You run fast, shoot baddies in the face, get an adrenaline rush from the music, and don’t know what emotion to feel or if the emotion needed to fully enjoy this experience even exists. Just like me when McDonald’s won’t let me bathe my naked body in the sods dispenser.

Well, finally completed the game so i assume that makes me creditable for a review.

This game is amazing. Absolutely Amazing. When you first play it, you have no idea where to go and the bright colors distort your eyes. As you play, you get more used to the game and layout, speeding through levels that you struggled with at the beginning. Going through the levels themselves is a huge adrenaline rush due to how fun and fast paced this game is. Would most definitely recommend it to any other adrenaline junkies like me. 10/10 Indie GOTY for me.

If you find the background distracting, turning off all the graphics will fix that issue.

Each run takes about an hour and a half. The difficulty I would rate 3/5, so if you are skilled at all with roguelikes it will probably take you only 2 to 3 attempts to beat the game.

Nice change of pace, good game!

IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT TO EXPECT: More Roguelite than Roguelike. Difficult, very challenging. Top-down, action shooter. Plain 2D maps. Basic visuals and sound. Rudimentary gameplay. Limited, unvaried content. Designed for replayability. God and drug references themes. Enjoyable in short bursts. Single-player only.

ACHIEVEMENTS: VARIED. MOSTLY ORGANIC. SOME SKILL-BASED.

STATUS: JUST RELEASED.

WHO FOR/WHEN TO BUY: Only if you know what you are getting. I would wait for a good sale.

The game takes place during WWII and starts with an intro, showing us our main protagonist who was an american pastor. He explains us how they forced him to join the army and how one day, after discovering that “they” were hiding drugs,he decided to try them on himself. This resulted in hearing the God’s voice.God told him to kill everybody…although our protagonist wasn’t so sure about that, then God offered him the ultimate gift to convince him….The “Wh*re of Babylon”!Who could have resisted on that?

METALLIC CHILD

METALLIC CHILD

Metallic Child starts us off in the aftermath of an AI rebellion, where the protagonist android (Rona), needs our help to stop a spaceship on a collision course with Earth. She was damaged from trying to stop the rogue robots herself, so she needs someone who can control her directly via remote uplink. You happen to be her first contact, and thus her mission becomes your mission.

You see, in this game, we may be controlling Rona, but we are playing as ourselves, as a person. Rona will be talking to us directly throughout the entire game. This is a subtle but distinct shift in perspective that - when done right - makes the connection a lot more personal. It’s a premise that’s only possible in video games, but sadly I don’t see it used all that often outside of visual novels. Some of the world-building is done this way. For example, when Rona explains how she consumes a core, you could ask her what it tastes like. She’ll give you a funny look and say that it tastes like raw eggs XD.

Normally, I’d play a bit more before reviewing a game but after 2 hours I’ve beaten the first stage and have a pretty solid opinion of the game. I’ll update this review once I beat the game but, for now, some pros and cons…

The Good:

This is a fantastic Mega Man meets rogue-lite, except replace Mega Man’s lemon dispenser with melee weapons. At the hub you choose a themed stage and boss, each stage has multiple levels and when you beat the boss, you get a themed ability based on the boss’s abilities.

A PAINTING FOR CRAZINESS

The Surrealist Artist Ardois-Bonnot presented his painting called Dream Landscape in the Paris Spring Salon of 1926. The moment the painting was uncovered, it caused a sudden riot among the public, and people screamed and ran all over the place. Soon after the exhibition, Ardois-Bonnot fell into a strange deep sleep from which no one could wake him up. Rumors abound that shortly before this attack of ‘sleeping sickness’, he was at the verge of completion of his greatest masterpiece which would change the world.

6 DIFFERENT CHARACTERS

This time, you will have access to 6 different playable characters, old and new, each one with a different playstyle. The Detective, the Witch, and the Professor from the first part, which continue their fight against the Great Old Ones, and the Medium, the Veteran, and the Alienist who join the group of adventurers.

Heavy Bullets

Heavy Bullets

Surprised that given the Rogue-Lite craze in indie games this title isn’t more talked about, especially after being played and promoted by many popular individuals.

Is a low poly FPS with an abstract but appealing visual style, the neon colors have a good contrast so they never feel like an eyesore, and the style has a neat early 3D vibe, the sound design having a glitchy vibe to it.

The gameplay reminds me of the original Wolfestein 3D; there’s no jumping, you walk through semi Labyrinthic corridors killing enemies and finding secrets, but that’s where the similarities end. The random generation is really good; I never encountered myself stuck or in unfair situations that can’t be solved by your own skill. It has some heart pounding moments which makes this game memorable at times, but going through random adversity never gets old.

“Welcome to High Rise Hunting Grounds: A Safe Place to Kill”

- You’re in for an adventure

Heavy Bullets has been haunting me rather successfully since 2015, but since I recently beat the new game that the creator had time to make in the interim, I decided to go back and smother this helpless baby once and for all.

It’s a roguelite. Lite because it doesn’t match some arbitrary criteria that some people, who are very mad that the Nethack wiki exists, came up with, but I’d be attempt to slot it under there anyway. All the roguelike elements, brimming on the surface like fecal matter at a water processing plant alongside Action-Adventure and RPG elements, just aren’t very good. They’re about as bad as that analogy.

Straimium Immortaly

Straimium Immortaly

If you like roguelikes that are done in a room-to-room format like Rogue Legacy or Pixel.Loot.Again, you should enjoy this.

If you liked Straima, you should enjoy this.

If you look at the video above and are amused or curious about the art style, you should enjoy this. The sound style is totally my thing too.

If you are looking for a hardcore roguelike, maybe give this one a pass. Unless more is added, the game isn’t too difficult to complete, and while there are unlockables, there aren’t all that many, and even fewer that significantly change the gameplay.

This was what I was looking for for so long… It turns out I’ve found my niche. Crazy s*** that makes no sense.

You would know if you would like this game just by looking at it. If the visuals seem… offputting, but the gameplay/tags tell you you want it, you should still get it.

In this game you will find:

  • A design choice that makes you swear you were high

  • Aliens that talk… well, not neccessarily “cute”, but in their own way. Whatever this item description means to you: “Worky Banga: Useable to magically changely item levely.”
