A great roguelite / platformer that involves lots of action and eccentric style.

Overview

Adventuring Gentleman is a steampunk roguelite platformer. You start your game as a gentleman in a club room: there are multiple other chaps sitting there and telling you the news (aka quests). As soon as you pick your quest: you are taken on adventure, where you need to clean 5, 10, or 15 rooms and defeat a boss. After clearing each room from enemies, you can choose a bonus which improves your weapon or your character. It can be double-jump, flight, double shot, explosive shot, etc. If you kill the boss at the end of the quest – the pool of random bonuses is increased. This improves your chances to beat the next bosses: after all, the unlocked bonuses are more powerful.

AIRHEART - Tales of broken Wings

AIRHEART - Tales of broken Wings

On a flight

Airheart is the story of Amelia, a young pilot and fisher woman who lives in a world among the clouds, Amelia fishes through dangerous skies collecting scrap in order to upgrade her plane and avoiding pirates all in the hope of one day making the catch of a lifetime and you are tasked with guiding Amelia on her journey.

That’s really as deep as the game got in the time that I spent with it but that’s all you really need to keep motivated in order to move forward within the game.

In A Nutshell

Airheart is a roguelike shooter telling the story of Amelia, a young pilot with the objective of reaching the stratosphere to capture a legendary whale, and honor the inheritance received by her father.

The game world is made of several layers, and your home, Granaria, will be on the lowest one. From there, with your at first weak plane, you will need to go around each layer, catching fish to make money, avoiding or destroying progressively stronger enemies on each level, find the elevator platforms to reach the next layer, and also eventually find secret components hidden in boxes around the various floating islands. Each four levels, you will meet a Boss, then once defeated, transition to a new biome, with a different season and appearance to it, different fish, enemy types, and dangers.

Gunmetal Arcadia

Gunmetal Arcadia

I’ll try to keep this short. As of this review, I’ve put over 60 hours into Gunmetal Arcadia. Its combat system is clearly inspired by Zelda II for the NES, and I happened to like that game a lot. Let me be clear, though: the game’s combat isn’t nearly as deep as Zelda II, but I still quite enjoyed it. You can even get an item that allows you to stab down in mid-air, allowing you to basically pogo on enemies.

The game itself is procedurally generated across four chapters. You cannot save and quit, so you’ll have to complete a game in one shot. Fortunately, this can be done in less than an hour, but I would have appreciated the ability to suspend my game like in FTL or The Binding of Isaac Rebirth.

J. Kyle Pittman’s “Gunmetal Arcadia” is his personal love-letter - by his own admission - to both “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link” and “Faxanadu”; with the combat mechanics being largely inspired by the former, and the Graphics by the latter (with him furthermore rigidly adhering to actual NES graphical limitations). This is then furthermore coupled with an enhanced version of his CRT Simulation technology, of which an earlier version was previously witnessed in “Super Win the Game”.

However - while the game looks great, and plays great - the most interesting aspect is the game’s Legacy System, and how it plays into Gunmetal Arcadia’s Roguelite elements. Whereas most Roguelike games expect winning to be an ephemeral goal, only reached after tons of hours of gameplay, Gunmetal Arcadia can easily be won (assuming you play well, and aren’t completely screwed over on your early upgrade chances). Instead of asking you to try forever to finish just once, completing Gunmetal Arcadia actually causes changes - both subtle, and sometimes massive - to occur on later sessions. Even though you succeeded - or sometimes failed - to clean out one particular Unmade Hive, there’s still the next mission to clear out that next Hive (which is effectively your next session).

The Swindle

The Swindle

Unfortunately, despite the absolutely wonderful art, music, style and overall concept, just as many people have reported, loose controls literally spoil an otherwise wonderful game.

As a gamer who loves stealth and loves difficult, but fair games, this one is nothing but frustrating.

It is not a matter of artificial difficulty, the levels, mechanics, enemies, and hazards are all generally fair and reasonable in and of themselves. I have no problem with, and even enjoy a game where you will fail a lot as you learn, knowing it is your fault you failed, or even knowing that the game is designed to make you fail if you don’t do things right…

This is honestly an amazing game with enough style and design choices to give you an experience you can’t quite get anywhere else, however it has a few very big caveats. Starting with the good, the scope is perfect, I didn’t feel like it dragged on or that I needed more out of it, and the pacing is very good. Finale acts as a good test of pretty much everything you’ve learned through your various successes and deaths. I’m more a fan of roguelikes than roguelites, but this game strikes such a cool balance between the two; I wasn’t sure how much of a gimmick the 100 day mechanic would be but it honestly does an amazing job at getting the best of both worlds. The upgrades are all significant enough for you to care about. I normally dislike tweened animation but this game’s style fits it very nicely, visually the game is quite charming. The soundtrack is also really good, I wouldn’t listen to it outside the game but it gets me way more invested while playing, especially the theme when you’re caught. Honestly, there’s not too many exceptionally notable things I could say, but most aspects of the game in general are very solid, it’s quite a fun, charming, and worthwhile experience. As a very loose comparison to give a sense of how the game is, imagine a cross between Mark of the Ninja’s stealth, and Spelunky’s game feel and world gen type.

Tower of Guns

Tower of Guns

10 hours in now and I’m still learning.

Tower of Guns is great some of the best Run ‘n’ Gun Fun available.

The game mechanics aren’t too punishing or lazy, things are simple and work well, when you are fighting through a horde of spikes are shooting a wall of spikes you don’t need clutter and there isn’t.

The gameplay is fast and keeps you on your toes even with a high level gun with a powerful mod to boot, level design is great fun and beautifully imagined. The secrets idea is great fun as you’ll never know when you’ll find one or see a platform above you and wonder whats up there and you may well spend minutes scouring a level for fake walls and platforms long after the enemies are gone.

To me one of the best games of this year, Tower of Guns has far exceeded my expectations. Although I saw some early gameplay on YouTube, I wasn’t sure how well the roguelike/lite gameplay would fit in a FPS. Needless to say, it worked beautifully.

Overview

Essentially, Tower of Guns is about fighting your way up a tower filled with automatons all hell-bent on your death. You begin by choosing a weapon and a perk. As you complete the game, you will unlock other guns/ perks which can be used on different playthroughs. On your way up, you’ll also collect power ups, such as additional jumps, damage, luck, jump height, and difficulty increases or decreases. Additionally, you may replenish health and experience (more on that later) via pickups.

Marfusha

Girls' Frontline meets shoot-em-up

One morning I was looking at new releases at Steam. Usually I don’t find something interesting, but for some reason Marfusha has caught my attention. I briefly looked at screenshots and without a second thought bought Marfusha.

And you know what? Marfusha turned up to be a great game!

The gameplay is simple but heavily addicting. You are playing as Marfusha, a girl who drafted into the army since the country Kazolmya, where she lives is at war with all surrounding countries. Marfusha gets the duty to protect the wall from different robots who try to destroy this wall. Every day you get salary which you can spend on cards and, of course, paying taxes, which becomes more and more expensive. There are different types of cards, some will increase your stats, some will give you a weapon(which can break so you’ll have to buy a new one, keep that in mind), some will give you useful items like mines or barricades.

EVERSLAUGHT

EVERSLAUGHT

Everslaught, what can I say, it’s a dream come true, so to speak, as far as fast games in VR are concerned. I don’t know of any other game that brings this speed of the popular fps genre to VR. You fight with sword, grappling hook and shotgun in constant combination and it works so smoothly that you feel like you’ve never done anything else.

The beginning of the game is very leisurely and familiarizes you with the controls. But one thing is immediately noticeable, you move fast, with dash even faster. Early on you get your first sword and try it out on the first enemies. These are some kind of zombies. There regular types which grab at you and larger ones wield axes. When you kill one you’ll get blood capsules, which become important later in the game. The combat system is not fully physics-based like perhaps in Hellsplit or Blade & Sorcery, but rather designed for fast, action-packed fps play.

Real player with 36.3 hrs in game

This caught my eye immediately, as a fan of Gunheart which ended up getting smooth locomotion+dash teleport+jumping… I have been craving an action title with competent traversal techniques, and I think this game delivers on that.

Here is a random list of details, some which are base mechanics which some might see as spoilers? You don’t start out with everything but I think that is just to give you a gradual introduction as to not overwhelm the player.

[olist]

  • Smooth locomotion is mandatory, and it’s fast, which I enjoy but is likely not for everyone.
