Heart&Slash

Heart&Slash

Heart&Slash is just about everything you would want in a fusion of rogue-like dungeon crawler and hack ‘n slash. Maneuvering Heart is nice and quick, combat feels appropriately hard-hitting and the amount of variety to be found through unlockable content and unique weapon types is downright surprising, most pleasantly so!

Yes, it is missing some refinement, some attacks from weapon to weapon feel less practical than others, difficulty may feel unbalanced being too easy in some areas, but a hassle in others (Copgore’s fight can be a very tedious waiting game) and there are some moments where the camera still bugs out or Heart gets stuck on objects or platform edges at a bad time. Through all of this, I think the game still shines in its intent. Where Heart&Slash fumbles it does so earnestly, but where it succeeds it knocks it out of the park.

Heart and Slash is a Full Suit Without a Tie.

Alright, I’ll start with the blunt of it. I would recommend this game. I may have beaten it within the first two days I bought it, and this isn’t out of grinting it, but I would for sure recommend this game to anyone who needs a good 3D roguelike. The only issue I have with the game is the story feels… lacking? I can’t quite pin it down, but much like a suit without a tie, its masterfully built and looks fantastic. Its just missing the thing that completes it, and until then, something seems off.

METALLIC CHILD

METALLIC CHILD

Metallic Child starts us off in the aftermath of an AI rebellion, where the protagonist android (Rona), needs our help to stop a spaceship on a collision course with Earth. She was damaged from trying to stop the rogue robots herself, so she needs someone who can control her directly via remote uplink. You happen to be her first contact, and thus her mission becomes your mission.

You see, in this game, we may be controlling Rona, but we are playing as ourselves, as a person. Rona will be talking to us directly throughout the entire game. This is a subtle but distinct shift in perspective that - when done right - makes the connection a lot more personal. It’s a premise that’s only possible in video games, but sadly I don’t see it used all that often outside of visual novels. Some of the world-building is done this way. For example, when Rona explains how she consumes a core, you could ask her what it tastes like. She’ll give you a funny look and say that it tastes like raw eggs XD.

Normally, I’d play a bit more before reviewing a game but after 2 hours I’ve beaten the first stage and have a pretty solid opinion of the game. I’ll update this review once I beat the game but, for now, some pros and cons…

The Good:

This is a fantastic Mega Man meets rogue-lite, except replace Mega Man’s lemon dispenser with melee weapons. At the hub you choose a themed stage and boss, each stage has multiple levels and when you beat the boss, you get a themed ability based on the boss’s abilities.

Finishing Games With ADHD

Odd topic to start this review off with, but if you pay attention to any of my reviews, it’ll be on par.

! Not the Robots is/are a great game, and there isn’t much room for me to move on this. Completing games is a hard task if you have ADHD, I have so many games, and it’s come to the point that, most of them I haven’t ever touched more than 5 minutes, some not ever even opened, and It’s not like I’m a game collector. I understand that at some point I won’t be able to play all the games ever made, the human existence doesn’t last long enough. Unless I’m able to see the singularity occur, and become more machine than “man,” I won’t ever be able to play and complete every game. I’d love to, this is my preferred medium of story telling. As I’m sure a cinemaphile would be down for the idea of being able to watch every movie. It’s just not possible. ADHD makes this worse, I get none of the serotonin or dopamine from completing a task, and the more difficult the task is, the more my brain gets “distracted” and completing the task is harder and harder, it is what makes writing these reviews so easy. I have no qualms with ripping apart a well constructed masterpiece, if I have no reward (even chemically) for completing them.

I love Not The Robots, and here’s why you should too:

First and foremost: Nothing is sacred. You can’t just run from one piece of cover to another. Instead, you actually have to destroy your cover to progress through the game. I can’t emphasize how amazing this is – there’s so much more depth than just waiting for guards to move along a set path and running from A to B. Do you start eating from the start, clearing out room after room, or do you go to one end of the map and only eat on your way back? Ideally, you should eat as little as you can while still fulfilling the objective, but of course that’s easier said than done.

Beacon

Beacon

Updated Added 3/24/2019

Keep in mind this is a game still in beta phase, so it’s not quite finished. I’ll likely update my review as Beacon continues development.

I absolutely love top-down shooters and Beacon is no exception, in fact, it makes me appreciate them more. I’ve stuck around playing since it was released on Itch. It’s changed quite a lot, such as additions of enemies and bosses, loot areas, and of course all the bug-squashing, both technical and literal. It’s a little terrifying that there’ll be even more enemies and bosses later, which means plenty more ways to die, but hey, mutations are a thing.

Real player with 68.5 hrs in game

Beacon has a nice low-poly artsyle, a pretty good soundtrack, and interesting writing and ideas. It has some weird design choices regarding weapons and enemies, but is over-all rewarding, if not occasionally frustrating due to a few enemies.

The gameplay is pretty typical: you can use 2 guns, have 1 equipment, 1 consumable/held passive, a grenade type, and as many passive non-held items as you want. You can smack things and dodge-roll, too.

The big game idea is that, when you die, you use DNA pickups you collect from enemies and can “mutate” next run… Or you can do what I did and beat it without mutating, which is pretty doable. Mutations change how the character looks/acts/stats and how the character reacts to items and story elements.

Medievalien

Medievalien

IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Real-time combat. Action Roguelike. Medieval setting with alien technology and enemies. Fast-paced ARPG styled, ranged and skill based combat. Excellent range of alien enemies with different travel and attack types. Large arsenal of medieval and alien ranged weapons. Passives and skill power-ups instead of character levelling. Changeable level modifiers. Procedurally generated isometric maps. Unlockable hub trainers. Single-player only.

Real player with 33.3 hrs in game

Medievalien is a very pleasant action roguelike which combines the procedural generation of a classic dungeon crawler with the new-age feel of your favorite phone shoot ‘em ups like Archero. It’s easy to get into and play a run, and it’s not a big time commitment. It’s a game that’s constantly being added to in terms of bug fixes and new content. It helps that the developers are extremely receptive to feedback and the like. And while there are some bugs (which I expect in early access), they are few and far between. Most of them will not impact game play in any significant way.

The game has a lot of replayability even with a small amount of weapons and power-ups because the looping mechanic makes the levels more challenging. In a way, the player is being made to be actually stranded on the “raft boat” when a swarm of variety of enemies flood the looped levels. The difficulty bump between the base levels and loop 1 is pretty huge, but it is set to work out by the time the player gets to looped stages. Unlocking the costumes and daily mode were/are a fun part of the game which made playing the game greater. Overall, the game itself is really great, and it being free is kind of insane because I could see the game having a price tag between $1-10 as it is, honestly. Hope the developers make more!
