Unearthing Mars VR

Unearthing Mars VR

I picked it up in Summersale and am at Level 4 now.

I love it so far.

I always assumed that with VR the entertainment industry would develop new formats that are more experience orientated in addition to the very fast and stressful game-play oriented formats that are the mayority right now.

“Unearthing Mars” is very much in that direction, it gives you time to take in the environment and slowly develops the story.

The graphics of the “War of the worlds” waveshooter first Level were truly breathtaking and among the best VR experiences I have had so far.

Unearthing Mars is an interactive adventure in 10 acts arrived on PC after his PSVR release. I realize why it received some mixed reviews, isn’t flawless and it’s in some way unexpected but I liked it, 14.99 is a fair price for the amount of quality and longevity offered.

I used the interactive adventure definition because you can find different things:

  1. story driven situations, when things happens and you need time to time to do a single action to progress (most commons);

  2. driving and exploring situation, when you drive your rover like an RC car (my favourites);

Caves Of Mars

Caves Of Mars

The Caves Of Mars is the new 2D action space shooter game set in the mysterious caves of the planet Mars.

Tharsis is a mountainous region on Mars where hundreds of caves have been discovered. These caves contain precious gems which are heavily guarded by enemies and alien life forms.

Navigate your spacecraft through these caves, destroy enemies and alien lifeforms and collect as many gems as possible. Collecting gems will increase your health and gain points. You will gain extra bonus points the more gems you collect and enemies you destroy.

There are 100 cave levels to complete, each one procedurally generated randomly so no two levels are ever the same. As you progress through the levels the caves will become larger, more complex and you will encounter more challenging enemies, aliens and obstacles.

Enemies

You will encounter many different enemies as you progress though the caves. Some guard their position and don’t move, whilst others form waves of enemy spacecraft which will follow you. The more powerful enemies will take serval hits to destroy.

Enemy Bosses

Watch out for enemy boss spacecraft. Some of the Key Cards are in the possession of enemy bosses so you will need your weapons to destroy these and collect the Key Card.

Aliens

Watch out for Alien lifeforms. Some of these can move, jump or fly and throw lightning bolts.

Fuel

Collect Fuel to Boost Your Health.

Power Ups

Collect vessels containing Weapons and Shield Power-ups. Collected power-ups are displayed in the right-hand panel. Activate / deactivate these by clicking them or selecting keys 1-8. Each power-up with change the appearance of your player spacecraft.

Key Cards and Laser Doors

Find and collect ‘Key Cards’ to unlock ‘Laser Doors’ to gain access to each section of these caves.

Map

To help there is a map of each cave system indicating the location of each Key Card and the laser doors they unlock. Open this by clicking on the map button. The caves get larger and more complex as you progress so you will need this map.

Laser Beams

Beware of the laser beams which you will need to negotiate your way through as they switch on and off. Each laser beam will turn off and on as you approach it. To return you need to navigate the sequence of laser beams before returning.

Mars Colony:Challenger

Mars Colony:Challenger

I really, really, REALLY want to like this game. I just cannot.

It’s not the slow pace. That’s fine. I like games that take a while to pick up steam. It’s not the graphics. Yes, they’re dated, but so be it, there’s games from 10 years ago that I like to pick up and play.

It’s the lack of a GAME. There is none. You are supposed to build a Mars base. So far, so good. Interesting, one would assume. But what it comes down to is “take this bunch of containers one by one and carry them inside”, that means pick one up, walk (walk. What did you expect, running?) over to the airlock, find a place to put it down, walk back out to the hangard, pick another container up … and repeat that 20 times). Then you have to put the right container in the right slot at the machines. They are labeled, don’t worry, it’s not like you have to think or anything. Then watch a progress bar move like a snail. From time to time it may “fail” and you get to click a button, but in general you sit there and watch a progress bar.

I recommend it but only if you can get it at a low enough price as there are still a few annoying bugs. It’s a borderline recommendation though as the crafting mechanics and rover repairs become tedious quite quickly .

Also it will probably only appeal to a certain type of person so you should play the demo first.

The good:

It’s a slow paced survival game that does a reasonable job of capturing some of what it would be like to live and try and survive on Mars. A very unique survival experience that doesn’t rely on zombies/dinos or some other form of being horribly murdered to create the survival expereience.

Tides of the Elder Gods

Review

Once again Funcom expands its online MMO’s lore - the formerly known The Secret World but re-purposed as Secret World Legends in 2017 - with a new interactive narrative experience in Moons of Madness which acts in exactly the same way as Funcom’s previous effort, The Park. What that means is you are getting a heavily story-based experience with some light puzzle solving as opposed to one that includes combat and an overdose of action.

TLDR: I really wanted to love this as a huge fan of horror, lovecraft and narrative driven games but its just not “quite” there. It’s by no means bad, but it just didn’t have the strong story needed in a game…with no gameplay.

Pros - Pretty game to look at in places, clearly a lot of effort went into set dressing / area design, initially builds a good atmosphere.

Cons - Story is very shallow and predictable, characters are just bad, puzzles are very simple, lots of choppy framerates and some very out of place gameplay that felt shoehorned in.

Occupy Mars: Prologue

Occupy Mars: Prologue

I think this game has a lot of potential. I love the realism. Also, the controls are very intuitive. They are different from some other games I play but Occupy Mars does it how it should be…left click basically does everything. What a novel concept! It’s the game I’ve been looking for! I look forward to the early access.

Sometimes the realism is too much, such as soldering every pin on a chip, but generally the realism in this game is what gives it an edge over other survival games. Maybe you should put the board in a chip repair machine and it takes a certain amount of time to repair. In the mean time, you have to live without the device that board belongs to… Just a thought.

Planetary Settlers

Its a decent, fun exploration game with some puzzles and parkour. The game has quizzes on each planet which let you test your knowledge about the solar system. I’m surprised that this game isn’t very popular since its quite cheap and also pretty fun. It would also be a good game for younger kids to play too. Decent game, recommend you buy it.

Utopia Colony

Utopia Colony

First of all it’s a game you play once and never again. Simply because once you complete your mission you win and game ends. It can be done in a w/end.

Game is interesting, it has a huge map you can walk or drive but going from one place to another takes time!

Graphics are not great but decent, there are several bases you can explore and complete some task for credits.

Your main source of credits are minerals can find around, collect and sell for credits. You upgrade your suit with more oxygen capacity, and as you progress you buy rovers, you expand your base and build several buildings like greenhouse which provides food.

Real player with 15.4 hrs in game

Loving this game so far. Love the desolate atmospheric surroundings, and very impressed with my base as it grows. Currently hitting a bit of a brick wall as I need credits to complete the research tasks, but can’t find enough resources to collect, and haven’t figured out how to get my water extractor to work, so having to buy lots of water, cancelling out the credits I earn for any ore do I find on my trips out. I’ve built my greenhouses, and looking forward to when things start go grow. I’ve lost 8 hours straight on my first play, so I really need to go and make my lunch now. Thanks, great game.
