1953 - KGB Unleashed

1953 - KGB Unleashed

I don’t recall ever buying this game but it seemed interesting at least from the pictures the store page had to offer. After playing it I can say that it was not what I was expecting at all.

First off, I strongly believe that the description should include that this title is a “Point and Click” game because it just states it is a “First Person Adventure” game which is very misleading. After a bit of digging I found out that one of the tags was “Point & Click” but it was hidden in the additional tags area which I had to manually click to check. For new buyers who seem mislead by the game’s description, just be aware that this title is in fact point and click and not what the description might make you perceive it to be. You will not move around with keys, but move from screen to screen with clicks.

I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of point-and-click games, but I do enjoy them on occasion. In KGB Unleashed it’s the usual journey of solving various puzzles and figuring out the meaning of various objects in each room. This game features more of the latter rather than the former. More often than not, I struggled to progress due to the obscurity of some elements, and despite the fact that I agree with the logic of each puzzle and the idea behind it, I believe it could have been far better designed. Many elements were misleading, or failed to emphasise the reason for its use. There are several examples I could give, one of which was a simple switch in a safe which gave no indication of what it did, yet it unlocked a door in another corridor that I did not realise until I had backtracked through most of the game to try and discover its purpose. In another part of the game, you have to descend a trap hole and there is a crate in the hole. Your cursor highlights to indicate there is something you need to do with the crate, but while I spent almost 10 minutes trying to open it, turns out it was actually where you had to put the tape recorder. Confusion like this could have been easily avoided by making the object anything other than a crate; a crate I had to break open not two rooms before.

Alekhine’s Gun

Alekhine’s Gun

Alekhine. One of the greatest chess champions. Not only for his timeline but for the whole history of known chess players. He was eager for finding smart, precise moves, he was rather an attacking side even in his defensive schemes. So, it is actually a cool name for a Hitman-like spy operative, who’s supposed to very selective and cautious in his covert work of dispatching enemies and revealing their secret plans.

However, when we’re talking about this specific title, Alekhine’s Gun, we’re actually putting ourselves in quite a strange stalemate position. To be brief, it is the “enjoy the good part and suffer a lot of shortcomings as well” - type of game. 40% rating on Metacritic should warn you as well - even if it’s underestimated, Alekhine’s Gun is definitely not for everyone’s tastes.

If your a fan of Death to Spies games like i am this is the third entry to the series as the devs had to work indie as their publishing license expired so they had to Crowdfund & Kickstarter their work but it didn’t go well so Maximum Games published and helped them complete it. You still play as Semyon Strogov with some familiar gear such as Chloroform and throwing knives but you have less weapons and equipment then before with less space to bring items for the next mission so choose well. Depending on how you perform you will earn points to buy new weapons, equipment and upgrades for your guns to use in the coming missions. There’s a new Instincts mode that gives you awareness of where the enemy is looking at and who finds you suspicious but also is a meter that tells you if you can knock someone out instead of spotting people unlike before so you have to regain that meter by doing objectives if you want an alternative to Chloroform. The overall gameplay is mostly similar with different objectives and different disguises but you can’t go prone stance anymore, crouch sneaking only effects noise and you can’t ride vehicles anymore either then the overall map is much smaller less complex linear even at times making some areas rather difficult cause of how cramp it us but you can back to wall to hide as well as surprise attack from plus performing “accidents” is easier then before at varied locals with missions getting more progressively complex as you reach the final mission. This time its not just historical missions but there is an actual story now compared to before with the biggest weakness is that it doesn’t use in-game cutscenes unlike before instead using pre-rendered art stills but still gives a great thriller spy story. Graphics are better then before and help with the immersion and believability despite the level size. The soundtrack is alright like games before it though at times the audio doesn’t sound as good or as clear. Overall not bad but it could’ve been more despite that for what the game is its a decent entry to the series that you can buy on sale if you want to know how Smeyon Strogiv’s story ends or need another social stealth game alternative.

This game is pretty bad.

The controls are very wonky and difficult. The cursor just doesn’t move right, the click detection fields are not where they should be based on the pointer of the cursor, and just generally controlling Tiana and figuring out what to do next is frustrating. The minigames are terrible and unclear, and they seem to just play themselves. Overall, only the music, art and voice acting are good, but the gameplay is ROUGH. My daughter couldn’t really enjoy this one, the controls just don’t work well and there’s too much reading required for such simple gameplay.

The Amazing Shrinking Giraffe

The Amazing Shrinking Giraffe

I always thought there is no such thing as perfection, but today I learned something different. The beauty of this game drastically exceeds the human perception, but I, as a Wild Animal myself, have just stared into the pure visage of God. There is no doubt that Paul Bird, the so-called “Developer”, is nothing less than a prophet of the lord. This morning I heard the angels sing the gospel of this prophet, who they claim is just a man, yet his power, creativity and will of imagination is something beyond our world, that even God himself does not dare to question, for otherwise the wrath of the prophet shall sunder him.

My boy Paul whipping another dinger outa the park with his new game. The Amazing Shrinking Giraffe is another classic hit that puts you in a fully explorable universe and with only one quest… kill the snakes, i was genuinely impressed from the complexities of the different universes and this is a must buy for the low price of 4.99 and don’t listen to the two people who voted not recommend because they obviously do not know what they are talking about and don’t recognize this modern artform.

Bunker - The Underground Game

Bunker - The Underground Game

A review would not do you much for this game. You either love it or straight find it dissatisfying.

For the game, the story itself is not very special. It may work ten years ago. Nowadays, you can find all those randomnesses pretty much everywhere. On the plus side, the humor is tolerant, you may giggle at a time, that will depend on the references, so you either get it or don’t get it. My favorite part is the interaction with E.M.O., the supercomputer, too bad they cut him short.

Prepare to use a guide for the puzzle, some of them make no sense, again, is all base on the references, so you either get it or don’t get it. On top of the puzzle, this game also offers “33 super secret achievements”, trust me, they don’t call it super secret for no reason. They don’t fit entirely in with the story, is just something extra you can do. You need to count on the community if you want to unlock them all. One of them is so super secret that you will probably never going to achieve it, don’t know if it bugged, can’t find the answer on the forum.

Fun retro classic point and click adventure game filled with communists, computers and cats! The story is wacky: you guide a nerd into escaping from a communist bunker. Lots of silly jokes, lots of vodka and funny computers. A lot of computer games references which I loved. It’s almost like a time travel during the cold war era and into the eighties.

The graphics are okay, the music is… err communist. Sadly there’s no voice over. The dialogues and descriptions are funny, you either love it or hate it. The difficulty is nicely done, the game is challenging but never unfair. Some of the puzzles are like minigames, totally original ones. The only times you’ll really be stuck is because you missed an access to a room, otherwise it’s fairly classical stuff, with tools to use and items combo in the inventory.

“Degenerate Souls” is typical Game Guru game - long loading times, default menu (look and music), same HUD.

Gameplay is exactly the same as other games and maybe even worse because of animations and lack of ambient sounds (well, we’re in forest and no bird chirping?)

You get killed pretty easily and it’s easy to avoid being killed, but it’s just more time consuming.

There is no zoom to aim remote enemies - and they can shoot you quite easily… (some of having instakilling weapons).

I don’t feel like there is much to say - it’s just working garbage.

REDSIDE episode 1

REDSIDE episode 1

In the exciting technotriller REDSIDE , the player will visit the Soviet side during the Cold War.

REDSIDE is a series of games related to one plot, characters, events and the universe. I present to your attention REDSIDE episode 1 - the first game in the series.

During the operation to free Soviet citizens, the GRU special forces group receives information about the existence of an international channel for the supply of chemical weapons components. Intelligence assumes that someone is preparing a terrorist attack using a chemical warfare agent “Sarin”. Neither the targets of the terrorist attack, nor the executors, nor the customers are known, which means that the consequences of such an attack are unpredictable. In the context of a new round of the Cold War gaining momentum, such an attack could lead to the beginning of the Third World War. To prevent the worst scenario, the GRU uses all its capabilities and conducts a number of special operations around the world. Will it be in time?

  • A twisted plot will send the player to carry out missions in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The game takes place in 1996 in an alternate universe.

  • To solve a combat mission, the player has more than 20 types of weapons available, from pistols to grenade launchers and sniper rifles.

  • Where firearms are useless, ammunition and additional capabilities will cope with the task.

  • In addition to brute force, the player can use cunning - elements of tactics and stealth will help in this.

  • How long have you been hunting terrorists from a drone, riding armored vehicles, or blowing up enemy patrols? Special missions and minigames will make your adventure even more exciting.

The Price of Freedom

The Price of Freedom

It’s free, it’s short and it’s great.

I only downloaded The Price of Freedom because it was free. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. After a rather straightforward but fun intro, the story takes a turn to reveal something that sohws it is much more than just some run-of-the-mill free VR game. I won’t spoil it for those of you who haven’t played it, but the story gets to some pretty creepy, screwed up and shocking places.

Ultimately it’s only a taster as to what is to come, but already I’m dying to see what comes next, and I’m willing to pay for it if it lives up to this prologue. My only concern is that the next episode maintains the momentum of this one. Personally what I’m hoping for in episode one is:

The Price of Freedom is a great game. You play the game as the character Agent Zero, a female agent, on a mission to kill the mysterious Benjamin Miller. The controls, graphics, atmosphere, voice actors and soundtrack are sublime, making you fully immersed in the game. The game is also story rich and inspired by true events no spoilers, telling a dark and intriguing story that will leave you anticipating the next chapter which the developers plan to release in this episodic series. The gameplay involves solving puzzles which are of medium difficulty, keeping you interested and immersed. The game is flawless and also free to play.

Short Analysis

Irony Curtain: From Matryoshka With Love is developed and published by Artifex Mundi, usually attributed to making Hidden Object Games. Recently they broke the mould a little when releasing My Brother Rabbit and have now released their first adventure in the point and click world.

Real player with 14.8 hrs in game

Irony Curtain is a delightfully clever adventure in the ‘old style’ of point and click classics. It has all the elements - meaningful story, detailed graphics/animations, professional voice acting, obtuse inventory-based puzzles, mini-games, and a lot of running back and forth across scenes. It does not have complex dialog trees, which I appreciated. Instead, it has simple dialog choices and a number of cut scenes.

You play Evan - a child of capitalism who is in love with the idea of communism. Through a wild series of events, he ends up in Matryoshka and discovers that life under ‘The Great Leader’ is not what he imagined. He is thrown into playing a role in a revolution of the people and the rest is just good fun. Evan is a bumbling hero and his antics within the communist bureaucracy are quite entertaining.
