Days of War: Definitive Edition

Days of War: Definitive Edition

I had to change my review of this game after the recent changes made to it that came as a surprise and a clear indication and confirmation of a lot of things I have been noticing lately with Days of War and it’s developers.

When I backed this game on Kickstarter in March 2016, I was immediately drawn to it because of what I saw. I was 90% their target audience on who they where trying to attract. An old DODS player, not afraid of hard recoil and fast paced fluid play-style. However, with a hitch. I was a DODS Realism player so what attracted me the most was seeing every weapon in Days of War having a ADS mechanic.

BEWARE!!

This game is absolutely and completely dead!

–-

Not much of a recommendation - quite the contrary !!

— The game that was released 30. January —-

Everything below still stick, but now there are also levels and bots… but it’s still clunky and fugly and broken in a lot of ways in regards to achievements, guns and hit registry. It’s nice with the addition of new guns that you can unlock, but the guns are really not much of an improvement, the level requirements are nuts, and it’s also really annoying that if you don’t stay for the end-game summary your progress is lost in every way - I can understand that as a way to motivate people to keep playing, which would be perfectly fine IF it was actually a nice game.

Abyss of Death

Unfortunately I’m not first ;c But anyway the game itself is rather nice. It still could be better but i enjoyed it. After playing for 1h i completed only 4 levels so there is a lot more to do for me ;p (based on the “20 levels” trailer ). I found about this game on reddit when devs posted some test trailer or smth, i was like - “well let’s add this to wishlist it’s not so expensive” and to be honest i don’t regret this (yes i only played 1h as for now but the gameplay is good anyway). When it comes to the Devs studio (“Vainture studio” as they call it ) after some research (visiting their socials xd) i found that’s their first game so :

The other review (only one around at this time) is correct for the most part. This is not a game that you should spend money on (I got it in a bundle myself.)

Your “convertiplane” flies above the ground. All enemies are on the ground. All your bullets and rockets are fired in the direction the plane is facing, at a specific angle towards the ground. The “behind and above” perspective means that the only way you can do any sort of aiming is by lining up the target directly “due north” of the plane, and experimenting to see how far away you need to be for your shots to start hitting it. Thankfully the green HP bar on the targets is a big help to find out when your shots actually hit their mark.

This is not a good game. Read the other reviews for more details, but the worst parts are:

  • Controls/Maneuvering is basically non-existant. It’s simply tank controls. You can’t change speed. You can’t change altitude. You can’t even move laterally (strafe).

  • It’s impossible to aim. You can barely even see where you projectiles are firing to.

  • There’s no variety in levels.

Positives:

  • The helicopter model looks cool if you take a screenshot

Beyond Enemy Lines

I’m a fan of Project I.G.I. and already liked this game very much when it just came out, because of the similarities in the core gameplay, and I missed this feeling a lot. BEL fullfilled my expectations and is still getting better with every update.

Going completely stealth is hard to master. In case of failing to stay undetected - which you should try as long as you can - you really need to aim precisely, otherwise you’re a dead man if you have no cover nearby. This should be a tough walkthrough challenge for Centerstrain01, who knows his videos ;)

Word Tactical is recently thrown around a lot and it usually refers to games like Operation Flashpoint, Armed Assault, Ghost Recon, Swat etc. Despite their history, many tactical shooters have being changed over the years and they are going further and further from their origins with each new entry.

Among the good old games there was a small first person shooter developed by Innerloop studios called Project IGI.

IGI series was not very popular and was killed after the release of a second game, IGI 2 Covert Strike. Despite that the series is unfairly underrated, both games are very enjoyable to play even today.

Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear

Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear

ok people lets be real here , you can’t spend 3.99$ on a game and expecting it to be as good as battlefield I mean you get exactly what you paid for a simple and short indie rail-shooter game.

-the plot : I can resume the plot to this , you’re an US soldier in a mission to invade Iran cause they have nuclear plans lol and the game make it like you’re the hero who is risking his life and killing Iranian people because they are bad guys ( army propaganda ) the thing is if you invade a country you have to expect that those people of this country will fight back and defend their lands ,you can’t just walk in and do what you like in the name of freedom and the ending was so dumb and cheesy that makes you laugh , invade a foreign country and kill their people in the name of freedom and then call them terrorist cause they resisted and fought back to protect what they have ?!!! Seriously?!!! A soldier of a fighter is called a hero when he protects his country not invade others.

Achievements & Trading Cards! That’s all that it is worth with Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear, really. Buy that low-budget on-rail shooter only in the bundle, during some hard sale… Or avoid it, to save some self-respect.

Just like its predecessor, Heavy Fire: Afghanistan, this game fails to be enjoyable or impressive in any way. The devs made some homework, sure! Now the levels are a bit more colourful and engaging, the game’s sequences a bit more versatile, the visual effects and sounds - more tolerable… Even the forte - gunplay part - gain some additional work around, making this game looking more like proper war shooter, rather than some random virtual shooting range with wooden targets.

Men of Valor

Men of Valor

OMG! I’d been hoping to see Men of Valor (MOV) released on Steam for years. I even wrote to Valve several years ago when they started to include classic games from years ago in the Steam store, asking for it to be included because IMO it has a superb set of multiplayer maps that cover large open maps, temples, Jungle, Sniping, indoor and outdoor CQB, Urban, Industrial, Hillside and Valley maps. It’s now 15 11 years old (as of 2019), so as you’d expect, some aspects are a little dated, but the actual maps are excellent and despite its age it still looks great. The original add-on map pack, that included an extra five multiplayer maps has been included with this Steam version expanding the original maps to 21 multiplayer maps (see below for a full list, plus a brief explanation of each map). Every major battle from the American involvement in the Vietnam war is represented in these maps. I do hope we see some servers coming online regularly. Sadly over the last several years, when I have found a server running you’d only see ta few players at any one time, so some of the bigger maps were never included in the map rotations and most of the ones that were felt empty and when joining, you spent more time looking for players to shoot, lol. There were exceptions such as Charlieville and the two temple ruins i.e. Cambodian and Jungle Ruins, all three being small CQB maps, with some sniping.

I actually remembered playing this game on the original Xbox back when it came out in late 2004 and as I am writing down this review, I still have my physical copy of the Xbox version right here in front of me. I absolutely love this game as I played the campaign over and over again that I lost count. You may be wondering: What’s so special about this game? Well, I am going to tell you.

Men of Valor is a 2004 PC (and original Xbox) first-person military shooter that takes place in the earlier stages of the Vietnam War (1965-1968). You play as Dean Shepard, an African-American soldier who took part in the conflict alongside with his squadmates: Greaser, Smooth, Zook, Hodges, and all other characters (Oh my goodness, I even remembered those characters from long ago). The game does not have a legitimate plot but what I love about this game is the presentation. Men of Valor provides a great historical perspective and experience, placing the player to know what is like in that conflict. The campaign is divided into four different areas of the war in 1965-1968: Da Nang Outskirts (rooting out the Vietcong from Da Nang, taking part in Operation Starlite), Iron Triangle (eliminate the Vietcong stronghold that resides in northern Saigon and being part of the joint US-ARVN Offensive), Khe Sanh Hill (push the North Vietnamese Army away from U.S hilltops firebases in 1967), and the Tet Offensive (terminate the North Vietnamese positions out of Hue and breaking the Siege of Khe Sanh).

Mini ship wars

Mini ship wars

Lucky me gets to write the first review for Mini ship wars (the developer didn’t bother capitalising each letter in the title).

This isn’t really a game, it’s a ripoff of a GameMaker Studio 2 template/tutorial for making a top down shooter game. It’s complete garbage. GMS is a complete garbage engine, and copying + pasting a template for the engine isn’t suddenly going to generate a video game of any quality. They didn’t even bother making a fullscreen mode.

Why would anyone do such a thing, publish such a terrible non-game on Steam, you ask? Well take a look at the ridiculous $10 USD price tag, and it suddenly becomes clear. This is a nasty cash grab. Then you look at the name of the developer, “Phoenixxx Games”. They’ve pulled this crap before. That’s all they do.

Sniper Squad Mission

Sniper Squad Mission

Sniper Squad Mission, as the name suggests, lacks any sort of creativity or gameplay for that matter. It consists of 6 short waves (using the same recycled 2 maps.) There is no cover and there are no movement keys - the player just stands still in the same spot while shooting 1 enemy at a time as they spawn in until there are none left. The game can be 100% completed in less than 10 minutes. Why it is priced at $5, let alone sold at all is beyond me.

Real player with 0.3 hrs in game

Huge waste of time (10 mins). Premise is that these people with snipers all shoot from you in the open? You are also in the open by the way. Spoiler alert, you can’t die too.
