Xuan-Yuan Sword VII

Xuan-Yuan Sword VII

I don’t recommend this game.

I actually pre-ordered this, as I’m a huge fan of the old Xuan Yuan Jian Series; I enjoyed Gates of Firmament even though the combat was very bad, the story made up for it. I played this game in Chinese (audio/subtitles, which don’t have a text skip option so you have to wait for audio tracks to finish playing or skip the entire cutscene).

In-Depth Explanation:

XYS series has always been well-respected for it’s plot development, the gameplay has been on and off (with the migration to 3D gameplay basically killing all elements of FUN because this studio seems to not really have the skill to manage 3D development). So let’s start with the plot, your character starts off as a caretaker of his sister, the advancement of the story is closely linked to this situation, thus the entire game can be summed up as “hero tries to save the sister”. This is the entire plot of the game. There is no over-arching goal to defeat evil, save the world, learn about other cultures, visit other countries (which was common in other XYS games), this game is just “save the sister”. This plot is delivered through a strict on-rails story advancement.

The franchise of Xuan Yuan Sword has a long history, its ever-lasting life could go back to 90s, if Final Fantasy is well known from Japan, then Xuan Yuan Sword is that well known from China. It’s its 30 years anniversary now, with Chinese Paladin: Sword and Fairy franchise also from Domo studio, the shiny two famous titles were widely recognized within the RPG genre in Chinese gaming community. As folks say, “the Two Great blades are the guardians of Domo.”

XYS VII is the 13th instrument of Xuan Yuan Sword games. It also brings some big changes along its release, e.g the first time in the entire franchise being an ARPG game with open world(previous titles are turn-based on). Although there are 12 titles before this one, you don’t need to play its ancestors to understand the story. Though all Xuan Yuan Sword games are based on Chinese dynasties history and mythology, but each one’s story happens in a different time, there aren’t any close connections between each other, only sharing the same universe as a whole.

古剑奇谭三(Gujian3)

After series of disappointments to find a decent story-driven RPG among modern games and tired of replaying classics I’ve decided to give a chance to a Chinese RPG. So I’ve bought Gujian3 and… put it aside after the first mission considering it to be some mediocre slasher. Last year I gave a go to another Chinese RPG - Xuan-Yuan Sword VII and was relatively satisfied by its story ang gameplay. After that I checked my Steam library and found long-forgotten Gujian3. Struggling to drop it during the first mission I’ve reached Skyelk and finally found what I seek in games - a decent RPG with involving story and interesting characters. And it appeared to be so involving that became my “second reality” for two weeks. Thorough gameplay took 100+ hours and almost none was boring.

This review has no spoilers and is very long.

Before you buy it, you should know this game is heavily story-driven and exploration-based. If you are a gamer that like exploration, collecting rewards, and/or storytelling, you are in for a treat!

This single-player game does require internet connection to run. This very inconvenient function might have something to do with IP protection during its initial release in China to prevent pirated copies. Unfortunately, the IP protection was carried over to the Steam version, likely because the developer wasn’t planning to release the game in English during its initial release in 2018.

Good Quality and Content for a RPGMaker game.

Very responsive developer always around to answer queries.

Oriental story, audio and settings.

Character building, satisfiers system similar to a survival game.

System unlike those others that have Hitpoints of several thousands, or deals thousands of damages per hit, characters and damage dealings stay at minimal hitpoint and deals reasonable low damages.

Plot, drama and gameplay is fine, alittle dull once the first capital is taken.

But,

Unable to customize much of the controls bind key with F1 console, unlike most other rpgmaker game.

This game is worth your time and hard-earned cash. Essentially, the game is a jrpg about Japan in the late sengoku jidai. You get to pick your starting class and skills and sex which can really make the game interesting.

The best part about this game, is that it really does all it can to make you feel like you are taking on the role of someone’s life. A lot of role-playing games these days sort of play like a power fantasy as the player does his or her best to reach a point of apotheosis, or Ultimate Warrior. However, this game’s goal isn’t to make a God out of the main player or the character, as the main character is more or less known as a great warrior for being one of the first in the region to rebell against the unjust nature of the current Empire. The biggest rewards come from taking part in the story and completing side quests, rather than grinding repetitively.

Jade Empire™: Special Edition

Jade Empire™: Special Edition

Jade Empire could easily been seen as the first step for Bioware towards more simplistic and action based gameplay however it manages to avoid the scorn many felt towards the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series by providing a beautiful and inspired world, the writing is excellent and the characters are interesting.

You start the game off as a student at a martial arts academy. Things quickly change however as you are charged with saving the world and restoring balance in the world, pretty standard hero stuff really. You won’t be on your great all important quest for long before some random peasant will ask you go save a cat from a tree however. Jade Empire is a game that loves procrastinating. Despite what should be a fairly urgent overall plot you will find yourself spending most of your time solving the problems of various little people around the world. Sometimes I’d even forget why I was doing all this in first place.

I would definitively recommend this game, it starts slowly but as I progressed in the story I appreciated it more and more, despice some flaws in the gameplay and the annoying bioware “black & white” morality system.

Technics:

win 7 + xbox controller, no problems , nothing to complain about.

Gameplay:

The controlls are a bit rusty and at times ungainly, it doesn’t respond as well as it should, making it at time very difficult to resolve a fight. The advanced combat style system, while a good idea could do with some streamlining, there are almost too many styles (something between 15 and 20) but you end up using only a couple of them exclusively.

This game has a lot of potential but it is overrun with bots and there is nothing being done about it. Bots have been an issue from the start of the game and all it would take is a few minutes of active attention on each server per day to identify them and ban them. Even if you dont get them all the first day the numbers will dwindle quickly. Normally you could just play around the bots but these bots are actually taking up the most valuable resource in the game. This resource can either be mined, received as a quest reward, or purchased. The resource is used in over 90% of all crafting, enchanting, upgrading your character in anyway, etc. The bots are able to teleport, and knock you off of the resource without actually damaging you. This wouldn’t even be ok if they did damge you so that you can kill them and get your resource back, because there are so many bots they are programed to have one knock you off and another take the resource that way you cant kill the one who got your resource. Even if you do kill them, they can resurrect and teleport back to the node in seconds where it should take them several minutes to get back on auto run. Another issue is that pvp is so heavily punished in this game that if you kill a bot that was there just to take your resource and not damage you, then you end up suffering more because you can no longer gain xp at full value. Thats right, the pvp penalty effects your growth as a player which is another thing the bots dont care about as they are just after the resource. Once you gain negative propensity because of killing a non hostile bot you are then freely targeted by other players while you try to get rid of the negative propensity. The penalty for killing one none hostile bot is -999 propensity which means you need to kill 400 monsters within 5 levels of you to get back to getting full xp again.

Typical auto-quest game with tedious quests to repeat over. Traps to pay at level 30 - 40.

So many hackers ruining game-play across all servers.

I’m few days into the game and here’s my take on the above.

At level 30+, you will face the problems of having no slot to keep all the important items.

I think this is deliberately designed so people would have to pay some bucks to buy more slots to keep all the items. It becomes very annoying to progress if you don’t pay for extra slots.

At level 40, if you are free-to-pay, you will experience super slow down in quest completion as your starting gears (with free-to-pay upgrade along the way) and stats improvement started to hit the bottleneck. The time to complete each quest becomes 2x-3x and the story quest also become much harder. Yet another trap for you to either go back to auto farming materials for a long time to get a rare item or pay to buy “blue rare starting sets” at the cost of $29.99.

Vast improvement compared to S&F 6. Impressive graphics, storyline is good and I love the new battle system. Bosses are challenging at higher levels and definitely requires some familiarisation of the skills to win, especially the last few. Played 2 rounds already at normal and difficult levels and gameplay was smooth. Did not experience any crashes or black screens or whatsoever. Only the bosses challenge after finishing the game is buggy. I played it in chinese, looking forward to DLCs. I do wish for an extra slot for the accessory though coz the buff they give are not really substantial but if you can stack 2 of those it’s probably more useful. Some accessories have to be worn throughout for convenience too so it’s quite troublesome to keep changing. Not my favourite chinese paladin series in terms of storyline but at least the ending seems to be a good one.

This game is great and what most open world games should aspire to be. Let me first state this game isn’t open world but are big maps that feel open world even tho most or instanced.

What they got right:

1. Trash mobs don’t just drop random stupid loot, they drop stuff u will actually need to use in crafting foods and forging ur gear.

2. It’s actually a challenge to upgrade gear and find better gear, ur aren’t just RNG handed broken crap.

3. The combat system is pretty smooth for a budget game, like better than GENSHIN IMPACT or any other similar game that’s been released in a while. Makes Darksiders look clunky.

Be like a ghost

Silence is your ally. Darkness is your most trusty friend. Use them to get close to your enemies, so they will never even see your blade cutting them into pieces.

Take on impossible challenges

For a true ninja warrior there is no such thing like an impossible challenge. Three enemies, seven, maybe an army? What is your definition of impossible?

Sneaking Around

There are over twenty words for sneaking in the Ninja’s vocabulary. He knows even more ways to stay unnoticed by the guards. In the game you’ll use all of them. You’ll also have a variety of malee weapons at your disposal, which will help you in resolving problems in different ways.

Eliminate Enemies

Perfection is the most important skill of a ninja. Perfection in combat. Perfection in planning. Perfection in execution. Without it, you will be punished for every mistake.

I gotta say, I really like this game. You control one of three characters (warrior, berserker and mage, although you have to complete the first boss to unlock the berserker and the second and third to unlock the mage), each with different mechanics,

stats and upgrades. Using just the mouse you can maneuver your hero and perform an attack, which costs mana, to kill enemies that keep spawning. The enemy diversity is good, each one with different attack types and harder enemies appear as you progress through the story.

This is a very disappointing game, can’t say it’s THAT bad, you decide:

+The one and only plus - battle mechanics - 1st time I’ve seen it in indiegala minigame made by the same person I guess, and what can I say - there it was WAY better - to move around you click left MB, to dash and kill you click right MB - now about the problems of the game

-You can’t dash while moving - you have to release LMB if you want to click RMB - like, what’s the problem? When a lot of enemies around you even the slight stop can kill you.
