Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff

Swords ‘n Magic and Stuff

Sword n Magic is one of the best games that I have had the pleasure to play. I picked up the game in September for a friend’s birthday since it was on his steam wishlist. I wish I had found this game sooner, and was able to find it on my own, because there are very few games that I am amazed at. It is a huge surprise to me that I have not heard of this game sooner, or that this game has not exploded everywhere like other games have. It is by far one of the best games I have ever played. I never feel guilty about spending time exploring this world and learning its secrets. Whatever price it is at, is an absolute steal. The developers take great pride and care in their work of art they call swords n magic n stuff, and it shows throughout the entire game.

I am loving this game. Its aesthetic is beautiful and consistent throughout. Even in this early stage of its development I’ve invested 25+ hours in it and can’t wait for the updates to come (and they are coming regularly).

It’s greatest strength is in the feeling of exploration that is engraved in the core of its gameplay. Every nook and cranny feels like it could hold some secret or lead to some interesting new place and more often than not it actually doas just that.

My second favorite thing is combat. Even if it seems simplistic at first, as you can just attack in the direction that you are looking, because of combat roll, jump/double jump and glider movement, battles are dynamic and engaging. Large part of the fluidity of the combat are enemies and unique attack patterns they have. Those two things combined make up interesting learning curve as at first some enemies might seem really difficult, but as you fight them and learn their attack patterns and how to counter, you slowly start to feel comfortable against those enemies, sometimes even to the point where they can’t even touch you (if you are good enough). That sense of getting better at the game as you invest your time in it is rewarding and hooks you right in. With devs promise of new and more challenging enemies (Like skeleton horde mode in the “Witch’s eve” update) as well as unique weapon abilities and magic, this part of the game is sure to get even better.

Death Tales

Death Tales

After 4 hours of gameplay here are my thoughts.

The game is visually stunning and amazing to look at. I thought the colors would be weird, but it flows and is captivating. The art style is both whimsical and creepy at the same time. The soundtrack and sounds are not overpowering and very thematic (as a content creator I turn them down a bit for streams & vods but for normal play you don’t need to). Mechanically the gameplay is smooth and the challenge is appropriate. You will get lost in the gameplay and be drawn into the world. The equipment choices and power ups allow for a variety of playstyles - scythes, hoods, armor and spells are plentiful and have all sorts of fun uses. Speedrunners can run through areas once just to collect gear to give them an edge, and completionists can run a stage multiple times to collect all of the rewards. There are also events, shops and quests to add to the depth.

Victor Vran ARPG

Victor Vran ARPG

TLDR

This game is definitely worth a buy.

The core of Vran is a classic dungeon crawler. Kill monsters, take loot, upgrade equipment, and experience the story. The action is fantastic, and there are countless ways to be creative with your builds. There’s enough depth to this game that people are still creating unique, competitive builds 3 years after release.

Voice acting is excellent, but the campaigns are short and full of tropes, although they do the tropes well. Motorhead is a really cool, original idea in many ways, but still pretty tropey.

Quick Summary: Victor Vran is a “simplified” action RPG in the same vein as Diablo, Torchlight, and Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. In terms of art and level design the game is extremely similar to Van Helsing, fighting spooky monsters in a sort of steampunk world. The game does have some different mechanics though, that will take some getting used to if you’ve only played the previously mentioned ARPGs:

*You can Jump. This is actually not as big a deal as you might think since jumping doesn’t really dodge enemy attacks very well. It’s mostly used to cancel your channeling spells and wall jump into secret areas.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance

16 hours between Wulfgar / Drizzt Solo and Multiplayer before deciding to put my 2 cents.

First I’ll start by saying that two main complaints are legitimate but pretty exaggerated.

  • Netcode does need work and diminishes the value of twitch mechanics which otherwise work flawlessly Solo but at the same time you’re in a group so unless you’re the type to scream “But I pressed the button!” and rage. It’s mostly an annoyance right now and not bad enough to kill enjoyment of the game.

  • Enemy AI is indeed a bit derpy taking “Action Movie” turns to attack the player. This is most notable Solo. At the same time if the enemy were to aggro stick the player all at once I doubt it would be Solo’d above 2. Hero difficulty. Far as I’ve seen the issue with hitting enemies from range, esp bosses is generally fixed and in the end this isn’t a competitive game. I’ve seen 5/5 star games where the AI is still easily exploited. Just play the game and stop trying to break it.

To start this review, many of the first negative reviews, and highest rated ones, are both much too critical and based off of a low amount of hours.

This game is marvelous, but it would be ignorant to write this review and say there are no issues. Of course, there are some glaring issues. But many of them are no where near as detrimental as some of the high rated negative reviews make them seem.

The worst issue in my opinion is the lackluster AI. Many of the enemies, simply won’t attack you, if you don’t start attacking them. And you get warmed up to that very fast. However, there are some AI, who are very aggressive, and being warmed up to AI not generally attacking you, it makes it feel like… a normal game. However, if you’re playing with a team, I have not yet encountered an enemy who will actively attack you whilst reviving a teammate.

Little Backstory:

Studio 369, after really dark practices by the original dev-team Human Heads Studios, took this broken game into their hands and are polishing it to the bits. Is it perfect? Hell no, it’s still broken in places, takes long time to glue everything together, demands patience from us. Is it fun? Yes it is, especially in co-op, multiplayer. Are they finished developing it? No, they are not, far from it. It just got into the second phase, the post-release one, with much more content to come and an ongoing polishing, and I cannot wait to see what this game will become when it gets 99% finished. It’s still a long way, yes, but we are halfway there, I’m sure about it.

Real player with 40.1 hrs in game

Before I begin let me state that while I do not currently recommend the game (2021-02-20) this decision is due solely to numerous game-breaking bugs. This game has a LOT of potential, but too many things prevent it from living up to said potential. I feel that a player who would normally enjoy the game would likely be raging right after his two hour return window was up the bugs drove him crazy.

First, combat is bad. Not overall. Combat is bad due to bugs. My biggest issue is when you use a power-attack or skill to knock an NPC down. Half of the time (more frequently if it is an elite NPC) the NPC falls down and then his state resets to standing. If this is an elite NPC not only is the NPC teleported to the standing position, but it is also already in a power-attack which cannot be dodged. This can kill you if you are low on life when instead you should have a chance to attack the NPC while it is getting up.

A Journey Through Valhalla

A Journey Through Valhalla

This is a fun game even if you are playing solo. Playing solo is rough because the game was meant for 3 people to co-op. There are some game mechanics I think it needs such as a way to swap out weapons sets during combat and maybe an easier way to loot items. I would also like to see more way to gain experience than just feats. Maybe making skills level as you use them would be a way to go. But, I still enjoyed playing the game, and would recommend it.

Real player with 42.8 hrs in game

I think this game is pretty decent (especially for it being created by 3 people in their spare time) and shows a lot of promise. I’d recommend playing the game with at least one other person as it can be pretty hard solo, but it still provides a pretty enjoyable experience when playing by yourself.

I think this game could benefit from some balancing changes (namely the first boss and the chances of getting better gear, especially for the wizard class) and more content. besides that, this is a pretty cool game.
