This game has incredible movement with a super fun momentum based physics system and I absolutely love it. It has been incredibly satisfying to improve at this game and experiment with all the various items and techniques as well as game modes. The base game is not overly difficult so it’s fairly easy to get in to and there are quite a few compelling alternate game modes.

I give this game a huge recommend and I believe it deserves way more attention than what it has gotten. If you are into movement games, roguelites or platformers of any kind creatorcrate highly worth checking out.

West of Dead

West of Dead

I personally love this game, but it’s a difficult sell in some regards.

It’s the kind of game indie games have needed since FTL: something that takes the mechanics of a beloved game genre, encases them in a creative and appealing setting with a killer soundtrack, and provides a familiar but unique experience to players across generations. It’s got a great gameplay loop, satisfying kills, and plenty of challenge. However, it’s let down by some odd (but rare for me, anyway) bugs, too many useless “dead-end” weapon unlocks, and a bad difficulty curve caused mostly by overinflated health values.

A Flawed Gem

West Of Dead is a roguelite shooter. Players take on the role of a nameless flaming-skull cowboy, fighting through hordes of enemies in order to recover his memories, his true identity, and a way out of this grim Purgatory. This game is easily one of the unique entries in the genre in terms of combat. The flow of gameplay offers a different approach to the speedy, combat-heavy peers. However, outside of gameplay, the game feels flawed. Many inconveniences and technical issues can easily push the players away from it. The game as a whole is functional and playable, mind you. I just have a feeling that this game should be advertised as an almost-finished-early-access product because of the lack of polishing. Still, I would recommend West Of Dead since it provides ample enjoyment to play through.

like Celery Emblem’s other games, this one’s completely insane. sort of like how Primus made each album sound more like the negative feedback from the last one, many of the levels are based around something people tend not to like in platformers, such as upside down controls, ice physics, auto-scrollers, etc. occasionally the rogue level generation will spit some areas out that take a really long time to get through with no challenge.

but that all contributes to the magic of it. the art and the music and everything is so off the wall surreal and the level design almost feels like a parody of video games and it builds to this overwhelming, eerie atmosphere. ONLY Celery Emblem could have made this game and i think it’s really special.

Extremely difficult but great visuals and music, super punishing but surprisingly fair, expect to replay things a lot as you get better.

Review

Game is pretty dang fun I love the art style and it has a plethora of fun the dialogue can be pretty entertaining as flawed as it is. The art style is pretty cool I definitely enjoyed killing waves of enemies I wish the xp did more than just give you a special attack mode which is hardly noticeable. There’s a ton of spelling mistakes and there’s a random voice that pops up the character portraits glitch as well. Game is beatable but there are glitches the second stage with the roots there’s one room if you enter it from the wrong angle you can’t see the torches to light them.. Each stage leading up to the boss has it’s own mechanics and they’re pretty dope. The game can be frustrating but it was fun for the price.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this game at first, but after playing through quite a few times I found it to be really fun, and played a few more times after that well after I should have gone to bed. With each game over I have this need to keep trying again and each time I get more efficient and I survive a little bit more (or just die to my stupid mistakes like forgetting to reroute enough power to my lasers, wondering why some space monster isn’t dying already and take hull damage)

I enjoyed the game a lot. It’s a frantic mess of running around trying to fix things as they break, getting out in the nick of time, and just generally having to work with what you’ve got. The upgrade points are quite scarce, so it’s really easy to become boxed into a corner because you ran out of points to use for repairs. It’s really satisfying to be able to keep the hunk of junk working nicely. The narrative is also well-done even though there isn’t much of it.

I have a fair number of complaints, in no particular order.
