In this review I will exclusively talk about the game’s difficulty and the place given to RNG.

You may read customer reviews saying that this game relies too much on RNG, that it’s unfair, stupidly hard, unbalanced… etc. I disagree with those statements.

It’s hard for sure, and unforgiving. But after more than 35 hours of gameplay I’m now able to finish every single run I start (except for some really special vehicules). It has nothing to do with luck, it just requires learning.

I’m going to expand on two points : bosses and essential items.

1. Do you like (slightly) toned down South-Parkian humor?

2. Do you like (slightly) toned down bullet-hells?

3. Do you like the idea of playing the same game over and over ten times, always failing in some regard but learning and still having a fun time in the process?

4. Do you like great rocking tunes and hand-drawn art that fit the mood of smashing a Nazi filled car into a fire-spewing robot and watching them both explode in a glorious union of metal, fire, and meat?

Asteroids… But Roguelite

Asteroids… But Roguelite

The progression/choice is super cool. It captures this feeling I like from games like Asteroids and Galaga, but adds a whole new dimension where score matters (because you get money for upgrades from it), and you’re given meaningful choices.

There’s a couple ways I’ve played it; 1. just trying to get the perfect score streak/multiplier through precision, or 2. brute forcing it with epic upgrades. I am #2 on the leaderboard at the time of my writing, and I felt somewhat godlike with my bombs, shotgun lasers, sniper, shield, max health, etc…

I originally bought this game back when it was first released on Itch.io, and it’s definitely had some improvements since. Unfortunately that also means several exploits/cheap tactics I used to use to reach the top of the leaderboard, have been patched. I suppose it was inevitable.

–———————–

Asteroids… But Roguelite is exactly what it claims to be, and it does a damn good job at it. It starts you off as a weak ship, and you find yourself needing to increase your power at a very quick pace to stand a challenge against enemies.

Scraps: Modular Vehicle Combat

Scraps: Modular Vehicle Combat

From the first bits I played, this is the greatest game. Unlike Robocraft, you don’t have to deal with damage propagation. Instead, you have to deal with cooling the weapons and other functional parts, supplying power to the same functional parts, and being able to grab enough scrap to upgrade your vehicle.

REVISION: While the multiplayer is essentially dead, the new Gauntlet mode is remarkably fun and unique; a roguelike involving vehicle construction is nothing I’ve ever heard before, and it pulls it off well. There are only two problems I have with it, and they’re more minor nitpicks than anything:

Real player with 74.4 hrs in game

I had been following this game for a while via the old tech demos but had never been willing to pull the trigger on purchasing the game since the demos lacked any real form of game play. With something playable finally released, I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, the actual game play mechanics are awful.

Despite being a car combat game with a focus on building your dream deathmobile and watching it get destroyed in actual combat, trying to actually build a fun car is tedious. The actual vehicle construction is fine – however, the developer decided to hide half the parts under a Call of Duty unlock system. Great, another game to grind away at before I can even do anything. Another issue is the game’s money and cost system. To put it simply, in combat, you are supposed to start with a basic car and acquire money to purchase bigger and better cars, all of which can be your personal designs. The way money is acquired, however, is horrendous, requiring players to deposit money on “pads” – a process that requires you to sit in park for three seconds with a giant bullseye on your head – as opposed to just letting you keep any earned money in a manner similar to Counter-Strike. Also, destroyed cars cost money for them to be replaced, meaning that one lost vehicle is all it takes to set you back to square one. Players basically wind up in an infinite loop of never having enough money to actually do anything once combat begins.

Dark Future: Blood Red States

Dark Future: Blood Red States

TL;DR :

Overall, it’s a decent game with great visuals and works well as a “play for a couple hours at a sitting” arcade game. If you pay attention to the developing story, it gets a lot more interesting. Take the time to read everything; it’s worth it, and begs you to stick around for the next chapter. Some of the mission types are a little ugly and grinding, some are great, but in general it’s more fun than not.

Full Review:

I have about 28 hours of playtime during the Beta weekend in addition to the hours playing the release version, so this review takes some of that into account as well.

Based on a board game from the 80s, Dark Future: Blood Red States is a tactical car combat strategy game set in the near future in an American wasteland ruled by a number of warring factions with armoured cars with big guns. The game consists of multiple seasons, with each season seeing you assume a new role fighting for or against these factions. With each season, you have a choice of missions to undertake, be it Escort missions, where you have to escort a vehicle a certain distance, or to just kill as many opponents as you can.

Scrap Seas

Scrap Seas

Scrap Seas is a Vehicle 3rd-Person Shooter Action Rogue-Like. Build your ship and fill it to the brim with every kind of weaponry you can find. Then take it out into the ocean to take part in fast-paced generated sea battles against your Robot Overlords.

FIGHT!

Use your fire power and maneuvering skills to sink ships, robots, and other stuff. Destroy your enemies, and save those you care about. Use your boosters to ram into enemy ships head on or to flee like a coward. Just make sure you don’t DIE, because if you DIE you’ll die forever, and it’s pretty easy to DIE.

BUILD YOUR SHIP

Start with a boat and fight your way to an AWESOME BOAT! Take that boat and fill it with every kind of cannon, laser beam, and whatever the hell else you can find. You can also collect comic book panels which can provide a variety of buffs to your ship. Ah, and don’t forget about melee weapons. Every boat worth piloting needs some buzz saws, or at least some electrified spikes.

PLOT YOUR COURSE

Navigate your way around a generated map. Ensure that you have enough supplies for your journey. Choose your battles wisely…or unwisely, I don’t care. I’m not your dad.

USE YOUR WORDS!

Are you a hero or a coward? An idealist or a pragmatist? A lover or a fighter? Express your character through Scrap Seas comic book panel encounters.

GAMEPLAY

I am using the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X Stick and it works out perfectly well. Although there are no presettings for using a Joystick, the setup is pretty quick and easy. You can personalize all buttons very well and thus, I strongly recommend using a joystick or better a HOTAS for the game, which I believe is crucial for the fun factor of the game.

Gameplay feels GREAT. You can literally feel all the properties of the different plane types you are flying and the effects of how you fly. The principle is very easy to learn and becomes more and more challenging, as you fly different random mission from your base (A flying Aircraft carrier). You will have to either destroy enemy bases on the ground in awesome bombing runs or battle bogeys and aces in challenging dogfights with your steadily growing arsenal of all different sorts of weapons. Once you successfully complete a mission and return to your base, a new mission will wait for you. With every mission you complete, your enemies will get stronger and harder to ward off, but if you die once, you will be back at the beginning and have to start all over again. All upgrades you afforded will also be lost.

I have been playing this game since it first went into early access and now that it has been released I can say that it’s not that good. I was hoping that the issues I was having would get fixed up but now that it’s been released I am giving up on that ever happening.

The game isn’t terrible by any stretch of the imagination, I wouldn’t have played 45hrs of it if it was. Rather it has some fundamental design features which mean its just not that fun. This game is a great example of a sound game (a few bugs here and there but nothing game breaking) that falls flat because design choices which encourage unfun play.
