Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance
I can’t belive this game is in Steam! My first hack and slash game of my childhood
Good story, gore combat, finishers, weapon upgrades, variety of enemies, etc
And not only that, they added trading cards and achievements so it’s more enjoyable
The negative thing is that mouse players are fu*ked. There is no support for mouse. It seems like the company who decided to re-launch this old title (Acclaim entertainment was the original developer) is forcing you to buy a controller lol. I remember playing this game back in 2003 with mouse without problems

I hate the controls, I can barely change them. I´m a WASD player, I cannot play well with the arrows.
UPDATE: I managed to change the arrows to WASD, but no mouse for the attacks. I assigned other keys for the attacks. It´s playable now, anyway.
I only wish the movement vectors were attached to my view, not the gladiator´s (much like in drones, where you can choose which vector the drone will obey). For example, if the character is facing left, and I want him to keep going left, I have to press forward, not left. It´s annoying. Sometimes, in the middle of a huge brawl, it´s very hard to make the gladiator go the direction I want.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition
First off, I’m a huge fan of the Castlevania series. So that foundation may color my opinion of this game and it’s ensuing interquel and sequel (which I’m currently in the midst of). Something about medieval through Enlightment era Europe with a heavy gothic/baroque aesthetic, corrupted through dark forces that threaten the world? Awesome. Tons of monsters pulling on a multitude of inspiration from the myth cycles of antiquity through the modern Universal monsters? Yes, please.
Konami struck gold initially by creating these dark adventures that took a quite serious tone for the early Nintendo systems, offering a beefy challenge of vintage Nintendo difficulty through several increasingly impressive platformer games. They then evolved into the famed Metroidvanias with the release of Symphony of the Night on the Playstation - trading a bit of the reflex-intensive difficulty for massive sprawling environments that took forever to explore and fully unlock - and followed this formula with several excellent installments on Nintendo’s handhelds where they found their most sustainable home and success through the late 2000’s. Then Konami, sensing the increasingly stagnant nature of the series as it became mired in repeated iterations of SotN’s sprawling platformer/RPG hybrid, started searching for a way to revitalize the series again, just as SotN ignited a sort of Golden Age for the series.

(Important note: This game, for whatever reason, doesn’t like being set to fullscreen + max res on a display other than that which Windows / your video card identifies as Display 1, regardless if it’s your primary display or not. Weird bug but easy to fix.)
Lords of Shadow is a flawed but polished masterpiece and a triumph of artistic direction. It’s shortcomings are forgivable. That said, since you can expect to sink upwards of 40hrs into this, I’ll go into some more detail.
Presentation wise, this game is stunning. Masterful visuals paired with smooth and optimized 4K performance make for an eye-popping experience. The art team went all out on this and it shows. I’ve never taken so many screenshots of a game before. Two major detractors though: 1. Some of the cutscenes were pre-rendered for console are unimproved by modern hardware (they still look passable but they’re jaggy af); 2. Godrays are a weak point. The score is powerful but not iconic; you’ll love it in the moment but try to recall the music later and you’ll likely struggle, for the most part. This isn’t objectively a bad thing, as it simply means it’s enhancing the experience without overpowering it but I was disappointed by the lack of iconic singles and the abscence of a Bloody Tears revamp.

Darksiders™
“In times of war, the law falls silent.”
~Marcus Tullius Cicero
The seventh generation of video game consoles. In my humble opinion, it was the last generation, in which console war was still a thing. I mean, seriously. Look at the world we live in now. We have Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy on Xbox, Crash Bandicoot and Forza on PC and so on. Sure, technically, the console war is still on and some titles are still available only on certain platforms, but all in all, seventh generation was the last one when it was still interesting. The last one when it was actually worth having more than one system on you. And this game? It’s taking advantage of that.

I’d started playing this game on several occasions… the first time the game chewed me up and spit me out before the end of the first dungeon… the second time I reached the first Boss, took a hammering a few times and then took a long break… but the story and the gameplay really intruiged me, so I came back a third time and was able to stay the course this time. Despite my earlier misgivings, I had an absolute blast and thoroughly enjoyed playing Darksiders… a few people have said it is an underappreciated game, and I can understand that.

Darksiders Genesis
TL;DR
! Darksiders Genesis is a prequel spin-off that introduces new features while re-introducing countless aspects of the other games. If you’ve been a fan of the franchise at any point, you should definitely not skip this entry. If you’re a newcomer, this may be a good entry point.
If you expect Diablo in a Darksiders costume, you’re tragically mistaken.

I’ve completely fallen in love with this game. For a low-budget spin-off it is absolutely fantastic. I had never really even paid much attention to Darksiders but discovered this game during a Steam sale. It got my attention because I really dig the stylized look and feel of it.
First of all, I want to heavily emphasize this: Play the game with a friend. The game functions as a single player experience but it is very much designed to be a co-op game. I started playing on my own, enjoyed it, then recruited and started again with a friend and the experience got way better. Not that the game is bad on your own, its just more fun played as intended.

Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition
Darksiders and its sequel remain some of my favorite games from the previous generation. The first game was clearly and deliberately derivative of some of the best titles in history, Zelda and God of War chief among them. The dungeon crawling and puzzles were top notch, as was the sense of progression and the combat, while simple, was visceral and satisfying in a way that Zelda’s never was. As important, however, was the story which was filled with engaging characters and a lore that was much more interesting than something based on Biblical mythology (not an uncommon road to tread) had any right to be. War, Samael, Vulgrim, Ulthane and Uriel were all extremely memorable characters.

Darksiders 2 is an improvement over the first game and holds its own even in 2018.
** If you prefer a video review, check the bottom of this post **
The sequel’s story actually runs parallel to Darksiders 1. You are introduced to Horseman Death as he tries to free his brother War by resurrecting the kingdom of Man. To do this, the horseman ventures to different lands and realities while taking on a host of mobs and platforming activities.
PLOT
Since it runs parallel to the first game, you still have the same scenario. You have the war between Heaven and Hell, the Nephilim born of the union between Angels and Demons and the Kingdom of Man. The final war was triggered inadvertently and War was framed for it. In this game, Death looks for a way to save his brother.

TL;DR
! Darksiders is a compelling action adventure with God of War (I - III) style combat, and Legend of Zelda style progression, all with puzzles, gadgets and a catchy “Mystery Sound”.
! It combines infamous Joe “MAD” Madureira’s unique and over-the-top art-style (Battle Chasers: Nightwar) with an epic story about the Apocalypse being kicked off too early and one of the four Horsemen being blamed for it. You take control of said rider, War, as he tries to uncover who is behind this conspiracy and cuts down Angels and Demons alike to get there. With its colorful yet brutal art-style, its epic soundtrack and its superb voice-acting (including Liam O’Brien and Mark Hamill) this game is an instant recommendation. The Warmastered Edition is the same with more graphical options and the Harvester integrated instead of obtained via code.
