A Brilliant Game About The Beauty Of Music, Cooperation, And Friendship

(LIGHT SPOILERS)

Well I certainly didn’t expect this game to evoke that much emotion from me! I wasn’t even aware I owned this title, and will try and figure out exactly how it managed to fall into my lap. In this game, you play as The Bard, a lovable, positive, and sometimes naive little guy, who happens to figure out that the world is in danger and that it needs a hero. The game tricks any unaware players into thinking it is a generic adventure game following the typical “hero’s quest” such as in games like The Legend Of Zelda , but it ends up being so much more than that. Music is central to this game’s mechanics, and all interactions essentially involve some form of music, but it all involves a flick of the right stick in one of eight different directions. Throw in some puzzles, light platforming, and even some battles here and there, and you have a unique game full of charm, dedication, and something that many games lack nowadays - soul. There is so much that can be said about this game that is positive, that I figured we get the few “negatives” out of the way (more like neutral points if we’re being honest here).

The first review I’m ever writing on Steam. Mild spoiler warnings but nothing too telling.

This game was a phenomenon - I highly recommend it to both my friends who may see this review and the general consensus.

The game follows a (briefly) un-named Bard, who loves to sing. Turns out that whilst a lot of people are against this lifestyle of singing your way to victory, it pulls him a long way through a very colourful and deep journey to save the world - because he wants to, not because he was chosen to.

Beat The Game

Beat The Game

Beat The Game:

Important News Flash for all hoverbike owners . . . in the last few weeks, the authority recorded an alarming number of accidents in the desert involving hoverbike riders and fridges! It has become a trend for people to drop their old fridges in the desert, and an even bigger trend for riders to smash their bikes into them at night due to poor visibility. And you, my friend Mistik, you missed the news flash and indeed rode into one tonight!

Beat The Game is an adventure / puzzle game where you play Mistik, a strange character who is dressed like a prison inmate and carries a holographic music mixer wherever he goes.

--- As far as I can tell **Beat the game** is not a finished product or at the very least, not a smooth experience. So the unique mechanic in the game is finding sounds for 8 step sequencer (basically you can play the game to your own soundtrack created from those sounds) Was the mechanic utilized intuitively? Not really. It is just kind of there as a sandbox tool and it did not create any worthwhile gameplay elements. Although I really enjoyed the aesthetic there are noticeable issues with camera lag and the flickering world. For $7 I expected a more refined experience considering 60-90 minute length. *– [Real player with 1.9 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197995669628)* --- ![Boom Fighters](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/814800/header.jpg "") ## Boom Fighters Jump, defeat enemies, avoid obstacles, solve puzzles and more by playing to the rhythm of music as awesome vinyl toys that will save the world from boredom. It will also have a level editor for you to create your own worlds and share them with other players around the world! ![](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/814800/extras/DescriptionConcept.jpg?t=1583511382) Boom Fighters is a music 3D platformer title where music, video games and designer-toy-style figures meet to create a fascinating universe full of craziness and fun. This game is in early stage of development, but we want to share all the development process with everyone. The level editor will allow players to create their own levels either with the characters, songs and environments that are included with the game. The world of Boom Fighters is being numbed by the boredom caused by an evil entity, who has kidnapped all the elements that made the world fun and locked them in a secret place. The boom fighters have to travel and fight this entity and its henchmen to find the secret place and give the fun back to the world. This is the scope planned for the complete game on final release (Early Access will start in 2020): ★ 10 Worlds + 10 Songs ★ 10 Playable Characters ★ MIDI instruments can be used as input ★ Platformer + Puzzle + Fighting mechanics ★ Level editor for the players to create their own levels IMPORTANT: The current version only has two worlds and four playable characters. Our inspiration for this game comes from different worlds. On the one hand, we have always loved vinyl (designer toys) figures, from brands like Kid Robot, Tokyo Plastic, Tokidoki an the likes. On the other hand, music has been one of the strongest forces to drive our studio's creativity. Our musical inspiration comes from The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Gorillaz, among many others. And finally, since the beginning of our operation we have been inspired on how our players have loved the rhythmic mechanics that we've created so far and we can not wait to continue creating this kind of games d(-.-)b ---

--- --- ![GNRBLEX](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1060560/header.jpg "") ## GNRBLEX BottomLine at the Top: A remake of a MAGS (Monthly Adventure Game Studio) 2016 submission, this is a short but sweet retro style P&C game with a sci-fi story and a few difficult puzzles. Pros –----------------------------------- -Has kind of an SCP feel to it. -Started right up. No setup headaches. -Good quality voice acting. -Atmospheric music. -Free! Meh. ------------------------------------- -Using the music calming button to listen to music while the main game music is playing in the background is weird. *– [Real player with 2.9 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198106512564)* GNRBLEX is a game where you play a scientist who must get two creatures to mate so you can prevent them from going extinct. This game is very reminiscent of the old point and click games that I played way too many of as a kid but was a lot of fun to play. Some of the puzzle solutions are a bit convoluted but none of them felt unfair. It really requires players to keep their eyes open for anything and read everything very carefully. This game was a lot of fun to play and I highly recommend to people who grew up on point and click browser games like I did. *– [Real player with 2.9 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198796209853)* --- ![Syn](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1198770/header.jpg "") ## Syn **When promises are broken. When the walls turn to dust. When rules are unspoken. When the holy structures rust. The serpent shall awaken. And open up its eyes. Our bonds will be forsaken. And light exposed as lies. An answer must be given. But the knowledge is corrupt. Sin can't be forgiven. Until order is disrupt. The way must be revealed. Truth must be undone. Ancient wounds are healed. When two are joined as one** An accident interrupts Roark's religious initiation and plunges him into adventure. Run, jump, solve music-based puzzles, and save Roark's tribe from destruction. No prior music knowledge required, just ears and eyes. Adventure and mystery await. * **An adaptive soundtrack which interacts with the world** What you do in the world changes the song. Changes in the song affect the world. The soundtrack plays a note causing a platform appear. You jump on the note to cross a cliff before it disappears. You use a magic spell to shift the pitch of the song up. The note-platform moves up as well. You can now reach a higher place. You change the song's tempo. The flow of time changes. You change the key of a song. The world's gravity changes. You get the idea. No prior music knowledge required, just ears and eyes. * **A single player game with a rich story.** You play as Roark. A young man being initiated into his nomadic tribe. Travel with the tribal elders as they teach you the ways of the world. Learn the mythology of Roark's people all the way back to the creation of the world. Solve the mystery of Ancient Zebulon, a mighty empire which vanished at the height of its power. All that remains of Zebulon today are ruins and sand. What became of that god-like race? I liked the artwork. The open worlod part itself is nice to roam around and collect things. But beyond that it has insane flaws. Every now and then it puts you in these big cube rooms that are bland and makes you collect items. Water rises. Touch the water you have to restart. Open world or cube world you have an auto slide so your toon won't even stay still. So you have to repearivly jump in spot as water rises and falls or die and start over. This is for anywhere in the game. And making me sit in rooms to collect things over and over vs enjoying the open world, where you still slide and die but at least it pretty to look at, makes the game not desrable to play. *– [Real player with 2.1 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198052292988)* --- ![Mind Labyrinth VR Dreams](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/856080/header.jpg "") ## Mind Labyrinth VR Dreams This game is kinda unique. It lets you relax in different kind of environments with really great atmospheres and music. You can actually change music in every moment and there's quite a lot to see. The interaction is good even if it's not obvius. You need to look around a bit to understand what you can do and sometimes it's really a nice surprise to find some cool stuff like the fireworks. I'm also starting to find the hidden spheres to see what I'll be able to unlock. I think everyone should give it a shot and experience something different from all the other VR games right now. *– [Real player with 31.6 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198099556799)* Mind Labyrinth VR Dreams is a game that try to bring something new to the world of VR. There are other "Emotional or Relax" VR game out there but this one is able to make things more interesting and looks more inspired on the environment and music. It's not the same beach and island or the same jungle, instead it gives you environments that are truly able to touch your feelings and make it feel you immersed in dreamlike scenes that you'll hardly find everywhere else. *– [Real player with 10.5 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198929526031)* --- ![One Hand Clapping](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/893720/header.jpg "") ## One Hand Clapping This game is super neat, especially if you already have a vocal background. It could get frustrating otherwise, as you will be asked to match pitch and harmonize. There's also some rhythm elements, so having a sense for that will also help. The sound design is lush and gives many clues. It takes the sounds that you're producing and incorporates them into the game as you go, resulting in even richer soundscapes. The puzzles are occasionally mildly bewildering, but then they click and become super intuitive. The art style is super cute. *– [Real player with 10.1 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198361025490)* I love this game! I finished my first playthrough the same day it finished downloading, and I'm definitely going to play through it again. I keep hearing that the devs are going to add more content, which is super exciting. The voice controls are wonderfully intuitive - I grew up playing some of the first video games that used singing as a mechanic (think karaoke games) and wow - things have changed in a good way. Some things to note: you're going to want a decent mic for this. It doesn't need to break the bank, but you should probably have a pop filter on it for best results. I didn't play with one and it definitely picked up background noise on occasion. I'm not sure how to adjust the sensitivity of my mic personally, but you're gonna wanna play around with things until you find something that works with your setup. *– [Real player with 6.9 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198063492257)* --- ![Yi and the Thousand Moons](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/701730/header.jpg "") ## Yi and the Thousand Moons Bought this game during the sales for around one € (euro); which should be the price for this game considering the duration of the gameplay… BUT, when not considering the full price of € 2.39 and just looking at the game itself; then this game brought me totally back where "Dear Esther" took me all those years ago... the creation of a totally new genre. Where the game "Dear Esther" invented the storytelling / walking simulator, this game brings us the interactive musical. Even your footsteps create music (it took me some time to discover that as it's done so gently that you almost don't notice it). *– [Real player with 1.4 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197967132117)* Yi and the Thousand Moons is obviously made with so much passion that I get drawn into it immediately. It has to be said from the beginning of this review: this is a game centered around music, and you should make sure you like the music and singer in the trailer before you buy. The rest of the review is for you who like the music but still aren't sure if you want the game. The gameplay is basic, a walking simulator with a few instances of simple interaction. The graphics is a mostly empty world populated with a few block people, block houses and a block shamisen. Yet your brain is a pro at filling out those gaps, and the game looks beautiful within the constraints it operates in. And you know what else fills out the world? Music. We're here for the interactive musical ride. The interaction is that you do different simple things to prod the music along, there are no choices or anything fancy like that going on. Yet to me it feels satisfying to release an arrow and hear the characters start to sing when my arrow hits its (non living) mark. The music fills the entire world and sometimes sends shivers down my spine. One song in particular gives me goose bumps every time. The game is short, and I keep coming back to it for replays to listen to the songs again. *– [Real player with 1.1 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198043343260)* ---
