Sands of Aura

Sands of Aura

Review written as of patch 0.01.02, 48 hours after EA release.

This is a relatively lengthy review, with significant details on many game mechanics and aspects, but I’ll stay as spoiler-free as possible.

First Impressions:

Having played 20 hours in this game, I’ve played through most, but not all of the content. In its current state, the game’s story Isn’t terribly long, maybe 5-6 hours, but there’s easily twice that much again in side content and extra areas to explore. Overall the game is very soulslike in gameplay, but with more than enough to set itself apart. Fun to play, fun to explore.

(This Review is based on 12 hours of gameplay during Early Access release patch + Patch 0.01.02, played on a custom controller, no experience on keyboard/mouse)

Sands of Aura is an isometric action RPG and does a great job at utilizing classic souls-like elements for its level and enemy design, combined with a sense of world- and island exploration akin to The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Let’s get more into some individual aspects, their current status in this Early Access, and how I personally would like to see them being improved upon.

gameplay review: fight stuff. that’s about it, if there’s other stuff to do i haven’t fount it yet

so i got a bunch of bugs:

game has crashed multiple times… at least it has autosave i guess?

graphics settings don’t save

if you level up multiple times from one monster (like you can from certain golems) you only get one skillpoint. didn’t check stat points, but that’s likely to have the same issue

seems like most areas only drop gear with extremely low levels. so the only place to get high level gear is the shops… sometimes. as a side effect, there’s no way to earn zs quickly, so high-level gear in shops quickly gets prohibitively expensive

I played for about an hour today and so far it’s pretty good fun. The maps are large and it is really an experience getting from point a to point b. I do wish there were keyboard character controls, but that could be something for when this comes out of Beta. I did have an issue once where I was being attacked by an invisible enemy and another glitch were things stopped attacking me all together. I’m looking forward to playing more. The voice acting so far is really really good. I’m excited to get the part I voiced.

Arcaxer

Arcaxer

This game is an extremely enjoyable, albeit very physical VR experience. There is a distinct ebb and flow to the combat this turn-based RPG provides, an element I was initially skeptical about. Having come from playing many VR titles with real time combat, I excepted a turn-based VR game to get tedious.

I was incorrect.

Your turn is spent selecting which of the eight abilities you can bring into battle you will use, determined by AP(action points), and expending them. You are free outside of battle to tailor your loadout at any time, providing the ability to incorporate new abilities on the fly, or tailor your kit for upcoming challenges. There is also melee combat which allows you to expend your health rather than your AP to attack, providing a way to mix up your choices in combat.

Real player with 56.5 hrs in game

A unique experience, one you would not expect from a VR game.

One of few VR games that run heavy against the VR trend of first-person EVERYTHING. Arcaxer plays like the third person RPG game with hawk-eye’s view. While there is the option to play through any part of the game in first-person, the hawk-eye’s view is an enjoyable experience, one reminiscent of watching a tabletop RPG playing out before you. Even the combat pays homage to classic RPG games. This is the only part of the game (to my knowledge) where you are limited to first-person perspective. The combat plays out with turn based systems similar to classic Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Unlike those classical RPG games, however, you’re never stuck waiting for your enemies' turns. You will duck and dodge and you weave through incoming attacks. You will swing your blade and literally throw spells as you strike down your foes. Combat is turn-based, how you play is not.

For that price literally no brainer, gem.

Unique features in its genre, also across genres. A diamond in the rough.

The game is more deep than it looks - 14 various skills.

1 - Automatization of eating while running or doing other activities, batch automating mining, not just clicking - so it is not burdensome way aspect of survival

2 - Unique quests system, - Quest navigating orientation with an exclamation mark directly over the world scenery, with clever informative popup messages automatically fading out after a few seconds or after completing the quests reflecting it’s state, scrollable -not taking up the entire display.

Despite still being so early in its development, this is a very fun game. The devs are very responsive to community feedback and surprisingly quick to fix issues for such a small team. If you are looking for a full out medieval sims game… it’s not quite there yet, but if you enjoy designing castles and fighting bandits, it’s already good to go.

Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer’s Legacy

Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer’s Legacy

Procedural roguelite RPG in a vast world

Unexplored 2 creates a vast, rich fantasy world for you to discover. It has a cool twist on permadeath: your character may die, but the world might persist. The game is an ambitious, procedural action-RPG without grind, xp, or gold. Instead the story is all about your choices and their consequences as history unfolds.

As the titular Wayfarer you take on the quest to destroy the Staff of Yendor, for which you’ll have to traverse your world. Along the way you’ll meet tribes, encounter magical creatures and explore ancient ruins to discover mythical weapons and historic items.

When you die…

The game is challenging and you will die often. You may make a wrong choice, take on one too many creatures, or forget to stock up on food before traveling a desert. Whatever the reason, when your character dies, they’re gone. No autosaving or quickloading.

However, you can choose to continue your adventures with a new character in the same world, a few years later. Your new character will witness the result of the choices your previous adventurer made. You can leave items in a safe spot, ready for your next Wayfarer to pick up and use.

The world ends

You can try to fulfill your quest to destroy the Staff of Yendor with consecutive Wayfarers in the same world. However, when you die during your final mission, your world ends. Permanently.

So, make sure you are prepared well and know everything there is to know about the last and most dangerous part of your adventure.

When you fail, that world vanishes. The only thing left to do is to generate a whole new world with its own history, and begin the quest anew.

Key features

  • Radical content generation: Ludomotion’s radical approach to content generation creates many layers of unique content, every time a new world is generated.

  • Generative storytelling: Though every Wayfarer’s ultimate goal may be similar, every hero will have their own world, story, and encounters.

  • Systemic depth: The game features many systems and you will discover something new every time you play, even after hundreds of hours of gameplay.

  • Legacy system: Actions of your past heroes impact the fortunes of those that follow in their footsteps. Use your legacy wisely to give your successive adventurers greater hopes of completing their quest.

  • Permadeath in a persistent world: When your hero dies, they stay dead. But you can choose to return to the same world with a new Wayfarer. Or, if you prefer, begin a new adventure in a completely unexplored world.

  • Unique presentation: The worlds in Unexplored 2 are presented in a unique and beautiful art style, beyond what is conventionally expected from a generative game. A stylish lighting system sets the mood and adapts to the time of day and local weather conditions.

  • Orchestral adaptive soundtrack: Your adventure is accompanied by an orchestral, original soundtrack which reacts to the action and decisions you make as a player.

This has been a little game I had under my radar for a while mainly because I like RPG Maker games and the business theme looks pretty interesting. Plus it had a similar art style to OFF and while OFF was okay, it’s art was pretty interesting. So is it good?

Story:

In a world where corporations run rampant, companies can bribe to get what they want. women are treated as mere plants that look pretty and the mere act of refusing a product is enough to land you in jail. In this world, you live as a simple drone until events happen that put you in an adventure that might change the world.
