here .

I love the Oddworld series. I own all of the games in the series, and in fact have bought Abe’s Oddyssee four times - once for Playstation, once for PC, once on GOG.com and again on Steam. Now I’ve effectively bought it a fifth time in the shape of New’n’Tasty.

First of all, it looks absolutely stunning. JAW have managed to capture the look and style of the original game whilst bringing it bang up to date - the new character animations are gorgeous, background effects really add to the atmosphere, and the 3D effects work without being distracting.

Shadowgate

Journey once more into the castle Shadowgate

Do you remember having a favorite video game that it seemed not many other people fully appreciated? One that you were completely obsessed with, spent tons of time with played over and over again, gathered every bit of information on it that you could? For some people, the games that they find themselves so devoted to end up becoming big series, with numerous sequels. For others, those games get periodic sequels and live on. And for yet others those games just sort of fade away, becoming forgotten in time.

Shadowgate is a re-imagining of the point-and-click adventure game released almost three decades ago, under the same name, on NES and Mac. Given these origins, your motivations for venturing into Castle Shadowgate are about what you would expect: you are a hero who must defeat an evil warlock. The graphics, music and the majority of puzzles have been reworked; new, voice-acted cutscenes and story elements have been peppered throughout; while the mysterious atmosphere and memorable locations of the original remain intact, along with the option to use the retro soundtrack.

Jordan Mechner, Steve Meretzky, Roberta Williams…Eric Chahi.

If you don’t know who Eric Chahi is, or why I breathe his name with a palpable aura of reverence, buy this game immediately. This is an enduring piece of computer game history that remains as beautiful, stark, striking and unique today as it was when it burst onto the scene in 1991. This is a landmark computer game.

So what, you say? So was Doom, and very few of us are still playing it today. So was DONKEY.BAS, the famous early IBM game with the racecar switching lanes to avoid burros in the road. So was the Crowther and Woods Adventure. The history of computer games is littered with significant milestones, making for a very cluttered highway to the past. Right. I understand. But when you find one that’s still fresh and avant-garde exactly as it is, today? You could drop Another World into the indie game market anew, and it’d still turn heads and inspire conversations. The adjective “timeless” is overused, but this game is truly timeless.
