Mini Ninjas

Mini Ninjas

Mini ninjas,

one of my personal favorite games from my childhood

Opening the box to the wii and my grandmother having purchased all my siblings a game was an amazing christmas morning and i wanted to play immediatly being the only actual “gamer” out of all my siblings…

this wasnt the case though as wii sports was already being booted up whilst we all looked like a bunch of maniacs all wanting to play ours games, but first i had to wait as i was the youngest and everyone was getting 1 hour to try out their game in order of age so that everybody could play (and prefferably co-op games only my parents said) 5 hours later as im the youngest it was finally my turn and with multiple breaks like dinner and family stopping by it was already pretty late, not only late but my bedtime and not a co op game, so there i go not having played the game i was looking forward to all day… well i did play the game that day actually which follows up a way to long cycle of me secretly playing games at night troughout my entire childhood…

Steam is home to a lot of crap, and I do mean a lot.. But it also is home to a number of hidden gems that no one really talks about much.

Mini Ninjas is one of those gems. A bit of an imperfect one, sure, but a gem nontheless. And like many hidden gems, it doesn’t get a whole lot of attention.

The game is kinda an action adventure game, with small elements of RPG and stealth. You play the role of a ninja named Hiro, who is tasked with finding all his lost friends and saving the world while he is at it. A lot of pressure, I know, but then you are a ninja with the power to control the elements, so it shouldn’t be too hard (Which kinda is a problem for the game, I’ll explain later)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Out of the Shadows

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Out of the Shadows

Ok, a warning beforehand: I am biased toward anything Turtles. It doesn’t matter if it’s a turd with a red bandana, I am bound to like it. With that out of the way, let’s get this review trucking.

Out of the Shadows is a freeflow combat beat ‘em up loosly adapted from the 2012 Nickelodeon reboot of the series. If you haven’t seen that yet, give it a shot. It captures much of the old magic in a more modern and sensible jacket than the 80s cartoon. The game however, wears a different coat. The Turtles all have a more realistic look; they look like genuine mutants. This is probably the most striking feature of the game, because it departs from the appearances we’s come be familliar with.

The Good:

Having all four brothers on-screen regardless of player number is major, providing much needed atmosphere that, for many TMNT games, was lacking if you were like me and didn’t have enough friends interested in going to the arcade.

The dialogue is great, and goes even further to bring the atmosphere together.

The animations for the turtles are super, and so are their individual fighting styles. I certainly believe RedFly when they say they are TMNT fans, as it’s evident in the care they took to make each turtle feel like an individual and contributing member of the group.

Draw Slasher

Draw Slasher

You know a game’s gonna be hard when you’re having a helluva time just making it through the Tutorial. Fortunately, Draw Slasher is one game whose novel mechanics you gradually get the hang of, and for a short while thereafter you might even fool yourself into believing you’re pretty good at it. Don’t get too cocky, though. Get your guard down for more than a second, and this game knows how to hand your arse back to you, in several more pieces than it started.

Even the so-called “Easy” mode will give you a run for your money, especially if your hand-eye coordination and reflexes are as dodgy as those of the person writing these words. But rest assured: persistence can pay off, and it’s in the personal rewards department (y’know, pride an’ all that stuff) that Draw Slasher truly pays off. Almost every new enemy requires its own strategies to take ‘em down, e.g. attack ‘em only from behind, look for the chink in their armour, etc. Learning each of these strategies, then becoming increasingly competent at executing them, is enough to convince even the crappiest of gamers that they can make it one checkpoint further (and maybe, just maybe, get past that pesky boss once and for all).

Sub-Par Mobile Game, Horrible PC Game.

While playing this game and achievement hunting it, I made up some key points to why this game isn’t really worth a purchase. The main point of mine is that the key mechanic, which is drawing with your mouse to make your character attack and jump, isn’t a good idea to be distributed to a computer-only market. Not only are the hitboxes for the draw mechanic incredibly off and don’t feel right, but the general concept doesn’t appeal to mouse-keyboard gaming, as I found it very hard to complete the story mode and challenge modes alike with this mechanic. Another point for this game being not as great would be the boss fights; I would completely understand if this was a budget issue, but the boss fights (and fights in general with the average enemies) aren’t engaging at all. No second phases, no gimmicks, nothing—the game’s story mode has nothing to offer in thrill and difficulty other than training you how to accurately draw lines with your mouse.

YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z

YAIBA: NINJA GAIDEN Z

The only Ninja Gaiden experience currently available on PC! I say enjoy it!

Note: Only recommended if you have a controller!

Pros:

  • Amazing graphics and animation as one expects for a Ninja Gaiden game.

  • Cool combat and funny/interesting enemies

  • Funny anti hero character

Cons:

  • The game is too short for a Ninja Gaiden game

  • Enemies are funny but can get old, and no Ninja type enemies. All are zombies!

  • Can be frustrating (but then what Ninja Gaiden game isn’t?)

So in my view Ninja Gaiden 1 as a game is the Deus Ex equivalent of action games

I want to clear something up before I move on here. This game is NOT a traditional Ninja Gaiden game, if you couldn’t already tell. I feel as though some people were looking for a Ninja Gaiden 4, a true sequel to Gaiden 2 (because 3 was definitely a different, less satisfying beast). So Yaiba. This game is the extreme opposite of a true Ninja Gaiden game in many ways. However, it is also like those games in many ways as well. Let me explain.

I’ve played Ninja Gaiden 1-3, beginning from the original xbox. I was never great at them, constantly getting punished just like every other regular joe, but I beat all three. I’ve read from others that this isn’t a true Ninja Gaiden, that it’s easier, that it’s more or less terrible. Sure, if you were amazing at the first two, maybe this one wasn’t that next level of challenge you were looking for.

[NINJA GAIDEN: Master Collection] NINJA GAIDEN Σ2

As a Ninja Gaiden junkie, I personally do not think the collection is worth it, the artbook was even disappointing. While my hours on steam don’t reflect how much time I’ve put into the series, I have played the original 04 Ninja Gaiden, Black, Sigma 1, 08 Ninja Gaiden 2, Sigma 2, 2012 Ninja Gaiden 3 and Razor’s Edge, completing the games multiple times on all difficulties and most of mission mode for each game, besides Ninja Gaiden 2. I have more hours on 1 and 2 than I can remember and I can say that this collection, while it is here to gauge the interest of the fanbase for future projects, I wouldn’t be surprised if it fails due to how lazy these ports are.

I’ve beat all the Ninja Gaiden games on the hardest difficulty and this game is a joke… and not only because of the reduced enemies and less gore. Here is a list on a few things that they did change in Sigma 2 in compare to the Original Ninja Gaiden 2

• Game got censored (99% of spilled blood was changed into purple mist)

• Completely censored Cutscenes

• Reduced enemy count

• Increased enemy damage

• Increased enemy health

• Increased enemy delimb resistance

• Reduced enemy aggression

• Reduced enemy IS throwing

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM Revolution

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM Revolution

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution is not as revolutionary as the title might suggest, but I think it’s the step in the right direction.

The disappointing thing is lack of canon story mode in the game. Instead, we have Ninja World Tournament, Mecha-Naruto Story and the Ninja Escapades. The Ninja World Tournament is just mode, in which you thrive for championship in a tournament consistin of 4-characters brawl. Initial ranks of the tournament are easy, but difficulty rises gradually. Also, you can roam the island (the bigger progress you made in the tournament, the more areas you can visit), doing challenges, missions and events. Even thought it has absolutely nothing to do with canon storyline, the mode is quite fun to play, some friendship events are hilarius.

This is one of those games I’m highly indifferent about. Looking back, I wouldn’t call this game a bad game at all, in fact I quite enjoyed it. The “story” is comprised of four short stories with some (easy) fights peppered in that expand the lore in the naruto world through the story of the Akatsuki, Itachi and Shisui, a unique story about the new character “Mecha Naruto”, along with a 10 minute movie about team Minato which I quite enjoyed. Overall, this will take maybe 2-3 hours to complete. Which is quite a bit less than I’d expect for a game with such a steep price tag. The replay value is unfortunately nonexistant unless you are looking for the two achievements given for achieving S ranking on the Itachi and Akatsuki mini story lines. However, if you didn’t already get these achievements on your first playthrough as these fights are quite easy, you will without a doubt get it on your second. There is also the “Ninja world tournament mode” which I enjoyed quite a bit. In this mode, you can select a character of your choosing (with the exception of all the young characters, which kinda sucks) and duke it out in a four-player brawl against NPCs. Unfortunately, there is no online mode for this. This is really awful since like the rest of the NPCs, they are quite easy to defeat, and offer no real challenge. I will admit by the S+ tournament I was sweating a bit at the intensity, but the difficulty is entirely due to major NPC buffs in the form of a constant “true awakening form” and not a more advanced AI. That being said, I still won it on my first go-around which really ruins the fun of the game. This will most likely take about 5-6 hours to complete (basing off my own time). And overall, you’ll get about 7-9 hours of gameplay out of the story if you play to completion. Such a small playtime leaves something of a bitter taste in my mouth considering the price tag of this game. However, if you’re seeing my play time, you’ll notice I have 100+ hours in this game as of writing this review. This is due to this games’ bread and butter, the online mode. However, unfortunately enough for the online mode, the online community has depleted in the two months since this game has come out. This has made finding someone to fight almost a chore and you really have to just open the game and cross your fingers that you’ll find someone. Speaking from personal experience, now that the game is about 2 months after launch, it is a very common occurence that you will find noone to battle.Near the games' launch, the online was solid and all you had to worry about was a tiny bit of lag since so many people were on the servers. However, even now that not so many people are using the servers, the lag is still existant if not worse. This is a huge no-no in my opinion for a 1v1 fighter to have any form of lag. Especially to the point of making the game near unplayable at points. This raises a secondary issue in the fact that even if you manage to find someone to play against, that person might have a laggy connection and make your game either near impossible to play, or make your game crash entirely. In total, this game was very fun. But now that the main focus of this game, the online, has fallen into an abyss, I would advise against purchasing this game. Still, for all the fun I had, I think this game is great. 8/10, buy it if you have a time machine or you love wasting money for a couple hours of fun.

Ninjin: Clash of Carrots

This game is cool, but has its drawbacks.

Things I like about this game in no particular order:

  1. General Jam (He’s so cute!)

  2. Run #5 soundtrack is awesome;

  3. Soundtrack in general is awesome and very fitting;

  4. Moe Junior is Moest Adorable, I legit listen to his OST unironically;

  5. Corgi Junior stole my heart the first time I saw him;

  6. I like the references in the inventory. Still wish I knew where is “Gothic Sword” item from.

In general, this game is 1) made in a very loveable artsyle 2) has awesome soundtrack 3) has tons of humour, amiable, vibrant characters and quite fun storytelling in it, it’s obvious that the developers enjoyed themselves when working on this project.

Just a disclaimer before this review, I did receive this game for free on Steam, but I preordered it on another platform immediately after seeing the trailer, which happened weeks before receiving that free copy. That’s just how hyped I was for this game!

Ninjin is an amazing experience, not to mention an even better co-op experience! I played with a friend online for the entire game, and gearing up and strategizing for each mission together and checking out new items in the shop is very fun to do. The online was incredibly smooth too; I did a delay test, and the delay is the exact same as voice chat so… it’s as good as it gets.
