Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9

Okay so, at the time of writing this I have 3 bosses down.

Yes, I did back this game. Yes I did play the beta.

I won’t deny this game has a lot of controversy around it. But I’m gonna try to stick to the game itself.

Is it bad? No. Could it be better? yeah, but it’s still satisfying.

Is it worth the hate it gets? No, I would say not.

Most importantly, is the game fun? Yes.

I strongly recommend people play, and I mean actually play, not just the 0.2 hour times we’re seeing in the reviews, and form your own opinion.

Mighty No.9 should be a textbook case of how to not destroy the expectations of everyone who was craving this game. There hasn’t been a Megaman or Megaman X game in years, this should have been a cakewalk for this team to do and other studios have shown they can get very close to getting that Megaman feel. I’ll get this out of the way first- I’m not going to go into the gripes about the Kickstarter campaign, or the long wait, or all the other campaigns that were started before this way finished- they have been discussed to death already and you can check from other sources if you still wish to support the game by buying it.

Starlight Inception™™

I bought this game knowing it was early access. First time i tried to play it i couldn’t because of a movie loading glitch. As soon as it loaded and you came to the splash screen it crashed. First i asked the devs to take a look into this matter, and they say they had it fixed. Four months later i reinstalled the game and the same thing happened. So i took it upon myself to try to fix the game and found out if you delete all the movies you can get to the menue and play the game. The controls are not smooth and if you don’t play with an xbox controller, you have no hope in completing the game. Even the contols for the xbox are not smooth and jerky. Trying to aim at a moving target is hopeless if you want to use your guns and you only have limited amount of missles that you have to buy after each mission.

I bought this game on one of the old steam sales which means it was pretty cheap, and it was early access, so i though it would be a little clunky but functional.

It was not, animation was awful, story was awful, campaign was awful and the controls were just abysmal, even with mouse targeting the aim in the center would snap in pre-fixed positions, like if you could turn 360 degrees but actually only in increments of one, 1º, 2º, 3º and so on but never 1.5 or any subdivision for that matter, it was just unplayable.

Legends of Aethereus

Legends of Aethereus

Legends of Aethereus is a behind-the-player-character, action role playing game set in the land of Aethereus. Do quests handed out in the hub city. Marvel at the gorgeous art design, then feel dissappointed at the lack of opportunities for interaction. Buy and sell crafting material and weapons and armour at traders. Or craft weapons and armour at the blacksmith (crafting material can also be collected during quests). Play one of two classes - one focused on brute strength and the other one deploying devices (e.g. mines, turrets, etc.). Develop special moves (called a skill tree in-game, but it really isn’t). Use a complicated but accessible combat system in satisfying combat against (admittedly cookie-cutter) foes. Play with up to three friends. Enter your character(s) in the arena to earn more gold and materials. Outfit your apartment (a feature that isn’t fully developed at the moment). Generally have fun (yes!). Be amazed at the game’s potential. Then visit the forums (or do that before buying) and lament the lack of updates.

Back when Legends of Æthereus was crowdfunded, I didn’t manage to fund it. However I bought it for the full price on their website shortly hereafter - only because of Linux support.

At that time Legends of Æthereus was in an alpha state and hardly playable on my hardware at that time. I did manage to get the initial feel and concept of where the game was heading, and I promised to return when some of the more game-breaking bugs was fixed and I upgraded my hardware.

Fast forward 3 months and I had finally purchased up to date hardware and decided to give Legends of Æthereus another go.

Adventures of Pip

Adventures of Pip

As a supporter of this game since its first Kickstarter with high hopes and standards for the game, I’m thoroughly glad to be able to finally recommend this game to everyone!

tl;dr: The Adventures of Pip offers a tight and well-balanced puzzle platforming experience bolstered by its strong soundtrack, visuals, and mechanics but marred by a slightly weak story!

Adventures of Pip showcases, well, Pip’s adventure as he seeks to save the land from the evil Skeleton Queen!

The Bit Stream allows him to transform between 3 different forms/resolutions, from a one-bit boxel to a sword-wielding 16-bit warrior. Each form has its own benefits and drawbacks (as a boxel, Pip is slow, weak, but can float and greatly decrease the speed of his fall), allowing for many variations in gameplay as you evolve and devolve Pip to solve the many puzzles in the game! It’s an awesome concept utilized very well in conjunction with the tight controls and varying game mechanics!

$15.00 are they serious???

While the game is nowhere near worth that price, it is a very fun, occasionally challenging platformer to play. The story is that some evil queen has kidnapped the kingdom’s princess knowing that she has the ability to create pixels from nothingness. The queen hopes to absorb this power and reverse it, turning game characters in the kingdom back to pixels. The queen further wreaks havoc on the kingdom by taking 108 of its villagers and hiding them in a variety of 5 landscapes that have been divided into 36 levels for your gaming pleasure. Like always the Evil queen lets the power get to her head and for no reason whatsoever decides that she needs to turn everyone into a pixel so that they no longer are a threat.

An absolute mind blowing experience. This is the Mona Lisa of video games. Had my mind not been destroyed by the first two levels I would have more than 25 minutes into this astonishing accomplishment of our modern times.

Knights And Bikes

Knights And Bikes

Knights and Bikes!

I LOVED this game! I had never heard of Foam Sword prior to this game, but when I heard that Double Fine Presents was publishing it, I was immediately excited. At no point playing Knights and Bikes was I ever bored. The game had me enthralled from start to finish. Playing this game reminded me what it was like to be a kid at that awkward stage where you still believe in magic and fairy stories, but aren’t content to just read them anymore. You desperately want your own adventure. Running around in your bare feet, splashing in puddles on rainy days, and hanging out with your friends until the street lights came on. After completing the game, I felt wistful, joyous, and strangely– a little sad. It’s been awhile since a game has made me feel so many emotions.

Knights and Bikes is one of the most magical, wonderful experiences I’ve had with a video game in a long time. It’s a beautiful, stunning masterpiece filled with puzzles, charm and heart. It’s a perfect game for anyone of almost any age - accessible without being basic, intuitive to play. It’s a fantastic game in co-op or solo, and the fact it works so well solo despite being clearly designed around co-op is a real achievement by itself.

It’s the kind of game I’m hesitant to say too much about, because a lot of the joy comes from the constantly surprising innovation on display. Demelza and Nessa are two of the most endearing protagonists I’ve encountered, and the game’s just filled with beautiful nostalgia for anyone who was ever a child at any point, which is like 99.4% of people. It’s also really quaint and quirky without being annoyingly twee; whereas in the wrong hands the plot could’ve been saccharine cringe, here it’s tonally spot on at every turn.

Open Mod

Open Mod

Open Mod is a free-to-play, tactical first person shooter that, for the time being, revolves around the bank robbery game mode. Being a team of two, we focused our attention on the game mechanics and customizability, having as a main goal providing our players the opportunity to personalize their experience on as many levels as possible.

The gameplay consists of, as expected, a bank robbery, where one team must rob the bank and escape with the money through certain routes, while the military must eliminate them before they do so.

Patchman vs. Red Circles

Patchman vs. Red Circles

The game is a little hidden gem, especially if you like some shrouded mysteries with

! dystopian theme. Despite it, while the game is funny and suitable to all ages, don’t mistake it for your usual casual game! It actually have more in common with Super Meat Boy with some levels being ridiculously hard, especially later down the road. Sure, it is beatable, but if you crank the difficulty to hard or aim for some achievements, some levels will get you annoyed until you finally beat it ;).

I took a chance on this one, which popped up in my discovery queue. I can now say it’s my favorite game in the “stealth farming” genre, and I can recommend it to those who are looking for something weird and endearing. The graphics style reminds me of good old DOS games or early Windows 95 ones such as Lemmings Paintball. The soundtrack is excellently chosen to complement the style.

If you’re put off by stories about freeing the brainwashed masses, ones named “Sheeple” for that matter, I wouldn’t worry about it. This game doesn’t hit you over the head with some obnoxious message along those lines. Instead it draws you in and charms you, taking the timeless values of care for the environment, healthy eating, and not being controlled by the media or machines, and presents them in the most playful way. This game makes me want to eat more oranges.

Shenmue III

Shenmue III

Ah, Shenmue 3, how I have longed for the light of your presence to shine upon thee…

Heads up to those who peruse this review: I’m a HUGE shenmue fan. I backed this game on kickstarter and have played the game twice on Sony PlayStation 4.

Let’s forget all of the nonsense associated with Deep Silver and the Epic Game Store exclusivity. How is THE GAME?

A mixed bag.

Let’s start with the graphical presentation. Shenmue 1&2 were AAA games back in the day; the most expensive games every produced up until that time. Shenmue 3 is a AA game; as such you cannot go into this expecting the latest cutting edge graphics.

Real player with 110.8 hrs in game

Before starting my review, I’d like to point out that we really need a mixed review option on Steam. I hope Gaben will hear our prayers one day. Anyway, as most of you know, Shenmue III is the highest funded Kickstarter game and it is definitely one of the longest awaited one. How long was it… 20 years? I’m not a loyal Shenmue fan, I didn’t wait 20 years for it, in fact, first time I’ve played Shenmue was a few months ago but I was aware of its significance and contributions to the video game culture of course. I also didn’t contributed anything to its Kickstarter campaign but putting myself in one of the loyal fans' place, I’d be extremely disappointed by this game. Especially after waiting nearly 20 years for it. Although I have no doubt that Yu Suzuki and YS Net did their best to bring a solid title to the fans, they’ve made a grave mistake by striking a deal with Deep Silver. 1 year Epic Store exclusivity was straight up disrespectful towards the people who contributed to Kickstarter campaign. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes with Shenmue IV. Anyway, let’s take a look at the redeeming qualities first…

Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND

Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND

Warning: The netcode is delay based and current population of regulars is maybe 10 people max (including myself) who are pretty chill but kinda insular, who also happen to have solid connections with each other (mostly). The patch notes for Xtend are available, but the Mizuumi section for Xtend is largely barren. The game is also apparently tied to your monitor refresh and needs to be capped through external methods. The training is lackluster and does not not natively have a input display.

Turn back now if these factors are a turn off, or just plain inconvenient - which is entirely reasonable.

This has probably been my favorite surprise-release of 2017, at least in the fighting game genre, since I had no idea this game existed, let alone was going to be released.

Now, despite the fact that I am a big fan of games like Nitro+, UNIEL, Aquapazza, Melty, etc, I never really got into AH3LM. The main reason was likely because, at the time I picked it up on Steam, barely anyone played, and those who did would body someone like me before I could even confirm anything. The other problem was, while I could get my friends interested enough to try out BlazBlue, or UNIEL, or even Nitro+, for some reason, no one would give AH3LM a try for some reason. So, since I was limited to continual training for the off chance of an online match, or single player modes, I had pretty much dropped the game, except for the occasional itch for something different.
