Poet Squad

Poet Squad

Poet Squad (تیم شاعر) is a real-time tactics roguelite focused on (highly kinetic) hand-to-hand fights. A Mortal X-Com’bat for short. It features a unique setting of Persian Cyberpunk.

Take control of a group of young poets — Persian cyber-ninjas. Break through ambushes and outposts of bandits, ghouls, auto-mechas and elite enforcers. Unravel the tangle of intrigues and bring your vision of the future of the United Sultanates!

Key Features:

  • Fighting game experience in tactical battles:

Uppercuts, air kicks, magnet grips and RED BARRELS — all in tactical slowmo

  • Roguelite character progression:

Lots of perks and weapons meant to be combined and used in teamwork.

  • Procedural generated encounters:

Everything is kinetic and/or destructible! Use the environment or it will be used against you.

  • Dramatic story of three friends:

Will they be able to find their own way and solve the problems of the post-war world?

Lucky me has the dubious honour of writing the first review for BattleGrounds: War, Tanks and Nukes.

BattleGrounds: War, Tanks and Nukes is a paid version of the free game, Battlegrounds: First Blast. It’s a minimalist 2D top down tower/soldier defense game where you must send your tanks against enemy tanks and defend your base with the single tower and various abilities you get.

As the screenshots show, the graphics here were phoned in. On a bad telephone line while driving through a tunnel. While the phone was turned off. It’s that bad. The level design is terrible, too, it’s barely possible to pass the first level. Next to no thought went into level design.

Bad North: Jotunn Edition

Bad North: Jotunn Edition

I’ve heard some negative criticism and some positives about the game and I really want to voice my opinion on this game because I feel like the devs have something really REALLY special here, it’s absolutely worth your time even if you may not get a lot of mileage out of it.

Bad North is a deliberately paced game broken up in to two segments.

  • The action phase of the game takes place on the many procedurally generated islands in the game, you choose which commanders to bring (this usually boils down to the same 4 commanders you’ve sunk all your coins in to, unless you’re going for a specific achievement) and then ships with various viking troops slowly sail towards the shores. There’s a big rock/paper/scissors element going on here where shields counter archers, archers counter unshielded units, and pikes counter… well everything without a bow lol. It’s really fun trying to defend all the buildings on each island. It’s worth noting, your mission on each island is merely surviving the onslaught of enemy troops. Keeping the buildings in tact is optional, although, you should strive to keep every building standing if you hope to get enough coin to upgrade all your units enough for the late game.

A delightful roguelite real time tactics game.

What I enjoy about this game:

  • Cute graphics and sound effect.

  • Remarkable details. See this wonderful article from Rock Paper Shotgun for how the devs design their little soldiers in this game.

  • Very friendly to newbies in RTT games like me. It has only three unit classes and seven enemy types. How each unit class/enemy/trait/item/skill functions are mostly intuitive and easy to understand after seeing it once or twice in real action. Also, you deploy your units on a grid-based map and they plan the route and fight automatically. And the game even slows down time when you select a unit to give you more reflex time. You can almost play it as a turn-based strategy game.

Deadnaut

Deadnaut

Deadnaut provides a lot of creepy atmosphere, fun and replayability.

When I bought Dreadnaut and entered the game, I didn’t expect much based on the trailers available. It seemed just like all those top-down squad RTS games, which there are hundreds of. It was only 10 euros, so I decided to jump it and test it out.

I immediately reached out for the character creation. I’ve always been one for creating my own party/character, since the game experience feels a lot more personal. The character creation has two minor bugs, which I did not realize were bugs until I read the forums for a tutorial on character creation. The bugs:

In one campaign your fighting off waves of fast moving xenomorphs, through the flurry of fast moving xeno’s you see one of your men get dragged away through a airlock. Yet in another campaign you may be contending with the possessed remains of a former crew driven insane by unknown artifacts, behemoths throwing your soldiers around as artifacts obscure your command and control with horrifying visions of death and torture.

Deadnaut’s is a game that wants to immerse you in its universe. Your hud looks akin to something from a WW2 submarine simulation and your control over your soldiers is sketchy at the best of times. There are a large amount of things to take into consideration with Deadnaut’s and many ways for those under your command to come to harm or die, this may be the one area the game faulters in. It is a real time tactical squad based game, essentially a rogue like.

RFM

RFM

It was all going so well.

One day the world is experiencing a golden age of technology, the next it’s forcibly merged with an alternate dimension. It happens.

Now there’s a new reality, a world between worlds: The Bast.

RFM is a roguelite tactics game where you can play, pause and plan. You are Morgan, dimension-diving merc, delving deeper and deeper into The Bast at the behest of the factions looking to exploit this new reality.

But you’re going to need help to survive in the depths. Help, and a whole lot of skill.

RFM combines the tactics of grid-based strategy with the thrills of an action game. Each level plays out in realtime, but you can pause to assess the battlefield, prep your attacks and plan your next move. Use mods and equipment to enhance your preferred style of play and overcome your foes.

Inspired by the Golden Age of Space and seventies retro-futurism, RFM’s cel-shaded art and unique atmosphere, set to an irresistibly catchy soundtrack, means diving into the unknown has never felt so stylish.

You’re not alone on your journey into The Bast. As a mercenary you’ll deal with close associates and vying factions: everyone wants a piece of this new reality. But going deeper means getting better, and you’ll have to create unlikely alliances to procure the equipment you need to dive deeper.

  • Unique tactical battle system combining real-time action and time-freezing strategy

  • Every dive is different: change your strategies on the fly to counter a dimension in flux.

  • A hyper-stylish retro-future set to a catchy original soundtrack

  • Discover the secrets of each world and work towards a mysterious final goal

That Role Playing

That Role Playing

While I do like a good throwback dungeon crawler, this game misses the mark on several levels. 1. There is no character progression, no equipment upgrades, etc. All you get is health and shields (which in the end are essentially the same thing) 2. The game starts out difficult, but should progress from easy (to get you used to the developers style) and get harder. 3. The integration of reverse polish notation math questions in order to progress in the game is downright whack.

What I did like were the sound effects, some made me laugh. The general concept is good but needs to fix/add what I posted above. You can leave the graphics as is, I like the 1980’s Ultima-ish style.

Great game allowed me to remember very good moments. It seems easy but it actually very tricky. And I learned a new word. I recommend everyone to try it!

Okhlos: Omega

This is indeed a pretty fun game when it comes down to its core gameplay. I’m not sure about the price tag associated with this but will gladly gives this an enthusiastic thumbs up if can pick this game up for 10 bucks or less.

The best thing about this game is that it’s very east to pick up and play. There really isn’t much to it other than running around and picking up citizens along the way to add to your mob and wreck every thing and every one that stands in your way.

It isn’t all about just running around though. There are times in which you have to defend against certain types of attacks an enemy makes and when to rally the mob together to avoid a trap or hazard.

Probably best described as a mob-handed, roguelite brawler you lead a group of disgruntled Greeks across the ancient world to the gates of Mount Olympus. Your goal - to destroy all the gods. But rather than taking the old Kratos, God of War approach you don’t actually get you hands dirty. Instead you get your horde of fighters, slaves and citizens to do all the head bashing for you. Sending them chasing after your target reticle in something akin to a twin-stick rampage of destruction.
