Captain Forever Remix

Captain Forever Remix

This game is awesome.

I’ve played plenty of 2D shooters in space, and this is by far one of them.

I have a lot of praise and a couple of complaints. I’ll skip the praise because you can find that elsewhere, or just look at the gameplay for yourself.

This game’s difficulty curve is ridiculous. Assuming you, like me, haven’t played the original game, you’ll be thrown into the gameplay right away with very little time to adjust to the unique mechanics of ship-building and combat. There are a lot of different parts to build with and constructing a powerful ship is more nuanced than throwing a bunch of pieces together. In many cases, a tiny ship is more effective than a large ship, but building a large ship is half the fun.

There are several users who have written detailed and thorough reviews of this title, I am not going to attempt to do anything approaching some of the excellent reviews that I have read.

I am however, so impressed with this game that I feel I must share my two cents about how immersive and amazing the experience and gameplay are.

Many, many years ago I had a gaming PC…. to put this in perspective, the World Trade Center was still around in those days, we had only elected 1 George Bush and nobody knew what an iPhone was.

An shining example of how Early Access can work and a brilliant mixture of roguelike and space shooter

EVERSPACE™

dares to experiment and comes out a winner.

I’ve had my eye on Everspace ever since last year when it was on Early Access. Reading those words invokes a feeling a wariness to any consumer who has seen hundreds of EA titles rise and fall either in the blink of an eye or suffer a prolonged cycle of non-development and eventual death.

I held off buying the game last year but once I saw that Everspace was getting a final release in May I made a promise to myself to buy it during this summer sale. The discount was not that big but boy was the price worth it.

Deadnaut

Deadnaut

Deadnaut provides a lot of creepy atmosphere, fun and replayability.

When I bought Dreadnaut and entered the game, I didn’t expect much based on the trailers available. It seemed just like all those top-down squad RTS games, which there are hundreds of. It was only 10 euros, so I decided to jump it and test it out.

I immediately reached out for the character creation. I’ve always been one for creating my own party/character, since the game experience feels a lot more personal. The character creation has two minor bugs, which I did not realize were bugs until I read the forums for a tutorial on character creation. The bugs:

In one campaign your fighting off waves of fast moving xenomorphs, through the flurry of fast moving xeno’s you see one of your men get dragged away through a airlock. Yet in another campaign you may be contending with the possessed remains of a former crew driven insane by unknown artifacts, behemoths throwing your soldiers around as artifacts obscure your command and control with horrifying visions of death and torture.

Deadnaut’s is a game that wants to immerse you in its universe. Your hud looks akin to something from a WW2 submarine simulation and your control over your soldiers is sketchy at the best of times. There are a large amount of things to take into consideration with Deadnaut’s and many ways for those under your command to come to harm or die, this may be the one area the game faulters in. It is a real time tactical squad based game, essentially a rogue like.

Nova Drift

Nova Drift

The common description of Nova Drift as “Asteroids + Action RPG” is accurate but there’s a lot more to it than that. I’ve played a variety of “Asteroids with extras” over the years and Nova Drift is definitely my favorite.

Nova Drift is much livelier than most Asteroids-style games, though not as frantic as dual-analog “arena shooters” tend to get. Many Asteroids-style games are slow and ponderous with heavy inertia but the player ship in Nova Drift feels fairly agile unless you’ve sacrificed a lot of speed (and you can usually fix that with other upgrades).

I’ve been playing this a little every day (sometimes a lot), and it has become a little part of my daily routine. My PC runs on my living room TV, and when my kids wake up at the outrageous hour of five-ish, I can relax and chat with them while playing. Most of the time.

This game is totally family-friendly, encourages learning and creative thinking, is visually impressive, exciting, and is just the right amount of challenging. My six and eight-year-olds are constantly asking for a turn, which I allowed early on since they never took long. Unfortunately, their turns are getting longer and longer as they come up with good builds of their own. They have even taken to suggesting upgrades while they watch me, often pointing toward a route to a super-mod that they think would work well. Outrageous. My three-year-old will start chiming in any day now…

GALAK-Z

GALAK-Z

★★★★☆

A great, fast-paced space shooter, that feels dynamic and fresh even after 20+ hours. At first, the difficulty might scare you away, but with practise comes pay-off. It becomes challenging, but never too easy (except for the first quarter of the game). The loot system, which also seems harsh, seems to be just right, though I feel like some items should have been more expensive compared to other items. The content of loot you will find in missions are random, as well as the the provisions of the trader after each mission. This, with the randomized level lay-out and combinations of units and the challenge they offer, is what this game makes so amazingly replayable. Ofcourse, you can get (un)lucky in some situations, making it feel like it’s unforgiving at times. To me, that is a great premise of a game in the traditional sense as it is a call back to the arcade days of the 90’s.

Galak-Z is a thinking man’s game. And a thinking man who’s willing to invest time in his or her skills to fly in space.

Game is beautifully made:

1. Graphics are really well made, and the art style is retro but modern at the same time. Ship and character designs are nice homage to other space operas/shows.

2. Sound is well made too. Explosions feel real, thruster sounds feel gripping, especially when you engage your best, and voice acting is top notch. I enjoy the music because it really adds the suspense when I’m sneaking around asteroid belts avoiding enemy patrols.

Void Vikings

Void Vikings

An interesting game… Recommended for a fans of twin-stick shooters looking for something a little different.

The core concept of paying back a student loan by pillaging local star systems is both unique and provides some tactical options. Should you pursue an expensive yet effective degree and struggle to pay back both the principal and interest, or settle for a cheap but shoddy education and focus on upgrades? Ultimately, you need both the education and the upgrades, but the premise disguises what would otherwise be a transparent grind.

Fun, polished little arcade wave space shooter with a couple of modes including a ‘diablo’ style randomised loot system, customisation, leader boards, and several distinct ships to fly.

Cargo Commander

Cargo Commander

‘Cargo Commander’ is a 2D game where you have to collect cargo to upgrade your character, to level up by new cargo types and to prove your cargo company that you are the best of the best - a real cargo commander.

Desc: TL;DR. ^^ You are a male protagonist working for a cargo company. You have to deliver cargo, which you collect in the levels called sectors, for your company. You are able to upgrade your character with a better suite, a better drill and so on. To upgrade your stuff you need to collect caps. Caps are hidden in cargo or dropped by enemies. There are three enemy types: small, intermediate, big. You can find better weapons in the sectors at certain points to kill the bigger enemies much faster. You start with a nail gun and you can carry two weapons. Every weapon can be upgraded with things like an autofire option or faster reloading. At the start of the game you have three terminals (nagivator, console, magnet) at your spaceship which looks like a cargo crate. With the navigation console you can travel to other sectors. You can travel to popular sectors, unpopular sectors, random sectors or sectors which you are naming. Every progress of every player will be traced and save for the leaderboards.

Real player with 31.7 hrs in game

Cargo Commander is a mix of missed opportunity, above average platforming and quirky style. It’s easy to be charmed by it in the early going but it quickly becomes more of a chore than it needs to be.

The core gameplay is that of a 2D platformer with basic shooting elements. You’re given objectives to complete (basic tasks, typically involving the collection of randomized loot throughout the equally randomized cargo containers you’ll be exploring across level sets known as “sectors”). The ultimate goal is to eventually travel back to your family, who become increasingly worried and frustrated with your absence as days progress within the game - made known to the player through an in-game email system and parcel delivery service.

INTERSTELLAR ROGUE

INTERSTELLAR ROGUE

Ive used steam for years now , have over 100 games and NEVER left a review. This game is gar out, reminds me of starfleet command. Plenty of choice and simple to use. Ive encountered no bugs and hope that this game continues to evolve. Only a few adjustments are neded imo. 1. Would like to be able to sort my cargo and drag an drop. 2. Need other factions to encounter, space is endless and having other species to encounter would be nice. 3. Missiles, we should be able to select the target we want locked. Also should be able to fire without a lock.

This is at first glance a simple and quick game, but as you play it you will find it very fun and addictive. Besides being a one developer game, he is always looking for ways to polish and fix any bugs that might appear.

There are 3 modes of play:

  • Rogue, where your ultimate goal is to defeat the powerful mainframe that generates all S.I.N robots that are a menace to the humanity. You go jumping from system to system, gathering equipment, resources and leveling your ship so you can eliminate the enemies you will find. There are 20 jumps you must do to reach the mainframe

Last Encounter

Last Encounter

I had originally written a negative review for this game. There were some balance/quality of life issues that were driving me nuts and really muddied my enjoyment of the game, and i cited that if adjustments were made then the game would be much more enjoyable.

And guess what? The dev team for this game listened. They have already patched it and made positive changes and I am stunned and happy to see this.

The framework for this game is fantastic - your ship is fun to pilot and weapons are somewhat morphic based on the upgrades you collect, there is good enemy variety and the overall actual gameplay is solid. It is fun to experiment with the various pilots and ships to see what style fits best, and it has a ton of potential overall. On top of this i really like the level design and the small touches in the background like the paralax scrolling, its a great design.

Real player with 24.3 hrs in game

Last Encounter has some neat ideas and mechanics, but it just doesn’t quite work, is severely underexplained, and feels at least a little unfinished. It’s interesting to play, and if you’re tolerant, can make a fair side game to better roguelites, so it’s not a hard pass.

You start a run selecting a pilot and ship, with different attributes and an activated special ability. Those aren’t particularly interesting, to be frank, but the game has a neat weapon system where your shot is determined by three components you can individually interchange right in mid-fight, but in practice, seems like you don’t really get to make a lot of use of this, so it’s just kind of there much of the time. Still, cute idea, and it adds some interest to the otherwise pedestrian twin-stick style top-down shooting. You explore and clean large hexagonal spaces collecting keys to open the exit to move on to the next major zone. Each zone has a theme and style, but sadly the enemies and hazards tend to feel more like nuisances than interesting enemies, and there’s some obnoxious design here (like zone three, where you’ll find enemies who can and will simply focus a laser on you, doing continuous non-negligible damage until you destroy them, but they don’t go down fast, and there can be environment obstacles around which they can shoot through but you cannot, and you also have enemies who will hinder you and move you around). You sometimes, but not always, fight a boss after a zone, and these are lengthy, tedious affairs.
