Light Tracer 2: Bright ambition that needs some more work.

Light Tracer 2 is a Puzzle solving RPG that needs a lot of reworking for its core gameplay loop though conceptually is a great idea for a game.

Gameplay

Starting with the puzzles in game, they are for the most part really clever and well thought out. Some of them get really involved and take some consideration to find a solution, with some benefiting from using this second god type character to get a view of the puzzles and help you see things from a better perspective, other puzzles though are much simpler and often have exploits that weren’t intended by the player to do. While playing you are encouraged to explore the environments to get items for crafting recipes but more often than not it ends up being a redundant task as early on you aren’t a strong character so going out of your way to get these resources means you’ll fight creatures that out number and often overpower you meaning when you do kill the creatures you’ll often end up low on health and your reward is a often nothing useful to recoup the cost of the battle. While fighting enemies and doing puzzles you gain XP/Currency that you can use to level up your player, gain new abilities or progress the games story and that’s where things get bothersome. The biggest issue in the game is that your characters XP/Upgrade points are using the same currency for the progression of the games story, so it becomes a game of “do you want to level up, or unlock the next area?”, because of this you’re often just burning through the game by doing puzzles, getting just enough XP/Currency to progress to the next puzzle, then after finishing 6 puzzles you can either level up your character or go to the next island or optionally do the remaining puzzles on the island to get a small amount of XP/Currency. This quickly becomes a problem as most creatures/items on the map don’t give you anywhere near enough XP/Currency to balance this out. You are encouraged to discard the resources you gather as they all have a value of xp/currency you can recycle them for. Even if you do collect enough items to craft a health potion it will cost you 50 points of the xp/currency to craft instead of being a free crafting system it costs the resources and a fee. This seems like something that can easily be fixed just by adding a secondary currency for the main gameplay progress separate from the player xp/currency so hopefully this is something the developer can look into in the future. The combat in general is not that satisfying and seems more like a after thought rather than something that was fleshed out. Enemies attack patterns are just annoying and you’re often interrupted mid combo more often than not resulting in a a very unsatisfying combat system. Normally this would be remedied by blocking or dodging and using something like invincibility frames but this games block feature is locked behind upgrades meaning your only option is the dodge feature which is just a normal dodge with no invincibility frames and normally that would be fine but most creatures have at least one attack that you can’t space yourself far enough with the standard dodge. I think in general terms of gameplay there needs to be some QA as the core gameplay outside of the puzzles is just not that enjoyable when it could be fixed really easily by adding invincibility frames to the dodge feature and making the player not stagger so easily then also adding a separate currency/method of progressing the story than the currency used to level up the players stats/upgrades. There were a handful of bugs I experienced during my playtime and reported to the dev that hopefully will be removed before the game is released.

Arrowpoint

Arrowpoint

Arrowpoint is a very nice Indie-game. You are riding on the back on a horse along a corridor and try to shoot targets with bow and arrows While the horse is autorunning, you only have to concentrate on the shooting, which is a little bit tricky but makes a lot of fun. The best part of the game is the surreal background, because after some normal targets, a big flying whale appears. For me, this alone is a reason to recommend the game. It is new and cool. Handling is very good, but there is no option for the mouse sensitivity. Graphics are sweet, music is very good. Overall, it is a great little title.

Definitely a fun game, even though it doesn’t last that long. It has good replay value for a while. Would certainly love some new levels and mouse sensitivity slider.

Pros:

  • Looks great aesthetically

  • Nice physics

  • Fun gameplay

  • Awesome music and menu

  • Dirt cheap!

Cons:

  • Can’t change mouse sensitivity, and the stock sensitivity is a bit fast for me personally

Overall, a great game and it shows that you can make good games. Looking forward to the next game(s). I will keep playing to try and get a better score.

Apex Construct

Apex Construct

This game is a lot of fun. You will feel like a bad-ass fighting robots and hacking your way to the heart of a reality shattering conspiracy. Bow combat is fun and challenging, and I enjoyed hunting for passwords and secrets throughout the twisted labs and factories. Graphics are crisp, voice acting is solid.

It took me about 9 hours to complete the main campaign, but I did spend a lot of time hunting for secrets (which I still haven’t finished finding).

Despite having a lot of fun with the game, it does have a few bizarre shortcomings that might be dealbreakers for some people. Audio is not well balanced, with loud music, or even the sound of your own bow and robot hand loud enough to drown out enemy noises. The mission select map is confusingly laid out, and some secrets appear to be shared between different missions, which makes keeping track of progress difficult. Areas can be revisited for deeper exploration, but only by replaying missions (including being forced to replay all introductory dialogue and the tutorial every time you revisit the first mission to find missing secrets). The ending is a bit underwhelming, and could really have used its own boss battle, rather than reusing the previous one.

Experienced on Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers

One of the best things about Apex Construct is all the options available so you can choose how you want to experience the game. You can choose to teleport or you can choose joystick locomotion (free locomotion). You can choose to play seated or standing. You can choose snap turning or smooth turning. You can even decide if you want a vignette or not during turning. You can choose what graphics settings you want.

I played the entire game seated (with a front 2 sensor setup). I probably would choose to play standing if I had to do it all over again and set my sensors for roomscale setup. I did experience some added frustration and difficulty by not having a roomscale setup. You need to quickly aim & move in all directions while on the move.

INCARNA: R•AI•D

INCARNA: R•AI•D

‘INCARNA: R•AI•D’ is a sci-fi style adventure game with lots of puzzles and plenty of hidden things to find. You get about via way-point platforms, but you can walk about freely on each of those platforms but you teleport between them. While the graphics are low-poly they have a clean look to them with some great animation giving it an alien world style with lights and crystals everywhere making the game feel quite magical. There is a little bit of everything to do in this game from bow and arrow shooting, to really complex puzzles that don’t give you a single clue about how to finish them which will eat up the gaming hours. I think £16.99 is a great price and most people will get their money’s worth in gameplay hours here provided you are willing to try and find every hidden cube. I for one love it and its easy for me to recommend it to others.

A good 2 hours of gameplay, very simple controls and a neat story.

Throughout the game it never became clear if the events play out in “reality” or in a simulation. Not that it matters.

The movement system might feel limiting, but it fits well with the combat.

At some point I assumed that the game is much longer and I still hope that there will be additional content later.

Also there is a balanced mix of puzzles and aiming skill challenges.

I recommend this game for the casual player with a fable for bow and arrow games.

Waves of goblins and orcs walk past as you try to protect your portals with a bow. The aim is precise - you can teleport around the tracks with an aimed arrow and blow up barrels if you can hit them

Played on the Rift S.

Graphically is nice and decent. I felt on the Rift S I could do with a little supper sampling to sharp it out. The game runs very well. Lighting is nice and so is the textures. The maps designs are vivid and different in design. (3 levels to play)

Audio is really funny when a Goblin dies or gets hit by an arrow. It had my making noises in laughter that I have heard come from me before. Overral the audio is fine. No 3D audio and the music is louder than the SFX.

Twisted Arrow

Twisted Arrow

I just got done finishing Twisted Arrow, and overall I’d say it was a great experience.

While the art and models could use some improvement, I absolutely loved the level and enemy design. One of the things I’ve been craving in VR are some large scale bosses to really let me feel a sense of scale in the world. This game delivers on that very well.

Traversing the enviroment was something that I was skeptical about at first. In general free movement is really nice in the majority of games, however I found myself enjoying the node based teleport system in Twisted Arrow. The levels that you travel through are fairly large and I found the teleproting rarely detracted from the game, in fact the I found the system to be a a solid way to direct player movements throughout the level and it never felt overly restrictive.

This is NOT a wave shooter, it’s closer to Bullet Sorrow but with a distinctive art style . Much bigger play area too as you move through a city, sometimes atop cranes or battling it out on top of a skyscraper with armed drones and choppers dropping troops in front of you. There’s multiple ‘travel points’ to choose from and cover like cars and storage containers (lots of destructible scenery) and i thought the movement model suits the game. It’s well enough done that you can stake out an area without being ‘dropped into it’ without any cover. Unlike say Metal Assault, if you have a large play area you can use plenty of space for cover.

Vengeful Rites

Vengeful Rites

A MUST-HAVE EXPERIENCE FOR ANY LEGEND OF ZELDA/FABLE/WITCHER FANS.

This game is a unicorn. Not only is it an Early Access success story that has been continuously developed for almost 3 years; it’s also a VR game that has a full 15+ hour adventure complete with voiceover work, puzzles, mini-games, unique boss fights, and a huge world to explore. Everyone seems to compare it to Zelda, which is pretty accurate, but the devs have clearly taken inspiration from many of the great RPGs.

The combat feels a lot like Zelda but I also get strong Fable vibes at times. You have your sword(s), bow, and magic, all of which have their uses. There is a talent tree to choose your specializations, but I find myself utilizing all the offensive abilities no matter what my spec is. Melee combat is notoriously hard to pull off in VR, but somehow these devs got it right. You need to make wide and fast swings to inflict the most damage, but flailing your arms wildly will only result in weak glancing blows. Parrying is actually required and it makes melee combat feel like a true sword fight.

So here’s the long and short of it:

Until Nintendo gets off their butts and brings us Legend of Zelda VR…

This is the closest you’re going to get. I mean that in a good way.

It’s clear that the developers (who actually respond to suggestions- thank you so much for adding WMR support) were obviously influenced by classic dungeon crawlers along this vein.

The world is bright and cartoonish, but not over the top.

The best analogy I could draw would be if you were inside Windwaker; there’s a very similar feel to both the graphics and the gameplay.

UPDATE #2: Wow! This game just keeps getting better. Buy this now. Join and enjoy playing co-op with an awesome set of fellow VR Orc slayers. The new Ice Spells and Revive Arrow add cool features and novel attack strategies. These developers really listen to the players and have done a great job.

UPDATE: No one has the right to have this much fun. The multi-player mode is truly a gem. Unbelievable fun and a workout–-my Fitbit groans after ten minutes. You better be prepared to duck axes from every corner of the map. You need teamwork to get to the higher waves but it is such an enjoyable and addictive experience. OPT out of Betas to reliably find server games; but, Asia, Europe, or US—someone is always there or will join you shortly. You will need help if you want to live to fight the Orcs, defeat that fire breathing Mother of Dragons, the armored Giant, and the hordes of axe throwing Orcs.

Buy this game now and your fun begins!! For you gals, some of the best players are the ladies.

This is the VR game I play for multiple reasons: Terror; Immersion; Exercise; and, fun with other people.

I scream with agony when killed by an axe from an Orc–-the immersion is so real. In the co-op game, you really feel a part of a team effort. Others rely on you and I count on others as they revive me when I become the dead “Axe Collector” or the ashen “Dragon’s Toast.”

We own 25 VR games. This is always the one we turn to first. It is a workout and is flat out addictive. Additionally, besting my husband is great fun.

The arrow upgrades are neat; my favorite is the dynomite one. The game runs smooth and has never crashed on me.

Honestly right when I started the game I though it was pretty nifty. After making it to 10+ waves a couple of times and having to start all the way over every time I became tired of it pretty quick. There are 30 waves total; i wish there was something that let you retry a couple of times before having to completely start over.

Princess Kidnapper is a first person, wave-based defense archery title. In this game, you have kidnapped a princess, and held her captive in a tower. As her calvary comes to her rescue, your task is to take them down by firing arrow before they can get to the tower.

These army doesn’t attack you, their only objective is to rescue the princess. This means you will only be focusing on attacking them as they charge their way. There’s no locomotion, as you are stationary on a tower. You will be equipped with a bow and arrow as you take down a variety of these soldiers, each with their speed, health point and weakness. There are also power-ups which you can obtain by shooting down the birds who carry them. These power-ups enhanced your arrow, some requiring you to hit the enemy to work, such as explosive or iced.
