The Walking Vegetables

The Walking Vegetables

Got it for free for a week. The Short Beta Key from Bundlestars (as of Nov.1 named Fanatical) I enjoyed very much.

I didnt beat the game despite wielding the Giant almost every playtrough and blasting everything with one shot weapons… but I see its potential. Of all the twin stick coop shooters I played this has one of the best gameplay feelings to it. Repetitiveness is also not a big deal since you yourself can chose how fast you go from chapter to chapter.

There are lots of weapons which you can all collect and select on a weapon wheel while the time slows down around you THere is also a melee component which is a must to get rid of incoming enemies and some projectiles. Furthermore you got your trusty randomization, respawning enemy waves, shops and crate drops after clearing out houses. It is also kid friendly since most of the time you will be slaughtering bizarre looking vegetables - which you can still hit with you melee weapon for a short time after you already killed them. So satisfying!

This game’s nice. Maybe not GOTY, but most things work well enough.

The structure is simple enough - to beat the campaign (which is something you’ll do multiple times), you have to get past several “chapters”, each concluding with a boss fight. Areas consists of a large “hub” (which has paths to other areas and constantly spawning enemies), multiple “objective areas” (where you fight a number of enemies to unlock the path to the boss), multiple buildings (which are also filled with enemies and can be fought through for loot) and a shop.

Black Future ‘88

Black Future ‘88

Do I recommend Black Future ‘88?

Tough one. “Yes and no” would be my answer.

I’ve spent a little more than a full day as whole playing this game. And, sadly, this is probably as much enjoyment as I am going to get from it. And yet, these 26 hours were (mostly) a blast. It’s fast, it’s brutal, it’s hard, it has some cool cryptic mechanics to discover, it allows you to build your character from many varying pieces you find throughout the game - traits, weapons, powerups, curses. It’s quite a lot.

TL;DR: If you like Rogue Lites, this one is certainly one of the standouts. I easily recommend the game. I didn’t know where I could fit in the soundtrack part of the review, so I’ll just say that while it doesn’t transcend the genre, it’s good all around and even has some great tracks.

Black Future ‘88 is a Platformer Rogue Lite (or Action Rogue Like, if you prefer) in which you race against the clock to climb Skymelt, the living tower, and defeat the architect of the apocalypse, Duncan. People have described this game as style over substance. If you look at gameplay, you might be forgiven to think so too. It’s a visual and auditory overload of neon colors, flashes and sounds. However, if you take the time to adapt yourself to it, and learn it’s quirks, you’ll make sense of it and it becomes surprisingly readable.

Wave Shooter

Wave Shooter

Uhm, yeah.

The best features of this game are the gun sounds and the soundtrack and since said soundtrack consists of one single song, it does become annoying pretty fast.

Movement is clunky since there are many invisible obstacles blocking your path.

Pretty much anything about this game is tedious and it offers nothing to redeem that.

Another overseas indie developer relying on Google translate and having terrible grammar as a result.

…Another indie developer relying on pretty assets directly from the Unreal marketplace to make his game for him.

…..And the end result is another ridiculously over-priced game and a M.I.S.S. video and review from yours truly.

This might be acceptable as a first project to show off for free to friends and family and/or to get feedback from on itch or gamejolt. This is not something that be on Steam especially at an asking price of $16 USD! ..W T F !?

A badly made “wave shooter” With horror element thats not scary since everything is cute which defeats the whole purpose

Real player with 0.1 hrs in game

I’m not quite sure what to say about ‘Plush Madness’. You can play co-op or single-player and the idea is to kill any killer teddies coming towards you by shaking them or pulling their arms, legs or heads off and you search a house looking for something all while on a timer to something. There is no story here, no fun, barely any grapics and certainly nothing worth the £3.99 aksing price. It’s not even scary because all the rooms are well light and the “killer teddies” are quite cute! This gets a thumbs down from me, but maybe with some improvements it will be worth a revisit.

Roguebreaker

Roguebreaker

It has been a pleasure working with Josh Bergasse to playtest Roguebreaker and watch it develop from the earlier builds. The game has come a long way, and I honestly believe that Josh has created a product worthy of your time and attention.

Roguebreaker is a passion project that Josh wanted to see come to fruition long before coding even began. The concept of an 80s themed arcade game with modern conveniences and features (level editor, workshop support, incredible powerups, etc.) was one that he knew would be a perfect blend, and he was right.

This review was not sponsored by, or paid for by, any entity or being in all of creation. There was a free key given to me, simply because they wanted exposure. so. here it is.

RogueBreaker is a hellishly fun game that aesthetically takes you back to the NES days of Arkanoid (if you remember that). Its music is absolutely immersive and brutal, but also light hearted. Its gameplay is friendly to start off with, but it gets harder…and harder… and harder… AND HARDER until it goes absolutely APE!@#$ insane!.

WASTED

WASTED

Welcome to 1980. Welcome… to the end of the world. All of the inteligent people died. The stupid lives.

WASTED is… many things. That being a Fallout-esque Borderlands-looking Rogue Legacy-progressing Teleglitch-randomising Spelunky-paced and overall unique rogue-like game. WOW THAT’S A LOT OF WORDS

And now, for an actual review:

  • The intro probably left you bonkers, so let me explain that for you: oh, uhm… I actually don’t know where to start. How about the premise.* The whole thing the game’s got running for it is that by the end of the year 1980 a nuclear holocaust happened between the communists and America. To prevent the population from dying, the so called “coolers” were created as a shelter against radiation. Everything is done ala Fallout style so far. However, there’s a twist! All of the people in the cooler ended up drunk! So when the earth became repopulable again, everybody was stupid! They drank all the booze they could find, injected everything that was sharp in them and the currency for trading became TP(short for TOILER PAPER), which I have to agree with TotalBiscuit, it actually makes more sense than the Bottlecap currency in Fallout.

Real player with 158.9 hrs in game

The short: It’s fun to pick up and play for an hour or two, then put it down again, though it lacks any kind of depth at all. It parodies many elements from the Fallout series and has great dumb humour. Play it like you were going to play an arcade FPS like Doom and not expecting it to be much like a roguelike at all beyond perma-death, procedurally generated levels and permanent bonuses/maluses. The weapon selection and equipment in general is kind of lackluster, with a handful actually looking like the developer really tried to make them function differently from the others in interesting ways. Buy this on sale if you’re tight on cash. If you have the disposable income though, feel free to give it a shot, it’s a decent time waster but nothing spectacular.
