Overhaul

Overhaul

Overhaul is a puzzle rogue-like dungeon crawler that combines fast-paced action, quick logical thinking and rich systemic gameplay.

As Ikalee, venture deep into the abandoned Power Plant to bring the power back to your village. A place that has now been taken over by hostile and mysterious life forms.

#### Game Rules

Each room of the Power Plant is built around a grid puzzle similar to Sudoku. The puzzle is solved when the grid is filled with numbers and the same number can only be placed once on the same row and column. But unlike Sudoku, some cells indicate superiority over another cell, which acts as a clue to help solve the grid faster.

Solving the puzzle is your objective, it will grant you power ups, resources and unlockables. But the Power Plant’s new hosts will challenge your ability to think fast. You’ll have to get rid of hostile entities, dodge incoming attacks and use your items' abilities to get to the Core!

#### Game Features

  • Logic-based Sudoku-like puzzles mixed with fast-paced top down action for a unique experience.

  • Pick up enemies, carry objects and outsmart the most vicious of situations!

  • A hand-crafted rogue-like experience. Hundreds of rooms, each tailor-made to bring new challenges!

  • A rich cast of mysterious entities. Experiment and learn how they can interact with one another and take advantage of it! Some will try to take you down, others hide powerful secrets.

  • Carve your own path through the Power Plant. Each room is different, pick a difficult one for better rewards or an easier one if you want a smoother ride.

  • Each completed room will generate power. Use it to unlock new content and grow permanently stronger or save it to open up alternate paths and supports.

  • Track down secrets and breath life back into the Hub. The more you engage with the game, the more beautiful the Hub becomes! (You may even get some company who knows)

  • A carefully composed score that matches with your progression. From moody melancholic ambiance to blood-pumping melodies!

Roundguard

Full disclosure: I beta tested this game a lot because it’s THAT fun. Day 1 purchase for me.

TL;DR:

  • Peggle + Rogue-like + dungeon crawler

  • Fun, highly addictive gameplay

  • Super charming and endearing aesthetic

  • Delicious mix of adrenaline wrapped in a cocoon of accessible, easy controls

  • Victory music feels like a dance party in your heart

Longer notes:

This game is freaking awesome. I’ve sunk hours into it! It’s so easy to pick up and play. I can get satisfying sessions out of sneaking 15 minutes or going for 1.5 hours straight. It’s Peggle, but with monsters you have to defeat. And you get to use skills mid-turn after you’ve fired your shot. The loot and upgrades are interesting and fun to engage with, and that’s coming from someone who usually thinks of loot management or skill comparison as cumbersome. It’s in the goldilocks zone of loot mechanics.

This is it, folks! The next casual game you’ve been waiting for. It’s like Peggle and Diablo/Torchlight had a baby, and Slay the Spire came over to babysit. It’s a Peggle/rogue-like, but instead of a shiny ball, YOU’RE a “round guard” - a literal spherical hero bouncing your colorful and humorous way through three acts of a dungeon(crawl) to the big baddie at the end. You bounce just like a Peggle ball, but you also smash health and mana potions, level up your hero, upgrade your gear, obtain rare relics, throw on spell-imbued trinkets, and honestly, in general, have a blast! MAN, I love this game! It’s gorgeous, completely replayable, and it has that “just one more round” quality you so desire in a game such as this. I mean, honestly, highlights:

Dungelot: Shattered Lands

Dungelot: Shattered Lands

Target Audience: Puzzle players who want something pleasing to look at….but do it on IOS in that case.

Summary:

A game that just doesn’t do the platform justice. There’s an alternate puzzle experience here that does make some sense with comparisons to minesweeper, as enemies need to be avoided more then they needed to be hit over the head with the hammer of justice. Which at first works, as when the game breaks down to “how do I get to the key without taking damage”, it works. But it can’t keep it up, as there’s not enough variety to keep the interest over a period of time, and the lack of reasons to actually engage the enemy means that things get boring quickly. With games like Runestone Keeper offering more content at the same price, it’s hard to justify, especially when the IOS version is only 4 bucks, and the Steam version isn’t exactly programmed to take advantage of the platform. Only a few skills, a few heroes, and where there is variety, it’s not necessarily used in the best of ways. Honestly, the game can turn into a grind.

I am enjoying this game, and I don’t regret purchasing it. I can’t recommend it though in its current state.

First the good. The art style is fantastic. From the characters to the bosses to the tiles everything is very detailed and beautiful. Animations are very well done. The level of challenge seems decently balanced. You can make choices that really hinder your progress or that make the game relatively easy. It’s not too difficult but not too easy for the average player.

The bad, however, heavily outweighs the good. Itemization feels very unbalanced. One of the first unlockable weapons has such powerful abilities that it will carry you through the entire game. Halving damage and parrying are infinitely more powerful than a 1 in 20 chance of a modest effect, especially when your damage is tied more to your character itself than the weapon’s damage. Add the fact that the later weapons are two-handed, which incurs an accuracy penalty and sacrifices the ability to use shields, and they are all but worthless. Armor is similar. You can fight through the most difficult dungeons to obtain character specific armor that once again gives modest effects, only to discover the more easily obtainable armor is superior. This could all change if proc chances were much higher, but as it stands be prepared for let downs on discovering new items.

I really liked this game! I like the concept, and the art style. It really fun! With really fun character. I do recommend this game, even though it bit confusing at first, I enjoyed it. The music is calm, and good too.

Jumps you right in without instruction. Text on menu is blurry, buttons are off at points. Definitely takes a little bit to understand the concept of the game and to get into the actual gameplay. Enjoyed the music and art style however, with more polish and refining, could be a great game!
