Darkened Glory

Darkened Glory

First and foremost you have to keep in mind that this game is in the alpha version / early access, and it could be changed by the time it is a final product. The mechanics of the game are similar to a Souls style games, it’s not yet polished but it has the basics. It currently just has an Arena for PvP, but there will be Singleplayer / CO-OP campaign too in the future. It has a distinct Slavic / European flair to it, which i personally very like. The recent updated came along with level editor which is a nice feature. Optimization is usually really good with drops (drops occur from the fire animations, devs are aware of it and will fix it eventually), i have a 1060 6gb, i7, 16gb ram and i am in the 100-144fps range. Final verdict: buy the game if you want to support it’s development, it’s unpolished currently, but looking at how much the game is updated, a year from now the game will be in a completely different state, i can only assume it’s going to be in a better state!

Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition

Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition

Nongunz at first just looks like your everyday shooty-platformer-roguelike but… it does very interesting and unique things that change the usual dynamics for these games, e.g. it uses some kind of idle economy that lets you buy stuff before starting a run based on the amount of prisoners you have liberated on previous attempts or it lets you bail out in the middle of a run while keeping the items you’ve found so you can start over with them, encouraging farming…

It gets weirder though and the more you look at it the weirder stuff you are going to find, especially since it’s intentionally very obscure and it takes time to decypher some of the stuff that is going on. I think it’s definitely worth a shot if someone is interested in how this kind of mash-up can affect a pretty known genre like the roguelike and it definitely becomes its own thing with these additions. I enjoyed it a lot.

Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition released recently, and I wanted to post a positive review about it. I dont actually have much more to say other than I feel like this version is more fine tuned than the original in a few different ways. The game seems at least a little bit more accessible, even if this new version does have a bit more bugs than the original release.

The things id like to point out specifically in why I like the game are mostly style choices, sound and visual design seemed dark and unique at the time, and very minimal game systems in play made for a unique experience for this indie title when it first released years ago.

Our Darker Purpose

Our Darker Purpose

This review will hopefully bust the myth that Our Darker Purpose is a cheap copy of Binding of Isaac:

This game deserves so much more attention! I can’t think of many reasons why anyone would dislike it, except maybe its difficulty. One thing that might be putting people off is the game’s seeming similarity to Binding of Isaac, which is understandable, but very superficial. I played the hell out of Binding of Isaac. I finished both the original and the remake with all their DLCs on 100%. It’s got a very special place in my heart. But I would never say Our Darker Purpose is a cheap copy of it. It’s very much a game of its own. Besides belonging in the same game category as Isaac, it’s not affected or derived from it in any way. There are indie games out there that downright copy Isaac and use the word ‘homage’ as an excuse for their lack of creativity.

An evil version of the wayside school looms in a vast depressing void where you the player will guide a seemingly innocent fire ball girl named Cordy, who recently had all her friends murdered when all the adults vanished, through a school filled with psychopathic orphanage/boarding school students up an irrational amount of floors to seek answers from the entity known as the administrators. Cordy is destined to die many times, but still mysteriously can restart her journey a bit differently every death afterwards. In the afterlife you can take classes which if equipped give different abilities to help you on your journey.

Rogue Lords

Rogue Lords

I really enjoyed Rogue Lords, and I decided to write this review as I have a slightly different take from the others I read.

It took me ~40 hours to finish all chapters, and I always played with the same team (the starters: Dracula “the Support”, the Headless Horseman “the Tank”, Bloody Mary “the DPS”). I think I had a total of two game overs, one at the second or third chapter, and one at the second-to-last (but see below).

I read several reviews mentioning that the game is hard and RNG can hit hard. I think they are not wrong, but I did not find it THAT hard: I think it’s more a matter of COMPLEXITY. Damage already starts in the double digits, and it is not unusual towards the end of the game to hit for 30-50 (multiple times). With 3 characters on your side and 1-3 characters on the other side, you can also have several status effects in play at the same time (probably the maximum I’ve seen is ~20). You accumulate this with relic effects and maybe even battle effects, and suddenly it becomes really easy to make a fatal mistake. I remember in one boss battle I accidentally made the Headless Horseman use an attack that steals HP and SP, while he was under the effect of a Zombie debuff (healing received becomes damage), so instead of healing him I made him Vulnerable with 0 HP and 0 SP. Fun times.

Note that while I am giving this a thumbs up, there are definite issues that sour the experience (that I will go into more detail over below). Honestly, this rating should be 3/5, 6/10, or a neutral but we don’t have those options.

Long story short:

Rogue Lords is a fun roguelike very much like Slay the Spire, but not being a rip off in the slightest. It has a unique cheating mechanic and is pretty difficult while also having balance issues and run destroying bug. The concept is unique, fresh, and fun, but the gameplay could use some retuning and class balancing.

Akinofa

Akinofa

Decent old school shoot-em-up. This is not “bullet hell”.

Collect gold as you progress so when you die you can spend it for upgrades.

The upgrades save as you play, so the more you grind for gold, the more upgrades you can earn and make yourself stronger.

Achievements are easy to collect, although once you have 13/13 and steam recognises you have 13/13 it still does not count the game as completed, even though it says it is completed.

The game does not show up as completed nor does it show in “games” list on profile.

Gunmetal Arcadia

Gunmetal Arcadia

I’ll try to keep this short. As of this review, I’ve put over 60 hours into Gunmetal Arcadia. Its combat system is clearly inspired by Zelda II for the NES, and I happened to like that game a lot. Let me be clear, though: the game’s combat isn’t nearly as deep as Zelda II, but I still quite enjoyed it. You can even get an item that allows you to stab down in mid-air, allowing you to basically pogo on enemies.

The game itself is procedurally generated across four chapters. You cannot save and quit, so you’ll have to complete a game in one shot. Fortunately, this can be done in less than an hour, but I would have appreciated the ability to suspend my game like in FTL or The Binding of Isaac Rebirth.

J. Kyle Pittman’s “Gunmetal Arcadia” is his personal love-letter - by his own admission - to both “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link” and “Faxanadu”; with the combat mechanics being largely inspired by the former, and the Graphics by the latter (with him furthermore rigidly adhering to actual NES graphical limitations). This is then furthermore coupled with an enhanced version of his CRT Simulation technology, of which an earlier version was previously witnessed in “Super Win the Game”.

However - while the game looks great, and plays great - the most interesting aspect is the game’s Legacy System, and how it plays into Gunmetal Arcadia’s Roguelite elements. Whereas most Roguelike games expect winning to be an ephemeral goal, only reached after tons of hours of gameplay, Gunmetal Arcadia can easily be won (assuming you play well, and aren’t completely screwed over on your early upgrade chances). Instead of asking you to try forever to finish just once, completing Gunmetal Arcadia actually causes changes - both subtle, and sometimes massive - to occur on later sessions. Even though you succeeded - or sometimes failed - to clean out one particular Unmade Hive, there’s still the next mission to clear out that next Hive (which is effectively your next session).

Sentinel: Cursed Knight

Sentinel: Cursed Knight

I like it, different with lots of potential. The inventory system has an important effect on the attributes that allows a classless system and more on the go choice for the player. Health regenerates in a manner that doesn’t make the game too easy, but definitely as a subtle benefit when out of combat. The developer is very open and responsive to input and suggestions and I feel like this is going to be something great. Super Grave Snatchers

Super Grave Snatchers

Raise the dead. Kill people. Raise them, too.

There are also spells like fireballs and soul tornadoes, if you don’t want your minions to have all of the fun.

Campaign is not long, but there’s a sandbox mode and a survival mode that you can unlock, also.

Real player with 12.6 hrs in game

Super Grave Snatchers is a short, beautifully retro, necromantically witty and very engaging game.

The controls are simple enough, and fairly intuitive. On higher difficulties, the length of the game makes the creative permadeath fun rather than a chore (I recommend at least 2 Cheat Death items, because you basically have 1 HP). On lower difficulties, well, it’s a blast to just run around necromant-ing everything in sight. :D

As for the musical score - ::chef’s kiss::
