Woah Dave!

Woah Dave!

Every criticism I read about the game feels deeply unfair. Look at a game like the original Mario Bros, or Ms. Pac Man, or Centipede or Tetris. Sit there and tell me with a straight face that those are “simple” or that they “lack depth”. It is possible to find brilliance and depth within elegant simplicity; we see that in modern titles like Minecraft and Downwell and Molemen Must Die! just to name a few. And you will find that elegant simplicity here as well.

In the swamp of games that is available in today’s market it could be very easy to dismiss this game quickly as a turd, after seeing it’s admittedly crude graphics. And I could even see a person becoming disenchanted due to the lack of obvious game instructions - it’s left to the player and yet it’s all there to be taken-in and easily deduced if you are observant.

It’s good, but it feels like the endless mode to an awesome game that doesn’t exist.

This is an entry in the “elimination platformer” genre, a genre that has been dead for over a decade. Back in the days of the arcade and early home console, this type of game was one of the supreme rulers, including classics like Bubble Bobble, Balloon Fight, TumblePop, Joust, and Mario Bros., just to name a few.

However, when you think about all those classic games, they always had “waves” or “levels”, but Woah Dave! Just throws you into one long level that progressively gets harder. Eggs and Skulls drop randomly from the sky, and you can throw skulls at eggs to produce coins, or you can let the eggs hatch into monsters. If you leave the monsters alive, they will turn into three progressively harder enemies the longer they are left alive, each which yields more coins when killed. Sometimes a UFO will appear to mess with platforms if it’s not killed fast enough, and sometimes a “Woah block” will appear that can clear the screen of all enemies. And that’s all there is to the game. No special items, no multipliers, no different levels with different platform structures, no surprising new bosses or enemies. Just survive for as long as possible and collect coins for a high score. I feel like a lot of people are going to play this for ten minutes and then forget about it.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V: Brave New World

If you’re going to get Civilization V , you need this as well as Gods & Kings . Both of them are true expansion packs and they add a lot to the game, cumulatively speaking, so I’d say they’re not as outrageously overpriced as some of the game’s other DLC. For fans of Civ IV and earlier, I would honestly say G&K+BNW puts the game on par with the rest of the series. If you can only pick one for now though, I would recommend BNW.

I’ve been playing the various Civilization games since the original release in 1991 and in fact I still have that first (pre-Windows) version on 3.5" disk. I have had Civ V for years, but just upgraded to the “Complete” version because it was on sale and I wanted several copies so I could multiplayer it with my kids. I thought I’d play it through with the DLC on singleplayer, to see whether we should use the DLC or not. I wish I hadn’t bothered.

Yes the DLC has changed the game, but I’m not sure it’s for the better. So far I’ve played it through a couple of times, and both times I’ve seen sudden “late game” changes that have ruined the experience.

Box Maze

Box Maze

The game is fun for a short while, glad I got it at a 90% discount though. Music/SFX just about drove me crazy…

Achievements were the only thing that kept me going after a while, thankfully abusing the save/load game function can make the more tedious ones less annoying to obtain. It can also be used to make the game completely trivial by removing every enemy from each level…

There are definitely better platformers out there, but for the discounted price there is some enjoyment to be had chasing 100% achievement progress. Just don’t expect to spend too much time in-game before it loses its charm and becomes tedious.

Box Maze is a casual indie platformer that is pretty easy from the start to the end. The purpose of the game is pretty much to get from point A to B while collecting cupcakes, potions and finding hidden rooms while avoiding to get hit by the different enemy types scattered aound the various levels. Final version of the game has 100 levels and the level design is simple and pretty oldschool and enjoyable to play.

The game has 170 achievements that is fairly easy to obtain

I bought Box Maze at an discount of 51% at 0,49€ and im really happy that i did as it was a fun platformer experience that deffently was worthwhile the cash spend and after playing it i would deffently say that the full price of 0,99€ would still be a bargain.

I really like the game. It is perfect for a few quick rounds. Very interesting to find the right strategy. As it is with card games there is an element of luck of course but that’s just the nature of the beast, I guess.

Real player with 198.4 hrs in game

Unfortunately very disappointing

I was really looking forward to this but it is not the classic game from 1989. It is either a later version or the card game. It constantly creates the situation that your hand is full of nations without the corresponding tables being available. Then you have to put these cards on the bar & then, when the tables come up, you don’t have the cards anymore - stupid.

In the original game you knew the tables upfront & if they were full you know that you can put the corresponding cards to the bar because you don’t need them anymore.

Carcassonne - Tiles & Tactics

Carcassonne - Tiles & Tactics

edit : changed my review to NEGATIVE. The reason being that there has been a bug in the game for many, many months now where players don’t get to see their final scores in the game on most occassions. There’s not much point playing a multiplayer game if you don’t know who won!!!

I bought the physical version of Carcassonne two weeks ago on a Saturday morning. After a couple of games with a friend and working out how to play it I decided to invest in this digital version. It seemed like a good game and playing the digital version was going to ensure I’d understood the rules properly.

The game is true to the original, playable and quite pretty, but for this price, the user experience is very poor.

Sounds:

The background ambient sounds are as loud and clear as the interface sounds, so it often feels like the game is trying to tell you something, but it’s just a background noise. Making this effect worse, the sounds play totally at random, which means the same sound will often play over and over again, which can only mean it’s signalling something, but it’s nothing. There’s no option to turn off just the ambient sounds.

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018

This game has huge potential, so far the developers have implemented a very creative locomotion solution for a sport no one imagined could work well for VR. As expected there are bugs for an early release product but the team have released consecutive updates that have drastically improved the experience in my opinion. I look forward to the final version of this game.

Pros

-Very fun and engaging

-Great workout

-Creative locomotion for moving through the field, shooting, passing etc. (Room scale is amazing)

This is the only VR game going where you play full matches as a single player and even though I don’t use foot controls it is very immersive.

Some older reviews mention the controls being quite bad. This was the case when the game first came out (they were god awful initially) but now if you remove the comfort settings you can turn freely and control the ball freely.

Controlling the ball and dribbling well can be very difficult at the start, and for the first couple of hours the game will be quite difficult.

Peggle Deluxe

Dear Peggle,

We had been friends for quite a long time before i got to know you really well. We grew up together, we played xbox together. It was fun! But when we started to race that’s when things got serious. You have made me laugh, you have made me cry. Sometimes I wanted to punch you in the head, but I could never do that to you, you were always so nice and fair to me. Even after one-hundred (100) HOURS of playing peggle, I have realized that there is nothing else in this life that is more important than this game. Peggle, without you, I am nothing. I am so thankful you came into my life and I hope that we never have to part ways.

Real player with 228.3 hrs in game

highly recommend. every gamer should play.

EDIT: I have now 100% completed this game, finished a couple of months ago. The story line that goes through the period of time in your life while playing this for the 100% kind of becomes the peggle story line, somehow. I saw myself getting over life hurdles the day after peggle hurdles, not sure how they do that, but when I completed the game, I was suddenly done with school- minus a few ceremonies and tests.

The mechanics of this game are beyond good, the physics simulation lets you make the coolest shots with just basic knowledge of geometry, such as the tangent line approximation formula and implicit differentiation, and makes you feel extremely good when you hit a really good opener that clears half the board in one turn.
