Flame Over

Flame Over

In this game you play the worst firefighter in the world. The gameplay is awful, everything about this game is terrible. Its a simple idea but with so little polish it still feels like an alpha build. Oddly this game is a port from the Vita so one would think it would be a finished or better product for PC but its actually worse. This game once it got greenlit literally became abandonware the next day with the devs vanishing never to return to the community or fix any of the issues of the game.

Let’s just get this out of the way right now: I love this game.

There is something about roguelikes that I love. Except almost all of them try to be copycat versions of another game. Rarely does a game try to actually do something unique! So what makes Flame Over so different? Is it because you’re slogging through a dungeon/space station fighting enemies, drinking potions that you aren’t sure could kill you? No. Nothing like that. You’re fighting an enemy. That enemy is fire. Electrical fires and regular fires. There are flame overs as well as fire that spit out embers which can set other things alight!

Proof that a twin-stick shooter can be a work of art.

Destropolis' minimalist art style is bolstered by intelligent gameplay with precision weapon and skill mechanics, and persistent level progression across play sessions.

The aesthetics and gameplay are elevated by LukHash’s beautiful synthwave soundtrack and the integration of tempo manipulation with Bullet Time works to create a beautiful example of digital love.

The new update is lit.

My old review was still recommended, but I listed a litany of complaints and it was very negative overall.

That old review is wrong, so it’s gone. Of course I still recommend the game, it’s a blast.

So many things have been tuned, changed, and improved across the board.

It’s a bit easy to start now, but it’s sooo fun. Explosions everywhere. More guns, better guns.

If you want a chill game to zone out after a hard day, this is your ticket.

You get to be the conductor of a ballet of destruction, good luck have fun.

Null Vector

Null Vector

I can’t say enough good things about this game. On the surface, Null Vector is a simple dual-stick shooter, but dig a little deeper and there’s so much more. The gameplay is smooth and very well balanced, the retro soundtrack and visuals make for an exciting experience, and the unforgiving enemy AI is just difficult enough to give you a challenge without making the game impossible. And with all the crazy modifiers, as well as Hell Mode, you are sure to have a good challenge no matter your skill level.

A bite sized twin-stick that keeps things simple, straightforward, and quick. Eight way movement and firing if you’re on keyboard (game doesn’t read mouse) akin to a true original arcade twin-stick, which happens to be my preferred way to play. Honestly, I could see this doing reasonably well in a cabinet.

There’s exactly one thing that isn’t particularly clear in the game (Nanobots). One. Everything else you’ll just about figure out within 4 seconds of having it or getting shot at by it. The classic “one enemy does one thing” holds here, and there aren’t any “go run around shooting every wall” type of obscure hidden things.

Rick Henderson

Nice but kinda smallish game similar to sterenden (or whatever) with some ravin' music

Its fun and challangeing but i feel it could use some more work on the enemy patterns and such as you tend to get the same configuration of enemies alot and some of them have enemies coming from behind and theyre no threath at all but slow to appear and slow to kill and gets kinds boring after 10 times things like that should be reworked. otherwise it plays and feels good.

Rick Henderson

Rick Henderson brings in a familiar flavor of a classic arcade experience. Developed by Fat Pug Studio’s, Rick Henderson is an endless horizontal scrolling space shooter.

Rick Henderson is paying a big tip of the hat towards old school 16-bit shoot ‘em ups.

Gameplay: As soon as you get into the game, you will be thrown off guard because of the lack of pointers and button maps. And not only that, but the game doesn’t let you know about the states, weapons, abilities, or how to use them; you’ll just have to figure them out for the time being.

## Rogue Stormers

IMPORTANT: This game requires a resonably good and consistent connection to play online coop. It caused a friend of mine serious desyncronization issues, such as not being able to see the lightning hazards.

Early access builds of Rogue Stormers were not very good, and notably did not have a cast of varying characters. This release build? Much improved, though at some level I lament the loss of weapon-customization, which was never actually implemented to my knowledge. I first became aware of the game during its initial kickstarter campaign, when it was still called DieselStormers. I purchased it from the humble store and didn't have a chance to finally play it until about a year ago, when it was still in a very rough and bland state.

This is, in a nutshell, a great little timekiller.

Basically you have a number of playable characters with which you go through a series of levels. You kill hordes of goblins and orcs. At the end of each level is a boss waiting for you. Every character has its own gimmick. They have varying stats as well as different weapons. They each have an ability with a specific cooldown period. One shoots a large barrage of little rockets, another gets a short period of immensely boosted firerate, to name two examples. To complement your play style, you find some secondary weapons, which get damaged and eventually broken as you sustain damage.

It’s a pretty fun and original shooter game reminiscent of Galaga.

What makes it good is it’s customization of ships and team composition.

Each ship has it’s own way of firing, and a different sub weapon, so the choice of ships aren’t merely cosmetic.

It also has a sick soundtrack which is definitely a bonus.

The sprite work is well done, I wasn’t confused as to what was what.

Overall it’s a pretty great game with multiple modes that you could play over and over again. Well done

## Asteroids... But Roguelite

The progression/choice is super cool. It captures this feeling I like from games like Asteroids and Galaga, but adds a whole new dimension where score matters (because you get money for upgrades from it), and you're given meaningful choices.

There's a couple ways I've played it; 1\. just trying to get the perfect score streak/multiplier through precision, or 2\. brute forcing it with epic upgrades. I am #2 on the leaderboard at the time of my writing, and I felt somewhat godlike with my bombs, shotgun lasers, sniper, shield, max health, etc…

I originally bought this game back when it was first released on Itch.io, and it's definitely had some improvements since. Unfortunately that also means several exploits/cheap tactics I used to use to reach the top of the leaderboard, have been patched. I suppose it was inevitable.

–-----------------------

Asteroids... But Roguelite is exactly what it claims to be, and it does a damn good job at it. It starts you off as a weak ship, and you find yourself needing to increase your power at a very quick pace to stand a challenge against enemies.

## Simple Sky

_Simple Sky_ is top-down twin-stick space-shooter/score-chaser with some unique ideas. The simple and bright artwork gives the game a friendly appearance, but after I headed into the main game, I quickly realized that it gives the player no quarter. There are 10 difficulty settings, and only two are unlocked in the very beginning. Well, so far, I have yet to unlock another. Please keep in mind that this game is in Early Access currently, and some of my discussion may be outdated by the time you are looking at the game.
