Milo and the Magpies

Milo and the Magpies

I have been a huge fan of the Rusty Lake & Cube Escape series, and was excited when I heard news of this game. Because of my experiences from those games, I was constantly on the lookout for something “wrong” and half-expecting something scary to happen… I gave myself more scares than the game intended, for sure.

To my pleasant surprise, Milo and the Magpies was far friendlier to those as jumpy as I am - it really is a heart-warming story with fun, casual puzzles to solve along the way. It is rather short and the plot is very simple, but to me was excellent for its price and what it was intended to be.

Disclosure: I am one of the translators for Milo and the Magpies.

Absolutely lovely game. While I’m a big fan of the surreal and sometimes gruesome atmosphere and tone of Rusty Lake games I really loved the hand painted scenes, relaxing music and wholesome story (Especially the ending) and didn’t realize how much I missed this type of games. Some puzzles can be a bit tricky at first, but they are certainly doable, and it comes with a very handy walkthrough if needed.

Completely recommended for both old and young players, either newcomers or experienced in the genre, you won’t be disappointed.

If you like Point ‘n’ Click games and/or dinosaurs, this game is awesome!

Good:

-I love dinos and this game is awesome for dino fans for multiple reasons. Firstly, they don’t use the classics but instead most dinosaurs are species you won’t find in most popular media(some even I didn’t know yet!). Secondly, every dino species (plus other animals, plants and more) are detailed in an encyclopedia that you can choose to read. Fun for kids to read!

-The style is made to remind you of games like Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam, which I consider a plus as I played them a lot as a kid.

Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer

Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer

Before this game, my only real Jerma exposure was the dollhouse stream… so I’m writing this review from the POV of somebody that just wants a fun game. And I gotta say - I really feel like Curse of the Late Streamer delivers.

The puzzles are never overly challenging, and I say this as someone who generally sucks at point-and-clicks. Everything feels fair. And here’s my advice if you get stuck on a puzzle: just go do something else. There’s plenty to explore and work towards.

It is really really cool how much original art is in this game, too. Characters that are (presumably, again I am a newcomer) all drawn from Jerma lore? 3D environments that both evoke old-school game memories and feel like a real (virtual) space that this guy could live in? The dog is adorable?? Seriously, such an impressive amount of effort.

Primordia

Primordia

Watching a good Science fiction movie was always a rare experience to have, even more so an original one….

Playing a good and original Science fiction game….that’s even less probable, it feels like finding a very special treasure.

Good words have been around for Primordia since it came out in 2012 (I’m now playing it for the first time in 2017) and i can say it’s all pretty much justified.

The game has a good story, with interesting characters, both main and secondary ones. It has an interesting beginning, a well handled middle and an ending ( and a pretty good one at that, although that depends on which ending you get).

Bought in a bundle without knowing much about it except it’s published by Wadjet Eye Games and another game in the bundle was Gemini Rue (which by body required at the time). I stuck gold because what we have here is a high quality four-man (+Dave as producer / voice caster) point & click adventure game with gorgeous 320x200 graphic.

Story is set in post apocalyptic, distant future cyberpunk world which is a rich environment for imaginative locations, story, characters. You name it. Overall story is pretty solid and will satisfy even the most seasoned adventure players.

Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside

Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It’s Dark Outside

There are too many reasons why this game is THE BEST game that you could ever buy on steam.

There is so much that I can say about this game, but I will talk about the best aspects of the game.

The open world aspect of this game is incredible. From scene to scene, each area has something new to see and experience, from throwing pennies in a well to finding gold in the mines. It isn’t a straightforward gaming experience, you can take your time and not be bugged by AI characters constantly telling to you move on with the game.

Pajama Sam, a name that I have known for my entire life. I have played the series since the beginning purchasing all of them at my local Costco ever since I first opened this on christmas of 1997. I would leave our 90’s computer on all day and constantly go back and play Pajama Sam. I continually go back and replay this amazing game through all the years. I lost the disks of my Pajama Sam games so when I saw this on steam I had to buy it. Yes it is a children’s game but it will always be one of my favorite games of all time. If you haven’t played it I highly recommend it, whether it is for you or for a child. Every child should play this game.

Blackwell Epiphany

Blackwell Epiphany

Rosangela Blackwell is a struggling author living in New York, and a medium. Enter Joey Mallone, a ghost and spirit guide tied to the female members of the Blackwell family. When Rosa’s aunt, Lauren Blackwell, passes after being in a coma for decades, Joey is ‘released’ from Lauren and enters Rosa’s life. Details are revealed throughout the five installments of the Blackwell series regarding the female members of the Blackwell family, how Joey came to be, what happened to Aunt Lauren to trap her in a comatose state, etc. Together, Rosa and Joey seek out and help tormented ghosts trapped in the physical world cross over to “the other side” throughout the series.

This fifth and final installment, Epiphany, is the culmination of all that the Blackwell series has been building up to. The art has really come into its own after a poor showing in the last game, and a focus on exterior locations has resulted in some truly beautiful backgrounds. Puzzles feel completely natural which could be an effect of the game design changing so little between Epiphany and Deception or simply from the fine tuning done over the past four games.

This is also by far the longest of the Blackwell games. The story focuses on the job ahead of our heroes this time rather than mystery of the duty itself, but still manages to be epic. As a spirit medium, Rosangela is involved in the most important moment of each of these peoples' lives (existences), which is brought home by another string of excellent voice performances. Those individual stories are then woven together to create something that not only hits harder than it ever could have alone but also provides answers to what has become the Blackwell legacy.

Sam & Max Hit the Road

Sam & Max Hit the Road

It’s Sam & Max’s first Adventure made for MS-DOS/Windows 3.1/95/98 PCs & is considered one of the best Inventory Adventure games created. Sam & Max Hit the Road is based on a 1989 Comic Adventure of the Freelance Police called: “Sam & Max On the Road”. The Sam & Max Franchise had a Cartoon Series that used to air on Fox Kids from 1997-1998 on the Fox Network Channels. Sam & Max are Dog & Bunny who operate as a Freelance Police Force.

In this adventure, Sam & Max have been tasked by the Commissioner to locate a Bigfoot that’s gone missing from a local carnival, but along the way, they run into all sorts of Zany things that makes the game feel & look fun leading into an ending that makes complete sense of the situation or not at all.

This was a surprise find for me.

I was looking for a different sort of game, one that hadn’t been over-recommended by Steam’s algorithm– and by almost impossible chance I stumbled on this. Not only did I get the sense that this was a very old game, but by reading its initial release was back in 1993– and by staring at its graphics– I immediately understood.

This game is a classic. (Unquestionably).

And Sam & Max are a familiar pair. I’ve heard of them but have never formally introduced myself to their video game counterparts.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

A brief overview…

Goal: To stop an evil triangle from taking over the world.

Method: Travel back in time to the day before so that you can stop the triangle from becoming evil in the first place. However, the majority of the story revolves around blowing a large sum of money on a shopping channel product, and finding sources of electricity that you can plug toilets into.

Heroes: The true heroes of this game are a metalhead who has zero book smarts, a trainee doctor who cannot be trusted with her own scalpel, and that nerd from the first game who used to be a coward. This trio receives help along the way from an ex-villain mad scientist, the founding fathers, a hamster and a dead guy.

My previous article on my experiences with working on Day of the Tentacle Remastered cover a lot of my own history with the game, but don’t dive deep into my feelings about the remastered edition itself - after all, the game was more or less finished before I came onboard and I had plenty of time to play through it before I started working on it.

Re-creating low fidelity assets with greater detail removes a degree of ambiguity that different players invariably fill with different impressions. To one person, a few pixels here, might be interpreted as a smooth shape, while to another, the pixel edges define something more jagged - are the ends of Laverne’s fingers square or rounded? Are outlines fixed or varying width?

FoxTail

FoxTail

(I’ve played all three early-access ones of supposedly eight chapters.)

“FoxTail” is a click-n-did-you-point adventure game that warms your heart with its beautiful pixel art and very charming world design.

The pace is slow, and the plot revolves around – not an alien conspiracy, not a zombie pirate, not a murder mystery, but – young Leah visiting her grandmother during a vacation. And the heartfelt memories of the grandfather who left the adolescent fox his diary. How lovely.

The puzzles so far are all fair and manageable. Nothing as aggravating as a pixel hunt or inexplicable solution. One might get stuck but can figure it out eventually if you do the ol' “talk to everyone and try everything with everything”. And some puzzles feature multiple solutions, too. Plus, the diary helps keep track of the story and goals.

For a couple years this was one of the only games I was patiently waited for to be released, and during that time I was almost sure it would be cancelled.

I will say I was extremely hyped when it appeared on the steam page, but then disappointed to see we were only getting the first chapter and not the complete experience.

But, the fact the game is here at all is a miracle to be appreciated.

For the first chapter we do have access to - FoxTail is as promising as I hoped it would be.

The atmosphere is calm and pastoral, with lots of food and flower items to pick up, and Leah and her grandma are obviously a family with lots of memories in the house and surrounding forest. There’s one scene in particular, a flashback that I won’t spoil, that really hits the nostalgia of childhood.
