Awesome game, plays sorta like a scifi Binding of Isaac, really cool, high difficulty curve at the start.

Unique about this game - Weapons have infinite ammo, but can overheat, in order to reduce heat you need to jump and dash, sort of a “Move or Die” type mechanic which keeps things fast paced. Really awesome Idea, and something that makes it stand out amongst other games of the genre.

Although marketed as a story driven game, what first excited me about Gunnhildr was when I read it was a first-person shooter rogue-lite, something I’d never seen executed well but certainly something I’d love to see executed well. Unfortunately, Gunnhildr doesn’t quite deliver… yet.

Story

Where Gunnhildr does deliver is the story, which is no surprise when the game is marketed as a “narrative shooter”. The story is arguable the most polished part of the game, there is a lot of interesting lore to unravel about Norse gods and the world of Gunnhildr. However, it’s how the game tells the story that is an issue. It is a complete overload of information. The number one rule of story telling is “show don’t tell”, Gunnhildr shows nothing and tells a lot.

(Review was updated on Dec 2021) I’ve spent many hours alpha-testing this game and decided to buy it on release day. Here are my thoughts so far, a list of positive and negative elements:

The good stuff:

  • Uniquely witty main character.

  • Good variety of unlockable skills and lootable guns, be it primaries or secondaries.

  • The setting: a terribly haunted mansion property set in the 1910’s - 1920’s.

  • The Padre’s voice actor probably smoked 10 cigars and drank too much whiskey. Fantastic.

There’s a brand-new Roguelike indie title on the streets; One Shell Straight to Hell. One Shell Straight to Hell lets the player experience the best of two worlds with its well-put-together Roguelike dungeon-crawling gameplay with a touch of base defense elements mixed in.



At first glance, the game seems to be simple enough with its Procedural Generation World. But as you cross the first stage after finishing a base defense wave, the game becomes something much more.

I think it is a good game, with lot of potential. I had fun playing it, but you really notice, that its early, early acces. Here are some Ideas for the game:

Something like a doppel jump, or a dash, for mobilite.

A shop.

Varios items, like gold, health, munition,…

All in all, i had fun playing the game, and i can suggest everyone to play it.

ok, hear me out.

this game is an amazing concept, and it's fun, but it's not out yet :(

but, seriously, cinnamancer studios (not like your going to read this) please buff the shotgun! in it's current state it might as well be a melee weapon, that doesn't register half the time, but a melee weapon would be great when you're out of ammo (wink wink nudge nudge). and also maybe add light to guns when they shoot? not a necessity, just a suggestion. and maybe add recoil to guns, that knocks your character back? maybe you can even hover/glide with the recoil? again, all of these are just suggestions, but please, if you do anything BUFF. THE. SHOTGUN,

You have a distinctive ability to switch between the realms of YIN and YANG:



*   YIN represents the ruins of the mausoleum as you’ve found it - where the warriors are just dusty terracotta figures and the walls are dead and empty. It embodies darkness, solitude, tranquility and isolation. It's the domain of logical thinking, in which you can take your time to devise your strategy as well as prepare and shift your surroundings – channel your energy to create walls, activate mechanisms or summon the power of the elements.

*   YANG, on the other hand, represents the afterlife of the Emperor Qin. In this dimension the spirits are fully awakened and ready to protect the tomb with all their might. It’s the realm of light, rush, disorder and life. In this reality you’ll have to focus on your physical skill while executing the strategy you have prepared. You will have to be as swift as the wind, running, dashing and leaping forward to avoid enemy attacks or collect the sources for YIN.



The game works as a pendulum and finds equilibrium through the endless loop of change between both dimensions.
