Crawl

One of the best local multiplayer games ever made. My friends and I have played this almost every week without fail since launch - it’s that damn good. When we meet new people who claim they’re into games, we vet them on this and see if they have fun or can appreciate the depth of game mechanics. We love this game because there’s nothing like sitting shoulder to shoulder with a pal and howling with rage at a stolen kill, laughter at a horde of slimes causing a human to suddenly play a Shmup, or roars of hype when a close bossfight comes down to the wire. My short recommendation for this game is BUY IT. But now let’s get to why you should.

Oh man. Where do I begin with this game? There’s so much done right about this game that it’s very quickly becoming one of my favourite rougelikes. Let’s just dive right into the dungeon and start chopping off the pros and cons of this insanely unique and fast-paced competitive Gauntlet-inspired roguelike.

Pros:

+Fast paced couch competition. The game is super quick to pick up and just as wasy to learn, utilizing only the movement directions and two buttons.

+Most unique idea for a rogulike in a long time. The fact that AI or other friends control your ENTIRE JOURNEY is so fresh and innovative that I honestly can’t think of a game to compare it to.

Bombslinger

Bombslinger

Probably the closest to a legitimate Bomberman experience you’ll get to on PC, not just Steam, outside of emulation, and far more party-ready. The multiplayer is solid, and you can play online via Parsec (which I recommend if you’ve got a good connection for just about any local-multiplayer game).

The single-player is fun and has all the highs and lows of any other rogue-like game. Other than a few very rare bugs that can occur (especially frustrating toward the end of a very powerful run), the game runs very smoothly and without issues on a large variety of hardware. The bosses are extremely tough when starting, but are fairly predictable, and as a result this particular game is more consistent than most rogue-likes. The item variety adds a fair bit of strategy to the game, and it’s fun messing with different builds to find either incredibly powerful builds that will allow for an easy run or succeed-or-suck builds that are a huge gamble with the possibility of quick death or deft victories. I’ve put in a lot of runs on this game and it’s an excellent time killer with endless opportunities for fun during multiplayer. My only wish is that multiplayer would get more options for customization going forward. Other than that, the game is fairly flawless, and delivers on its promises excellently for both the experienced rogue-player and newcomers alike.

Pros:

  • overall the game is fun

  • nice art style

  • different builds are possible

  • some degree of replayability(different bosses, unlockable starting items, levels layouts randomly generated each playthrough)

  • not a lot of bomberman-like games out there

Cons:

  • the game starts slow. Your avatar moves slow, has one bomb with one title blast radius. I almost dropped the game at first, but struggled through the first couple of runs and luckily unlocked a couple of items which made the game less tedious

Battle Planet - Judgement Day

Battle Planet - Judgement Day

Honestly feels like I ripped the developers off by buying this on sale, it is that fucking amazing!

I’m a huge twin stick shooter (top down shooter) guy. They’re likely my favorite genre over FPS. I’ve sunk countless hours into a whole slew of these style of games, and this game, right out of the gate, has me fucking hooked. To give you an idea, I’m sick asf right now with tonsillitis and was due to have some medication a few hours ago, but this game has an energy surge about it that I doubt you’d even get if you were to unzip and ram it through the monitor! Look Ma, no meds while I’m playing this incredibly crafted gem of a game. It honestly feels that fucking splendid that I’m lost for words. It’s everything I’ve wanted in a top down shooter. It has pizzazz that makes the game play just perfectly while being in your face hectic and hard. If I ever get old enough to need Viagra, I’ll just load up this game up and look Ma, no hands! :P

Real player with 12.4 hrs in game

It’s hard for me to give this a Thumb’s Down because even though it is fairly tight and competently made, it is ultimately a boring game with a very flat experience overall.

You start with a heavily-neutered set of powers and skills and as you proceed through the arenas (little planets), you gather chips which you may use for permanent upgrades. Every upgrade is MORE SOMETHING. So your basic gun sucks, and then you grind away to get upgrades to it’s damage. Your jetpack sucks, and you grind away to get speed/fuel upgrades. Your speed is slow, and you grind to get speed upgrades. The core game does not have enough depth to keep a player interested enough to keep doing this and make it feel worthwhile. You’re basically repeating the same dull arenas over and again with very little to keep you interested.

Earth Overclocked

Earth Overclocked

Surprisingly nice and addictive game in the genre that I don’t usually like. Earth Overclocked is yet another one of those cheap indie real-time permadeath rogue-like games that you can often find in bundles and most of which suck very hard. For many reasons. Those are usually way too poor, way too unpolished, or something like that. Up to the point where they’re half-broken games that kill you faster than you can understand what’s going on and what you should do. For example, not so long ago I suffered through a game called Vampire of the Sands. The idea itself wasn’t that bad, but the experience itself… it was extremely unpleasant.

Real player with 8.0 hrs in game

Actually, not bad, but with some problems.

I liked how quick the runs are. You are forced to finish your run in 20 minutes, but you can find some items which can extend your timer, so there is no need to stress out about the timer, especially on the first difficulty. I finished my first run after 100 minutes of playtime and after that I could fairly easily finish the game on every second try. My record was 12 minutes and 4 seconds.

There are a lot of weapons to find and play with, but the downside is - all of them have a durability stat, so after some time they just break and you are left with nothing. So switching weapons is essential and a big part of the game’s core difficulty.

Monsters and Monocles

Monsters and Monocles

200 character summary

Monsters and Monocles is a great rogue lite twin stick shooter with a lot of weapons, items, different biomes and random generated floors. You can play the game with up to 4 players locally or online.

Story & Characters 7/10

The game starts with a small intro without dialogue, so this is my intepretation of it, There is some Wizard? and when he opens a pot ghosts fly out and strange phenomenom happen. Then the 4 playable characters read about it in the news and decide they are the ones to fix it. I think the drawings are very nice, but how does that wizards mansion explain the forest, tomb or city, And how does it explain the Dog with a Gun? You do collect fragments every time you kill a book, 4 fragments create a page which tells a bit about the story, But they are cryptic at best. I hope they will put in a bit more lore, a bit more mystery to uncover.

Player profile: I’ve played a few hours worth of solo adventure. I use keyboard/mouse controls.

Overall: I really like the Gauntlet-style play, the variety of enemies and the procedurally generated levels. Despite a number of shortcomings (expected for early-access stuff), I would totally recommend this game for anyone in the mood for an arcade style dungeon shoot-em-up.

Noteable things I appreciated:

  • The variety of enemies is great. I had expected variations on a theme across the “worlds,” but was happy to encounter totally different concepts.

The Crackpet Show

The Crackpet Show

Are you ready to get famous? If so, grab your gun and join the most violent TV show in the history of violent TV shows! Participants will have to shoot, smash and rip through hundreds of enemies on their way to victory!

Don’t be discouraged by THE GIANT F*ING BOSSES that are more than capable of turning your innards outwards – just grab the best perks and weapons along the way. Make your gun spew molten lava all over the floor, turn yourself into a berserker, and let your bullets bounce between enemies! All these things stack, so you have every opportunity to turn your furry warrior into a raging death machine.

You’ll still die, though. That’s just how life is, even for those who wield a rail gun. But who cares about death when your audience loves YOU? Unlike real life, here you can make good use of the likes you receive.

Use your new-found fame to help upgrade every item and every perk to deal even more damage when you head out again. Oh, don’t worry about getting bored: every episode of the show is randomized so you’ll never have the same run twice in-a-row.

And, when you are completely done with show business, invite your friends and party-up with co-op mode with up to four players! Play smart and synergize with the team or bash their teeth in when they will try to steal your power-ups: every dirty trick in the book is valid, and every strategy works as long as you are having fun.

So, are you ready to sign the contract?

Rogue-lite Shoot’em-up

There are tons of enemies, dozens of weapons, lots of perks and items, randomized drop and map layouts, as well as carnivorous bosses for you to test your ability to beat the game with in-game items

Crawlers and Brawlers

Crawlers and Brawlers

if I had to compare this to other games, I would say it’s like Nestalgia and Enter the Gungeon had a baby (in terms of like, aesthetic, loot, etc - oh, but minus the infantile developer running Nestalgia).

I wish there were more classes (with more skills - the skill “trees” are relatively restrictive but pretty straightforward and allow enough points for customization to feel like the character is somewhat yours) and more content (dungeoneering, and boss battles like the one vs lord wellington are fun); but, overall I am having a lot of fun playing - just wish there was more of everything. I think the addition of pvp in the game was somewhat pointless as the combat is so simplistic and the playerbase isn’t there for it obviously (will never get the 1000 players killed achievement… actually, maybe not even the minimum version of the pvp achievement, lol) - I felt like this was a step in the wrong direction and instead more pve content should have been included because that is where the game shines.

Real player with 36.6 hrs in game

It’s a game you play for a while, then you beat it and you won’t go back to it unless you’re an achievement hunter.

The Mage class is far and away the best class. Usually mages suffer from the issue of being squishy and easily wrecked, but in this game stats are affected solely by items. They will affect each class the same way, so this completely mitigates the whole “squishy mage” archetype right there. Now, this is a huge issue because every class has 4 attacks: A basic attack you will spend the bulk of your time on, and three situational abilities that take MP to use that are more powerful, but are limited by of course your MP (which does regenerate quite quickly.)
