Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments

I have played a couple of Sherlock Holmes games before so I decided to get the Sherlock Holmes bundle during a Steam sale.

I enjoyed the game very much but there is some frustration with the game as well.

First off as expected you are Sherlock Holmes you go around solving crimes with your trusted companion Dr Watson, you take cases that are offered from Inspector Lestrade of Scotland yard.

I like the set up of this game you have your home/base on Baker Street as expected even with Toby the dog and Mrs Hudson, your own room where you can change your looks or get a disguise.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series developed by Frogwares has been going on for more than a decade now. It’s had its ups and downs, but the general tendency was upwards. After Frogwares reached their peak in the previous game, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, they decided it was time for a general refurbishment of the series. So they picked the last two games and put them into a mixer, along with The Walking Dead (by Telltale), The Cave and L.A. Noire. Can the result live up to this legacy? If you bear with me for a moment, then I will tell you.

Lamplight City

Lamplight City

Steampunky Island

Systemising detective work in games is difficult to do well. That’s why my interest was naturally piqued when hearing of City’s absence of a failure state. I’ve enjoyed various other games experimenting with text entry and linking/contradicting evidence to allow the player to truly embody the role, so the ability to ‘fail’ was suggestive of a promising amount of player agency. Playing Lamplight City remains a joyous experience, but it isn’t so much in its systems that it entertains, but its presentation, stories and characters. As a modern take on the 90s point and click it truly thrives.

sniff sniff I smell a murder.

I could always go for a great mystery story. Whether it’s the core of the story or just one part of it, like trying to find out how one guy is cheating and in turn, how the main character will try to outsmart them. Then there’s a choice between how interactive the story is with you. Other than what kind of mystery you’ll be facing, there’s also different levels of interactivity. Some aims to let the audience tag along and give you a chance to try and solve it alongside the main character; while some actually keeps their audience in the dark till the end to focus on being fun (personally, I take a liking to both). With games, you can’t exactly be kept in the dark and you get the added bonus of being in the middle of it. In Lamplight City’s case, you take the role of a detective, ready to solve the various cases that is brought to your attention.

Blacksad: Under the Skin

Blacksad: Under the Skin

Blacksad: Under the Skin is a good game, but a rather unpolished one. It plays very similarly to the Telltale style and is reminiscent of The Wolf Among Us due to its grimy New York crime setting and visuals. You can expect a choice in dialogue options, free exploration of larger areas to find clues, making deductions by linking together your findings and examining characters (like in recent Sherlock games) and some quick-time events (QTEs) scattered here and there in the action cutscenes. As far as I know, the game is an interactive adaptation of a comic book series and features a brand new story not seen in the comics.

Blacksad: Under the Bugs

TLDR: Great story, great characters, nice music. Bad gameplay, bugs and other things that will turn a lot of people off.

Ok, this will be a tough case to crack. I will tell the problems so people interested in this game be wary, but in the end I recommend it. Basically… this game won’t be for everyone, not because of the story and themes nor because it’s a bunch of antrophomorphic characters in a noir setting…

But because the gameplay is quite bad.

🚪 Introduction

The way Murdered: Soul Suspect expounds the afterworld postulation is very aberrant. I don’t accept the idea of being stuck in limbo until I solve the mystery of my murder or know where my body was buried. What if I wasn’t a detective or was an innocent dumbass? Am I screwed then? Will I be forever roaming the streets as a freak? What about kids? All these unanswered questions flout the paramount aspect of the afterlife that is justice for everyone. I feel like the main concept of the game was built on the protagonist’s case, ignoring everyone around him.

They okayest okay game that ever okayed, and it took me 29 disappointing hours in two gos (played once and stopped halfway because of boredom). I’m kind of upset that they made it only okay, with the great ideas they were working with.

Jokes aside, it’s a lukewarm game made out of a great idea, but it misses the mark in basically every single aspect so much that it’s a perfect 6/10 game.

The basic issue with the game that they try to do everything with collectibles (There are 242 collectibles). To tell you creepypasta/camp fire stories, to solve investigations, to uncover ghost graffities because ghost kids gonna be ghost kids, and also to get information about your beloved past wife, the love of your life…wait what?

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

Two years ago I’ve played Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments the previous title in this series and i though very well of that game. In fact there were so many things right with it. For starters it was a good game, it had a good selection of 6 cases in a relatively new format (for a game), which was, many short stories instead of one long one (which in this case worked excellent) It had a real good depiction of sherlock and watson, the game focused heavily on story as much as gameplay (not ancient genre conventions) and because of that, it presented freely many kinds of gameplay styles , ranging from classic interrogation with a suspect to contextual actions. This was achieved doing different things across the game, from placing and object in a certain place, to smelling a tobacco pouch to identify its brand, to throwing an harpoon on a pig (long story) to know more about a killer. All this was just the starting point, then you had your detective sense, which enabled you to find hidden prints of missing objects, and then you had your clues screen in which you associated different facts, like it was part of your brain, and ideas about the case flowed along until you reach one of many deductions to find the resolution.

I got this as part of a Humble Monthly Bundle. I personally would not pay $50 for it.

(mostly) Praise

Graphics: Pretty stunning. I do like how when doing character analysis, things are (usually) detailed enough to notice the parts you have to click on without giving up and running your mouse over the whole character for the place it wants you to find.

Animations: Not perfect, but believable and good.

Interfaces: Usually work really well or are enjoyable to use. I love the deductions screen, filling it out it really satisfying. Working at the analysis table was also great, for the most part. You may be corrected for trying to open a bottle before using a tool with it, but it’s usually pretty intuitive.

Who this game may appeal to –

-New P&C gamers

-Agatha Christie fans or those who love a good story

-HOG gamers who like puzzles as the puzzles here are just a bit harder than most HOGs (note this isn’t a HOG like some past Christie games were).

-People who find Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes games too hard or need a good bit of help with them.

Those who are seasoned P&C gamers who are expecting the same length and complexities as the cheaper priced ($20) new Nancy Drew games may be disappointed which is why I am only recommending it if you can get it at half price. But then I always found Agatha Christie games to be easier than ND and SH games (although this is a completely different style as to the other AC adventure games). Trying to be thorough going for max points and working out achievements, first gameplay was 6-7hrs, with no hints.

There are many things this game did wonderfully, such as the fantastic voice acting, the art style, and how the interviews adapt depending on what you chose to say. I really appreciate the achievements as it could have been realy easy for the developers to put in achievements based on ego points the game awards, but instead have them based on the story or investigating people, places, and objects.

While the puzzles do seem easy, I found that the game does seem to weigh it based on which part of the game it is located in, such as in chapter one you have puzzles you can easily figure out (as a way to introduce looking around for clues) and the last puzzles you do (in chapter three) involve investigating outside of the puzzle.

REVIEW

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is a very pleasantly surprising puzzle game, with a high standard of quality and a humorous undertone. Any fans of the puzzler-adventure genre should easily find this game enjoyable. Once you start playing you will likely find yourself engrossed by the experience.

‘The Testament of Sherlock Holmes’ is based on an entirely fictional plot not borrowed from any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s works. The length of the game is a good 25 hours, and one gets to solve lots of puzzles and search every nook and corner for clues. Dr. Watson acts as a valuable accomplice for Holmes and often one will control Watson rather than Holmes.

One feature that I really liked about the game is the graphics. They are very good, although not as good as some of the Tomb Raider games. The game takes place in some very odd yet beautiful settings. Another feature that is praiseworthy is the variety and ingenuity of the puzzles that the developers have created. The ‘Deduction Menu’ can be extremely challenging because one must reach the correct conclusion for each of the clues to reach the correct final conclusion. The music is for the most part dark and spooky, but fits well into the game.

Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot: The First Cases

Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot: The First Cases

As a Poiort fan of nearly two decades I must say I’m extremely disappointed. If this is a game that has absolutely nothing to do with Poirot I would be fine with it; but since “Poirot” was what was advertised I must judge this game on that merit, and I must say it failed spectacularly.

First, the mystery itself was pretty bad; the blackmail plot was highly implausible and had set a certain admirable group back a thousand years (Why? What was the writer trying to accomplish?). The murder plot was…nothing at all like Christie’s, because it was not clever, or surprising, or even well-planned. Even a third-rate Golden Age writer would have been embarrassed to find their name attached to this drivel, let alone Christie’s.

I’ll cut to the chase - if you like either Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments or Blacksad, or both, then you will like this game too. If you are a fan of the Agatha Christie films that have been adapted for the big screen, such as Death on the Nile (the original one with Peter Ustinov of course), for example, or the TV series that starred David Suchet, you will love this game too.

The developers of the game have weaved a convoluted tale that is true to the spirit of the original Agatha Christie novels. It is so great that I am actually wondering if it is based on an unpublished work, or the idea for a novel that she never wrote.

Art of Murder - Cards of Destiny

Art of Murder - Cards of Destiny

I wasn’t really sure how to rate this, but overall, I don’t think I’d recommend it, for only one reason.

Gameplay was fine, graphics were good, puzzles were a little unbalanced (some too easy, some only solvable with save-scumming), which made the pacing a little awkward.

My one true problem with the story was the main character was a… something I’m not going to say where children might read it. I think they were going for strong-capable/lone-wolf or something… but it came off more of a total-mother-of-puppies. She was rude to her partner, even cussing him out at one point (he wasn’t exactly congenial, but at least he could keep his temper), condescending to… basically everyone, openly belligerent on multiple occasions in the game, and seemed to have no problem breaking laws herself, all in the name of “I’ve got work to do”.

Real player with 18.9 hrs in game

The most fun I had playing this game was trashing it with my sisters. It’s nearly impossible to get through with out a walkthrough, unless you take the time to try out every possible item combination. And even then she makes a comment each time you guess wrong and you have to be holding a specific object to use on the other one. The dialogue is bad, but I assume they just directly translated it, which may explain the poor voice acting, but doesn’t excuse it. The plot is pretty interesting leading up to the end, but the ending leaves many plot holes and the clunky dialogue doesn’t help to clear things up really. Luckily, I bought it and the rest of the games in the series on sale, but I wouldn’t pay full price for it. That said, I did really like the background music, I thought it helped set the tone and gave the game a sense of danger, particularly in the swamp. The background music also tends to drown out the dialogue, but that’s a plus in my opinion.
