Paint the Town Red

Paint the Town Red

Paint the Town Red is a medium-paced bar fighting game with a large variety of weapons and enemies now and here to come. It still needs a bit of optimization, but the devs assure us that the game will be optimized as the game progresses (And updates.)

The enemies are completely destructible. You could dissolve someone if you have enough time and the weapon doesn’t break. All the voxels on the enemies have different properties, with bone being the strongest natural voxel and skin being the weakest. (You will be able to damage Riot Helmets later on, but those aren’t natural.) Additional fact, is that if a enemy’s brain is damaged in anyway, they will instantly die, if they don’t, its a bug.

Punch the square people. Do it. Punch them.

A great sandbox fighter game with a lot of options to play and replay various scenarios and workshop access, allowing for a near infinite supply of content.

The game also has a rogue-like dungeon crawler on top of all the sandbox fun that initially existed, adding what is the value of basically a second game of a different genre, with similar mechanics, on top, for absolutely free (That’s what I feel about it, as I bought the game in early access, wayyy before Beneath was even on the table). Beneath is a great dungeon crawler, with many different levels, mechanics and upgrades to take you through the different bosses of the game, most of them with their very own environment and even full levels with new enemies, just to build up to another boss fight.

I’ve been playing this game for a couple years now and despite little there may be in terms of content i cant help but come back time and time again. Despite the game being incomplete this is some of the most fun gameplay/gunplay i’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing, that really have been showcased in the newer or updated levels. The way this game has grown over time has been such a pleasure to experience. Even when i first started playing it was easy to have a blast but as more content is added it just gets better and better. My absolute favorite improvement has the levels. The newer updated levels feel so fleshed out and despite being linear (which i think assists the gameplay) has such fun flow and pacing. There may be only a few right now that really entertain but im more than looking forward to more,

Originally, I refunded.

Let me start over. Originally I loved the videos on the Maximum Action Steam profile page. Loved the looks! Violent. Bloody. GORY. Guns. Bullet time. What’s not to love? Well, the controls, the graphics, and the movement. Those don’t seem so great… So I refunded this game.

Then time set in. You know the saying, “You don’t know what you got until it’s gone.”

I recalled the short time I gave Max Action a chance and did miss it. But I tried to move on with my life. Less than a week later, I was jonsing for another shot, but definitely not Max Action. So I played Max Payne 3. Not good enough. Fired up Max Payne 1. Closer.

BUTCHER

BUTCHER

Butcher is a game that is deeply rooted in the violent, gritty run-and-gun games of the mid-to-late 90’s, and does a perfect job of recreating that feeling while still retaining its own unique identity.

First off, let’s talk graphics, since that’s the first thing you’re probably gonna notice from this game’s store page. While taking obvious visual inspiration from Abuse (1996)’s dark and grimy run-and-gun action and the gory violence of Doom, Quake, and even Liero, the game still manages to create its own, entirely consistent low-resolution aesthetic.

BUTCHER is a lovesong to the type of game that concerned moms and the media imagined when the ESRB was just a twinkle in Senator Joe Lieberman’s eye. You are an emotionless Terminator-style robot sent to eradicate the last vestiges of humanity in an assortment of bleak environments like foundries and cyberpunk cities. Your victims gasp and gurgle as they bleed out, or get eaten by mutant wildlife, or crushed by machinery; oppressive electronica thrums in the background of each level.

You get the idea.

Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour

Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour

The game in short: Pixelized top-down version of Serious Sam. Great artwork, fantastic recreation of original game essence, decent level design.

And you can see it from other reivews. So I give this game a thumb-up. It’s a good game.

But I want to mainly talk about the editor or the mod support.

It looks good outside, however inside the process is rather miserable.

The editor is too shabby. It can barely get the job done.

There is not much of GUI. A history panel stores up to 10 action for you to undo, taking up 1/6 of the window, while most part of it is blank, and you can’t increase the number of records. Some resource tabs, with only the path-styled string identifying them. A view of game camera and a properties tab. That’s all.

“The game is fun… …If it’s not fun, why bother?”

  • Reggie “My Body is Ready” Fils-Aime, 2017

The technical presentation of the game is amazing. The pixelated graphics capture the feeling of old school twinstick shooters such as Smash TV (the inspiration for the Serious Sam series as a whole) and the sound effects are on point and never sound out-of-place. Damjan Mravunac (prounounced White Whytee) composed a phenomenal soundtrack for this title. It’s a mix of his usual percussions, but this time it’s mixed with retro-sounding electronic synths that gives the game its own identity music-wise (as in, you certainly won’t confuse this game’s soundtrack with other Serious Sam’s). The levels are all massive and rewards exploration. There’s plenty of secrets hidden around in the form of ammo, guns, Stars, and EXP that helps the player get stronger via upgrades. Almost every object in the game can be destroyed and turned into debris, sometimes rewarding the player with small goodies for doing so. The effects are amazing for a 2D top-down game; when you move into a dark area, the light will shift the shadows around in realtime. The lighting and shadows in the game is beautiful in general. The controls are tight, and Sam’s ability to dodgeroll is a wonderful welcome.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition

Really great game. Good story, great humour, amazing graphics in some places, great gun play & I loved the voice acting. The score combos are fun & makes getting kills interesting, especially for environmental kills and the survival co-op was pretty fun as well. Having the Duke Nukem DLC made things pretty interesting as well as it makes all the main story voice lines for Grayson, Duke Nukem. It was funny as hell. Highly recommend checking this game out.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition

I like when games bought just because they were cheap turn out to be hidden gems. I also like first person shooters with unique mechanics (Bioshock, Rage, The Darkness 2, Borderlanands, KF2, Call of Juarez Gunslinger to name a few).

I got Bulletstorm for like a couple bucks on 90% sale but oh boy game gave me back amount of fun worth its full price!

Pros:

  • Game is like Devil May Cry but with guns. What it means is that the game isn’t about just killing enemies but doing so with style . The core gameplay is all about doing Skillshots - various stylish kills using provided guns and/or environment (environment in this game is full of death traps for killing enemies). For example, you can ignite enemies using alt-fire of one of the guns and then finish them off with other gun untill they die from burning or you make stun a miniboss and kill him by swinging his head off and so on… Doing skillshots is a certain way to oneshot an enemy because even the weakiest enemies are bulletsponge if you try to blindfire them + skillshots award you with style points which are ingame currency for buying ammo and upgrades for your tools of madness.

[A REVIEW FOR THE DEVS AT CROTEAM]

I didn’t want to leave a review like this, but I love Serious Sam too much to not be honest. This is the first Sam game that deserves a thumbs down. I feel like I need to highlight exactly why this game isn’t just a bad Serious Sam game, but a bad game by itself. My criticism may be harsh, but is meant to be constructive, as I still love this series and want this game to improve.

WEAPONS

The arsenal is good, with all guns from SS3 returning, as well as new ones. But while this game has the same problem with balance like other Sam games (some of Sam’s arsenal becomes useless as the game progresses), the balance is also broken in a number of ways, including SS4’s new dual-wielding and headshotting.

“This review will turn to positive if Croteam fixes what is listed below”

As much as I love the other Serious Sam games this one just makes me sad. Croteam gave us 3 years of hype to end up with a disappointment of a game, this game had some great features but also came out with bad game mechanics. Lets summarize them in a list below:

Cons:-

1- Bad voice acting. Seriously Rodriguez from serious sam 3 was only on screen for like 1:30 of time and he had better voice quality than the entirety of serious sam 4. (this also includes Kenny, Hellfire, Quinn, and the rest of the characters.) the only guy that was actually interesting to listen to is Jones… but he literally dies like the next chapter of you meeting him in the previous one.

Review has been updated to match version 1.0!

Updated again for the 2017 badge, I might actually redo this review - again.

It’s about time I wrote my own review on this game, and I want to make it extra clear that my review should be held accurate to its date

! I postponed writing one because I’m not honestly very well-structured or that diligent on writing these things. But for the sake of inspiring people, I’ll give it a try.

UNLOVED is basically what the DOOM II mod was in terms of theme and perhaps story too (They are both very occult-ish and subtle, so it’s unclear!) and if you are not familiar with the mod, then you can Google “Unloved doom wad” and get your hands on it immediately. I strongly recommend it if you own a copy of DOOM II.

Real player with 1605.0 hrs in game

UNLOVED, from here on out abbreviated as UL, is a horror FPS based on the Doom 2 mod, bearing the same name.

The goal of the game is to collect 3 keys for 3 different types of doors, filling 7 blood machines and then escape via the elevator. Easier said than done, because everything you open or pick up generates heat. The more heat, the more and stronger enemies the game throws at you.

The good

The gameplay is comparable to (as it is based on a mod of Doom after all): fast-paced, messy and lots of items like health, armor, weapons, ammunition, powerups, collectibles and weapon upgrades. It has an arcade touch to it.

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One

I really wanted to like this…

But in the end, I didn’t.

Some gameplay spoilers and one MAJOR story spoiler ahead

So, Doom Eternal. I loved the fuck out of this game, despite being relatively different game than Doom 2016. Eternal gave so much more than standard Run&Gun gameplay that you see in most shooters, modern or old. You got various types of demons, which required personal approach to each of them. More mobility to bolt around the arenas. More tools to help you survive the vicious onslaught of Hell’s armies. And, by Slayers balls, juggling all of these was FUN.

Introduction

DOOM Eternal was my most anticipated game of this year, which managed to exceed my expectations due to its amazing singleplayer, of which I loved every moment. So, I was naturally thrilled to hear that we will get two additional campaign expansions. And I am delighted to say that The Ancient Gods – Part One is a fantastic expansion, which I loved playing as much as the original campaign, and I cannot wait for the upcoming Part Two.

Even though this expansion is playable without owning the original game, I would still recommend getting the original DOOM Eternal first because the expansion throws you right into the action without explaining the basics.
