DUDE! I thought i’d never play the full version of this game!

Back in the old days that was the best we could afford to play since they didn’t have Virtua Cop or GunBlade NY for PC…

I played the demo version from a PC Gamer disc back in 95. Back then this game was jaw dropping to look at compared to a lot of other games. I remember feeling like it was the pinnacle of graphics technology and there wasn’t much else to go at that point. (I was a kid cut me some slack :) )

For me this is just a wonderful trip down nostalgia lane. But this will not be for everyone.

If you like on rails shooters and retro games, then give it shot. The campy cheese-ball story line and cut scenes just adds to its charm.

Panzer Dragoon: Remake

Panzer Dragoon: Remake

I discover Panzer Dragoon in 2003, when Orta, the fourth episode launched on the original X-Box. Back then I was amazed by the level of creativity of this game in terms of esthetism, soundtrack, lore, and gameplay. This title offered to the players who completed it in the Pandora’s Box the first opus released on the Sega Saturn in 1995. Of course, I tried it, if only to know what were the roots of one of my favorite title on the first Microsoft system. Sure, it already had aged quite a bit at the time, but It hadn’t take me long to fully realize the magic was already there.

When Panzer Dragoon: Remake launched on Nintendo Switch over a year ago, the game wasn’t in the best shape. Numerous technical issues plagued the game, along with missing features, leading to Forever Entertainment releasing a series of patches throughout 2020. Now that the game has stabilised, we’re in a better position to look at how Panzer Dragoon: Remake holds up as a finished game.

Graphics

MegaPixel Studio, who developed the game, is a relatively small studio and used the Unity engine to develop the game. The result is a game that looks good, but isn’t AAA quality, it’s something between an AAA and indie game. But if you keep your expectations with the mindset that this is smaller budget game, you can expect to play and be impressed by a modern looking version of the original Panzer Dragoon.

Cyberia

Cyberia

A great classic which aged terribly.

This Cyberpunk themed Action/Adventure augments rail shooter action scenes with adventure exploration and puzzle elements for an enjoyable, albeit all too brief experience. An odd feature is the game having 2 difficulty settings, one for “Arcade” and the other for “Puzzle”, both scaling from 1-3. One can not set both difficulties to “1” as the game informs you would be “too easy”.

Highs:

A cheap classic.

A fine historical blast from the past.

Fun rail shooter bits.

It’s EXACTLY as I remember, not better or worse – I suppose it deserves to be called a graphic adventure game with action scenes. The voice acting is cheesy, the 1990s CGI looks hideous and plastic, you probably die a lot and…

There’s this element of masochism involved in playing Cyberia – take one late puzzle disguised as an action sequence, for instance, where you have to pick the right doors and eliminate enemies in the rooms so you can proceed. Pick a wrong door and you get a video clip of you getting shot in the back. Repeat a couple of times. For some reason, you don’t get a save point nearer to it, so you have to rinse and repeat through a different puzzle as well.

Tumbleweed Express

Tumbleweed Express

Hi, I just played this game and I can’t believe it.

People are noting that it’s “ONLY 7-10 Hours of Gameplay”.

Only? The game is $5. The cheapest McDonalds meal you can buy is $5.69. Have you ever eaten a Mc Donald’s meal for 7-10 hours? More like 10 minutes. Have you ever played a pinball game for 10 hours with $5? Have you ever done ANYTHING for 10 hours of entertainment for $5? They are basically charging you .50/hr to play this game.

The art style is very, VERY good. You are treated to authentic train maps and rotating items in the game during loading screens (like in Skyrim). The voice acting is really cute and amusing, and MAN the music. The music is absolutely phenomenal, it’s BETTER than the music in most professionally released games.

Real player with 24.3 hrs in game

Tumbleweed Express is a rail shooter with tower defense elements. A rail shooter where you protect a train on rails….yup. Anyways, you control a 360 degree rotating turret on top of a caboose in an old west steampunk world where blimps and dirigibles have overtaken railroads as the main method of cargo transportation. You inherit the tumbleweed express from a dead family member and as the new owner it’s your job to ride the rails to glory.

The graphics fit the theme of the game prefectly and so does the music. It also sounds like the narrator is using a fake southern accent and that’s a bit off-putting. Game progression is stage based with the option to replay each stage as many times as you want. I’m glad you’re able to do this because the difficulty curve is sharp and soon enough you’ll become overwhelmed by all the crap coming at ya from all around ya. Upgrades include cool stuff like being able to buy more cars for your train so you can add automated turrets. You can also hire engineers that’ll repair your traincars and different types of gunners that will also shoot stuff on their own. There’s also turret upgrades and different types of turrets you can purchase such as cannons. I’m not too far in it but it looks like there’s a lot to this game. Each stage has multiple side-objectives you can enable to get a bigger reward if you complete them however it also increases the difficulty of the stage. And since you can replay each stage you can experiment with those to see if the risk is worth the reward. There are secrets hidden in each stage too that will uncover more of the story but they aren’t necessary.

(Disclaimer: I bought this game full price day 1. I did not receive this game for free.)

On with the review…

To start…

A brief description of Vanguard Knights can be summarized with the following statement…

A bullet-hell game in a Star Fox style 3D rail-shooter environment.

I bought this game because I am a huge fan of Star Fox style games. However, after playing through the game for the first time, I quickly realized that it was more than I could handle. Because of this, I had to have a skilled friend play through the game in front of me. I made sure that I played through as far as I could go before having my friend play it for me. This review is based on both experiences.

3D Bullet Hell Space Shooter with linear rail levels or open arena levels like Star Fox and an Ikaruga color switch system which lets you absorb enemy projectiles that match your current ship’s color. Much like Ikaruga it starts off easy but it will quickly have you scrambling as some fights involve needing to dodge enemy projectiles, color coded walls and objects, and needing to balance a crosshair on constantly moving enemy weak points, it makes for some very intense boss fights and it’s where the game truly shines the most, especially if one is fond of over the top shmup bosses. Despite the difficulty the game has a generous checkpoint system so dying to a rough pattern or section won’t set you back too far, the main difficulty comes from learning the game and improving on boss fights and levels and getting good rankings on levels. Anyone that grew up with arcade titles should find it easy to settle in. For 10 dollars you can’t go wrong, pick it up on a lazy afternoon and you’re in a for a fun ride.

This is a mix of a VR rollercoaster with some added gameplay elements. You’ll be reaching around, ducking, slowing the cart, throwing rocks to break barriers and bombs to explode pipes. You have to survive to the end and have enough gems to safely escape.

I want to estimate it takes 8-10 minutes (I only got to the end once, but didn’t time it). However, you’ll probably die at least a time or two before pulling that off. Unfortunately, the ride itself isn’t all that memorable. The gameplay elements aren’t interesting enough either.

i find the game simple and easy to pick up, a fun little roller coaster ride to pass the time.

A top down shooter that reminds me of Sunset Riders from consoles long ago. Take a look at my video posted above to get a sense of gameplay. Be mindful to take note of the control scheme listed on the store page as there are no in game reminders. I found myself jabbing at the keyboard trying to find out but not before being murdered by the first enemy over and over again. I will say that the pace of the game is a bit slow and because of that level progression is very slow. I spent 20 minutes on mission 2 and never completed it.

Cyberia 2: Resurrection

Cyberia 2: Resurrection

Cyberia 2: Resurrection was released in 1995, continuing the plot of its predecessor. Xatrix Entertainment tried to polish the flaws of the original game, but as I see it, it just made it all worse.

Graphics became slightly better, and an attempt was made to fuel the story with more characters, broader dialogues, and more frequent and longer cut-scenes. Unfortunately, it made a great disservice to the game, because the quality of cinematics here is abhorrent. The cheesy voice acting combined with poor writing riddled with clichés give Cyberia 2 extremely cheap feel. Poorly directed cut-scenes are too frequent and often unnecessary: it’s infuriating when the flow of the game cuts off for the sake of some random fart joke.

A true masterpiece of that time, they did a great job: throwing out unfun parts of Cyberia and improving what was really fun: FMV-shooting. I think FMV-graphics got much better.

There’s now no separate difficulties for action and puzzle parts and we can’t use scanners manually.
