Alex Hunter: Lord of the Mind

Alex Hunter: Lord of the Mind

Wholly unremarkable. There is nothing to separate Alex Hunter: Lord of the Mind from any other hidden object game. Even that title is the kind of gibberish you’d expect a Random Hidden Object Game Name Generator to spit out.

There’s a lot of it, though. Apparently it took me nine hours to complete.

This is middle of the way on the “Mountain Crime: Requital” scale.

I’d recommend this game, but definitely buy it on a sale or in a bundle or something. I enjoyed it enough to recommend, but certainly proceed with caution.

Overall, the game wasn’t bad. There were a few puzzles that were poorly drawn and made the solution unclear, and some with TERRIBLE sound effects that made it a pain to complete. I don’t know what it was about this game, but many of the puzzles were tedious and didn’t feel fun at all. Sometimes Alex Hunter can be rather finicky with what he can and cannot do so that was slightly laughable.

This game is now added to my favorites, harping back to games like the Blue Tea series Dark Parables with the beautiful details throughout the game and lovely graphics, this game reminds me how much can be done with these type of games when developers really think to add lots of unique touches to make it more engaging.

This is not a HOG game as there are no Hidden Object scenes but it does have the same kind of design to it with some simple mini games sprinkled throughout but if you enjoy beautiful graphics, and lots of little details such as Journals are voice acted and you can listen anytime by clicking a play tab, there are memos you find throughout the game that get added to it’s own journal and each one is unique so graphically it’s really lovely to look at and read.

House of 1000 Doors: Evil Inside

House of 1000 Doors: Evil Inside

Got this series of HOG games on a good sale and it didn’t disappoint. Detailed and rich backdrops and fun cinematics. I especially like the extra touch of creating an item during hidden object searches give it more depth than just point and click. Naturally the story and puzzles are quite simplistic at its core but I play it mainly to relax and have a hot cuppa in between doing other activities. Only gripes are when you click on a magnified section it started to glitch and strobe which sometimes went away if you waited and clicked on it a bit or you went out and back in to reset it. Also the main protag voice over was quite terrible with intonation and phrasing but it was serviceable. hehe I got the deluxe version with the game guide which I didn’t notice till I had finished the game and it’s unlocked bonus section. Haven’t bothered to replay the game to get all the hidden scary faces and got too lazy and impatient to play without hints but it was pretty easy to get at least 95% of the achievements. I can’t wait to see what the other 4 sequels have in store and how it progresses the story hopefully. I think most of this series got a good review level except for maybe one but totally loved my first foray back into HOG games since I used to partake in quite a few on the old iPad1 when it was first launched. Definitely get this as part of the whole series on bundle discount or sale.

This fourth entry in the series has new developers that have significantly changed its look and feel. It keeps its concept and usual cast of characters, but there are new voice actors, a new protagonist (who is boring!), and very different graphics. Luckily, despite the jarring change, it’s still good.

The story is definitely weak compared to previous entries. Fans would be disappointed. However, the gameplay compensates. I played it on “hard” mode and it gave me quite a challenge! The point-and-click adventuring puzzles are for the most part logical, but not always obvious. Some are quite obtuse. The puzzle mini-games are good and satisfying. There aren’t many hidden-object scenes, but they are adequate, if too easy.

House of 1000 Doors: Serpent Flame

An absolutely beautiful game to play with the same character that is in Family Secrets. Once again interesting and sometimes intriguing stories to go along with the game. Variety of mini-games that vary in difficulty. This game also has the strategy guide built in (if needed) and the hint button (also if needed, and I had to on more than one occasion.) I am looking forward to playing the other games in this series. Thank you once again to all the devs that put this lovely game together. Thanx

House of 1,000 Doors: Serpent Flame is the 3rd game in the House of 1 000 Doors serie. Once again you play as Kate. Giant snake are coming up from underground and wreaking havoc across the earth, and you are the only one who can save the day! Your mission is to gather the elements needed to complete the machine that will destroy the ancient snake coming to destroy the world. To do that you will have to travel back in time to four different era. The story is really engrossing and the puzzles are just perfect; hard enough to be challenging but not too hard that they break the flow of the story.

This is a good HOG (Hidden Object Game) with some great graphics, good background music, good story line, and great game play.

Positives:

Lots of locations to explore. Lots of hidden object mini games. Game play offers hints, a strategy guide, and a location status map. Bonus section follows completion of the main game. The game is somewhat anti-climatic at the conclusion, but still enjoyable to play.

Negatives:

Game appears to only support 4:3 ratio resolution. Installed this game on 3 different computers and all 3 came up in a 4:3 resolution instead of filling the more modern widescreen 16:9 monitors. Game does offer different monitor resolution settings and options, but still unable to take advantage of entire monitor screen real estate.

Mind’s Eye: Secrets of the Forgotten

Mind’s Eye: Secrets of the Forgotten

Get it from a bundle or on some massive sale if you really thirst for it, otherwise don’t bother.

The game does have charm in story and the visual novel-ish character designs, but it also has some serious issues:

  • The game is incredibly dark. Like looking at a black corner for a slightly less black item, while having bad resolution and grainy textures-bad.

  • There are things happening, but no real progression, plot change, or character development. It’s like a teen detective story, in a good inclusive and bad simplicity-way.

As far has hidden objects go I would give this a C+ maybe a B-. This is almost entirely a hidden object game but the objects are very specific from scene to scene. Some don’t select very easily and others need you to have a very specific camera angle. Over all the game is good but very short and the graphics are rather poor. Cinematics are alright and if you care about the story they fill in some blanks. The graphics of each scene are a bit grainy making it difficult to identify some items. This game has absolutely zero options to improve graphic quality in its menus, though maybe over sampling in graphics card control panels would help a bit. I had to turn off the custom mouse cursor as it kept having graphical issues (thankfully this is one of the only options aside from music volume).

Shtriga: Summer Camp

Shtriga: Summer Camp

A pretty short 2 hour run-of-the-mill HOG that doesn’t seem to have anything new to the table. It works pretty well if you’re just here for the gaming aspect of HOGs, I’ve encountered no bugs or issues others have voiced out. Fair warning though, both the puzzles and hidden object scene of this game pose no challenge which could equate to a very dull experience. There are maybe 1 or 2 puzzles that pass the time enough, but again it might fall into tediousness than actual difficulty. There are moments you could potentially miss an item (outside hidden scenes) because it’s either not sparkling or just very hard to see.

I wanted to rate this as recommended, but one game-breaking bug ruined my experience.

I had to restart after playing for about 2.5 hours.

This game should have been properly play-tested.

That bug is:

! You should have 3 smiley buttons when you reach the corpse of a man. There is also a puzzle to unlock the door in this location. Don’t solve this puzzle. First collect the 4th smiley button from the corpse (attached to his pocket). If you don’t collect the button and unlock the door, then you won’t be able to come back to this corpse afterwards. You are stuck forever. Then your only option will be to restart the game.

The Jolly Gang’s Misadventures in Africa / Масяня в полной Африке

One of my favorite games while growing up. Such a fun game with many hidden clues and a good plot. The russian version captures all the character quorks and good humor from the show. A bit sad that there is only one part of this game on steam wich is part 2. Would love to play the entire series wich incude part 1 “Under Yellow Press” and part 3 “Euro tour”. Also would be nice to have some of the achievements from the game as steam achievements. Overall 10/10 game, recomend to everyone. Although it will be a little bit underwhelming for those who do not speak russian, since the english dubbing is more than a little bit lac luster.

Heeeeeeeee-he-he-he! Masyanya!

~Masyanya Kuvaeva

There are good games in Steam. There are bad ones too. A lot of them. Like… a lot. Tons and tons of bad games… But the thing is – there are also WTF games. The games that are neither too good or too bad, but… well, you know how it is. Some games? They’ll just make you wonder what the f**k is going on here. And this one? It’s literally made of such “whatthef*cks”.

First thing first, what the fck with the title? See, this game is based on a somewhat famous Russian character from the animated Internet show of the same name – Masyanya. And the original Russian title was “Masyanya in Total Africa” (“Масяня в Полной Африке”). What the fck is “Jolly Gang” and how changing one title that means nothing to English-speaking audience to another can help selling the game? What were they thinking?

Dark Strokes: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom Collector’s Edition

Dark Strokes: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom Collector’s Edition

This one is an absolute treat, I was pleasantly surprised by how high the “quality” of this game is. From the graphics to the story, it was all pretty great compared to most other HOGs I’ve played. I’d say it rivals a whole lot of what AM puts out.

First off, the art is really gorgeous and a lot of the puzzles were very beautiful, the HOG scenes too. I really loved how interactive the locations are, with some easter egg clicks and lots of animated objects. Although beautiful, be warned all the animation and clickable bits may make item/spot-hunting a wee bit frustrating when you see your cursor change.

Dark Strokes 2: The Legend of the Snow Kingdom (IHOG)

(This is a standalone story, so don’t worry if you’ve not played #1 yet)

Options include separate sliders for Music and SFX, Fullscreen, Custom Cursor, Widescreen and Low-quality. There are three difficulty levels, from Casual to Hard.

Wonder of wonders, our protagonist is a male for once! The story combines several fairy tales into one unique story, and throws a bit of clockwork-steampunk into the mix!

There are 35 locations to visit, each hiding a collectible snowflake. Be on the lookout for 12 magic scrolls during your journey, as well.

Eternal Journey: New Atlantis

This is my 2nd playthrough and I must say I am loving this game. It’s not very hard and I am enjoying the story and the different aspects of the game. I make great use of the quick travel map which has the options of showing where there are actions available and whether you have found the “special” hidden object in each scene. The special objects are notes. This game has a lot of gameplay to it. The first time playing it through took 11 hours! The story is SciFi and about Martians so the story is up to the player as to whether it is believable or not. I highly recommend this game.

Writing a review of this game some 9 years after launch is… tricky.

The highest supported res is only 1600x1200, although there is widescreen support (yet oddly when recording the game, it only records at 4:3).

Voice acting is prevalent throughout, this is however more often than not amateurish at best.

There are no Steam nor ingame achievements, there are however collectables. These do serve purpose and add a little to the backstory and are worth searching for.

In contrast to many more modern HOG’s there is a vast number of areas/locations and sadly there is a LOT of going back and forth. Thankfully a map is provided which allows for fast travel between locations, use it or you’ll end up getting lost (said map also marks locations will collectables).
