Gospel of Abaddon

Gospel of Abaddon

IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT TO EXPECT: More Roguelite than Roguelike. Difficult, very challenging. Top-down, action shooter. Plain 2D maps. Basic visuals and sound. Rudimentary gameplay. Limited, unvaried content. Designed for replayability. God and drug references themes. Enjoyable in short bursts. Single-player only.

ACHIEVEMENTS: VARIED. MOSTLY ORGANIC. SOME SKILL-BASED.

STATUS: JUST RELEASED.

WHO FOR/WHEN TO BUY: Only if you know what you are getting. I would wait for a good sale.

The game takes place during WWII and starts with an intro, showing us our main protagonist who was an american pastor. He explains us how they forced him to join the army and how one day, after discovering that “they” were hiding drugs,he decided to try them on himself. This resulted in hearing the God’s voice.God told him to kill everybody…although our protagonist wasn’t so sure about that, then God offered him the ultimate gift to convince him….The “Wh*re of Babylon”!Who could have resisted on that?

Lucky Tower Ultimate

Lucky Tower Ultimate

You can play a very early prototype of the game right now. The prototype will allow a glimpse into the first segment of the game. The final version will be vastly improved and expanded in the coming years, so we are eager for feedback! A link to the Discord can be found in the Steam forums.

Lucky Tower Ultimate is a humor driven, narrative roguelike. The narcissistic, clumsy knight Von Wanst attempts to escape a mysterious tower in an absurd adventure. On each of the tower’s floors you’ll need to decide between three doors that reveal deadly traps, monsters, or even other prisoners that might join his escape party.

Everything and everyone reacts to the way you treat them and thus shapes your adventure for better or worse. Selfishly slash your way down and use your companions to your advantage or safely reach the ground together as a team.

Fueled by sassy slapstick humor and hand drawn graphics, the game has each run feel like an immersive cartoon.

Up for grabs - good for stabs!

  • From broccoli to dead enemies, everything in the game can be picked up and used as a weapon

There’s tons of characters in the adventure alphabet!

  • Randomly generated levels and haircuts keep every playthrough fresh

Friends turn to foes if you step on their toes

  • All characters react to the way you treat them - what goes around comes around

  • Join forces with companions you meet or abuse their powers

Looks like a cartoon, feels like a joke.

  • A hero that makes dying fun

  • Hand-drawn 2D graphics

Kickin’ times for smashing punchlines.

  • Voice acting for all dialogues make for an immersive world

Mad Mustache is a “template flip”, that is to say, it’s a “game” that has been produced by copying a game template from GameMaker Studio, changing a few things, then dumping the barely functional “product” on Steam as a cheap, nasty cash grab. In this case it was a GameMaker Studio template for doing a simple 2D top down single screen twin stick shooter. HotFoodGames have ripped off a number of GameMaker Studio templates, and each one is lazy, low effort, and valueless shovelware garbage.

GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and results in terrible games like this one.

Dig Dog

Dig Dog

One of my absolute contenders to the game of the year in this 2018, and one of the most perfect arcade experiences that I have found in Steam since ‘Switch ‘N’ Shoot’.

Basically, ‘Dig Dog’ is ‘Spelunky’ at the speed of cocaine. It uses a procedural algorithm for the construction of a descendant layout that is as fine tuned and well balanced as in Derek Yu’s influential classic.

But in its main mechanic it looks to the sheer arcade intensity of drilling Japanese arcade games, feeling like a much more intense and less cerebral version of ‘Mr. Driller,’ that instead in the use of logic or puzzle elements, it relies in your ninja skills.

It is rare to find such simple mechanics, graphics and music done so well. This game is a love letter to games of yore that if released decades ago would be considered a classic. The controls are extremely responsive and tight making it so that each risky situation you get out of and each death you suffer feels completely responsible to your actions, and your actions alone.

The graphics while primarily black, white and two shades of a background color convey all the information you need to know about the game: White means its an entity of some sort, yellow means it harbors a coin, red means it harbors a heart. The only downside I have found when it comes to the mechanics being a bit of difficulty in figuring out exactly what the power-ups actually do, however with some quick experimentation it becomes clear.

Platformines

Platformines

This is a really fun little game. While it is kind of little, it’s worth the time you’ll spend. You are, I guess, an explorer, trying to make money, while shooting baddies and monsters, avoiding traps, collecting treasure, and ultimately platforming his way to riches. You’ll run into a small variety of enemies, from other humans with many degress of dififfculty to work through, to more exotic monsters, as you try to build the machine that will transport you out of the caves and to the surface.

Playing with a controller strongly recommended!

Reliving the days gone by.

For those who want to relive the old pixelated days of spelunking and exploring a

world with a new twist, Platformines is a great choice.

Platformines plays more like a classic rogue game with simple graphics, simple rules and addicting gameplay. In this world, you start as a named character derived from the clothing with which you’ve equipped your character. You explore the world with the hope of reviving your spaceship and escaping the planet. Unlike old games, the spaceship is made entirely of blocks and your mission is to find all the block-cannons that allow you to repair your ship by filling in the missing blocks. Thankfully there’s a map, waypoint, and numerous portals which make this considerably easier. Unlike Binding of Issac, death doesn’t remove you from the map which is both good and bad.

After playing the mobile version (which is great by the way), this definitely feels easier but also more fun with some added movement options. It’s a fast paced shooter/platformer with some replay-ability and different characters each with their own playstyles and bosses. Overall, not too heavy on the bullet hell aspect.

The translations to English isn’t perfect, but still understandable and the UI was clearly designed with mobile in mind and could use some adaptation to PC/controller/mouse.

Real player with 6.8 hrs in game

Coming from the free mobile release, I’m gonna say it right here: the PC version did not meet my expectation. I do recommend the game still if you can go past the issues, or at least play the mobile version.

The controls just hardly translate well from touch screen to controller (or keyboard). Also, since the game got no way to change your controller deadzone, it’s very easy to have the experience messed up by a very slight drift of your joystick, making your character jump in a direction even doe you want him to jump without moving.

Shadowlings

Shadowlings

Shadowlings had a nice appeal for the first 15 minutes. It looked nice and felt nice. The way combat is done felt like something new. Sadly the initial appeal wears off very quickly and slowly declines into a boring grindfest. You get loads of money and XP with no real need for either of them. I kept waiting for game to become more interesting, but it never did. I even thought the final boss was just a prelude to the real boss. After an easy 1min fight you get a few lines of how you are now the leader of your clan, which btw you were the only survivor of…

Real player with 8.6 hrs in game

Really good game, simplistic but lots of strategy involved. I’m lazy and that’s all I want to type for now, but overall it’s highway robbery at .99 cents. I kind of feel bad buying it that cheap. I think 5-7.50 USD would be a perfect price for this. I’ll come back later or tomorrow when I’m sober and expand on what I think could be improved on a bit. All simple fixes too. Anyways, highly recommended, great 2d top strategic swordfighter game.
