INTRODUCTION

“Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron - Flyboyz Edition” is an arcade shooter I first became aware of in a preview of the mobile version in a “White Dwarf” magazine from 2017. I am only now getting to reading my older issues, yet before I got to even look the mobile game up on the Google Play Store, this was announced for PC. Being a long time player of the greenskins I knew I was destined to join their ranks once more. I am a long time PC gamer who enjoys mobile ports, in fact I often prefer them for a casual aside to more serious games. Mobile platforms are quite often the testing ground for potential PC releases and this is becoming more and more the case.

I have mixed feelings about this game, but I will approve of it for 40k fans who are fond of the Orks.

There is barely any background information about the 40k setting in the game itself, and there is an unspoken assumption that the person who is playing this game is already familiar with the lore, so people who are not 40k fans will probably not care about what is going on.

Graphic settings are practically a joke: There is a single low/medium/high graphics option and the ability to turn VSync on or off, and that’s it. The framerate is capped at 60 FPS in-game, and while it easily keeps to that cap, this might bother some people with higher end gaming PCs with a +120Hz monitor.

youre welcome to read the full review, but let me say that after 130h clocked in this game, playing god knows how many relic hunts on chaos 3-5 with max modifiers, ive yet to achieve more than 3-4 greens on a char, out of 10 possible wearables.

this game is straight up just boring. i am a huge warhammer nerd, and ive had so much hope for this game, it had the potential, might still have. but its so much reusing the same stuff, main story is basically the same story and progression four times. were talking with so little difference you hardly see it.

This game is if Diablo 3 had no expansion, was the first game of the studio and just threw a fine and well Warhammer coat of paint on it. This is by all means a good Warhammer RPG game, but this is no true Hardcore RPG experince alikes to POE or GD

… why should I even get this?

If you’re REALLY having a diablo itch and nothings doing it for ya, this will probably be a very good time for you. This is not a hard game with really not a whole lot of setting up to do with builds or complications with how things really work. This is a great introduction to the Diablo-Like Top Down RPGS for a basic, repetitive but overall fun experience

I earned myself a Vermintide steam key after winning a review contest for a local gaming community with my written work on the classic grand strategy of Rome: Total War. I played Vermintide for the first time in the winter break of 2017, thinking that it will offer a few hours of good fun with friends over the holidays.

This game changed my life. To say that the developers at Fatshark have poured their souls into this title would be an understatement. For me it rightfully has a place in the hall of timeless gems such as Quake, Thief: The Dark Project or SOMA. It has not only provided me with great value for my time and a sense of accomplishment as I learned its various facets and overcome all of its challenges, but at a human level it has allowed me to connect with people who have become some of my best friends. For this alone I could offer nothing but praise to this game.

A hectic fast paced hack and slash action game intended to be played co-op with friends. You play one of five characters each with slightly different play styles and each with a variety of possible weapon choices unique to them. You play through missions with simple objectives and recurring crescendo events against a horde of rat men, finding supplies on the way. You get a random piece of loot after each mission. Weapons can be upgraded/broken down/crafted with the Shrine and Anvil in the inn lobby.

TLDR: Despite being incredibly buggy, frustrating and deeply flawed I still managed to while away a couple of hundred hours and did, ultimately, enjoy the experience

Elephant in the room: AI: It is incredibly bad. Pathfinding, target selection, strategy, character builds and movement. I can now predict what the AI will do in a turn and it trivialises the engagements. It prioritises objectives over everything else, including survival. As a lot of objectives take away your weapons (you use your arms to pick them up, no shoulder mounted weapons) it becomes a turkey shoot. This means the 1:1 encounters are more or less a gimme, but the 3 and 4 gang engagements become more interesting because there are limited objectives so the AI actually becomes more aggressive.

OK… so I don’t genuinely review games because opinion is often so divided on what one individual will enjoy and another will despise. Yet I felt compelled to say a few things about this game, so will jot them down here to be read or discarded at leisure.

Firstly I would like to say that in terms of whether I am giving the game a thumbs up, the answer is yes. As you will probably have seen through other reviews the game currently has some flaws. Many minor, some major - I will get to those shortly. Outside of the bugs, however, if you’re a fan of the whole Games Workshop 40k vibe and enjoy strategy games… then I would say that it’s a must have. Yes it has issues, but I believe these will be addressed, in time. Unfortunately it suffers from what has become something of an “epidemic” amongst modern computer games… where the people holding the purse strings determine release schedules and not the developers. I have worked in the industry for 20 years, so I do know a little of what I’m talking about. When the devs say they need three years and the company tells them they have 18 months… you know you’re in for trouble from the outset. Games will release buggy and the additional development time will emerge as patches and DLC. It’s shortsightedness. Financial losses through poor reviews could easily be avoided by a few more months of careful bug fixing. But I’m wandering off point.

Fabius Bile shows up, and I thoroughly appreciate that decision on the part of the Developers. I’d voiced some concerns early on that your player character always seemed as though he could duel Khorne and come out the victor, but the inclusion of characters like Fabius Bile helps to give the player character some realism.

Typhus, Luscious Lucius the Eternal, Miniature Angron, and Ahzek Ahriman are four major Champions for their respective Chaos Gods, these are four extremely famous and powerful characters, and Bile is often mentioned alongside them. The fact that, should you manage to beat Fabius Bile in a fight, you’ll only really be defeating a clone makes for an amazing, reusable character for the game. He’s an extremely powerful lore character, with real motivation and relevance to the story.

Standalone:

W40K Inquisitor Martyr left us with a hefty cliff-hanger… An Uber powerful warrior, age old conspiracies mixed in with so much secrecy… An Inquisitor’s dream job to depict!

Now it’s back continuing that story and with it comes some new goodies and features. A new 2.0 rule set along with a variety of other mechanics that have joined the Prophecy. You do not need to own Martyr to play Prophecy, but if you do, your character progression will be carried over to Prophecy and you can pick up where you left off.

Best way to describe this game: Doom in 40k. Brilliant game, the athmosphare is pure 40k, the amount of deatail given to this part of the Univers is asonishing. You can tell that the developpers were pashionate and new what they were doing with the Environment. Controls and Gameplay are also verry intuitif and streamlined.

On the negative Side, the Story is pretty bad. But i didn’t buy it for it anyways. Also, there is not as mutch to do as I would wish. The main story can probably be completed in a few hours, and the other stuff are just missions that offer no real reward, besides practice and XP. Personaly, I would also have preffered if you could have more guns on you. especially special weapons. Those are realy well made, but I cant use them, because I would have to swap another favorit of mine out.

The best I can say for this game is simple: It looks like Warhammer 40k. I like that, so it’s a good point. But is it a “Dawn of War” game? No, it’s not. It’s just another RTS. It departs from the legacy of Dawn of War and returns to the way twitch-gaming. Is there something to like about it? Sure, there is… but there’s NOTHING to like about it in way of what I would expect from the Dawn of War series.

DoW1 was more combat-focused than Starcraft, which was why I loved it… but I greatly favored DoW2, because it emphasized tactical play, which I prefer. My review centers around this idea.

If you expect a Dawn of War game, if you expect a Relic style RTS with complex tactical gameplay and features you won’t find in other strategy games, the style relic became famous for, look elsewhere, this game is none of that.

And that’s where the problem lies. If this game was a new IP, I’d probably give it a positive review and call it an interesting experiment for the RTS market.

But it’s not a new IP is it? it’s Dawn of War. And as far as Dawn of War is concerned, this game is related to that series in terms of superficial visuals only.

This game has evolved a lot sine it’s release, there’s still improvements to be made, but the developers turned this game in to a good direction. I look forward to replay this game each season and I dump from 60 to 100 hours each time.

There’s quite a lot of build diversity. Recently minion builds got buffed so if that’s your thing you can play that. You can play sword and shield crusader or equip it with flamethrower to give a little roast in the name of the Emperor. Maybe a tech priest with poisonous auto rifle that hits enemy and then spreads to it’s counterparts? Game offers total 4th classes.

Overall a perfectly solid ARPG. Better than most, in most ways.

The idea of you playing as an Inquisitor and not, as someone put it, a discount space marine as the gameplay suggest, is actually consistently integrated into the writing, so thumbs up for that. The story is above-average for a game. The mission scripting however is laughably bad - listen to a brief exchange with mission control, go from point A to point B, encounter villain, exchange threats, kill each other, repeat. In between A and B you kill a bunch of enemies. Sometimes they are cultists, sometimes rebels, sometimes aliens. But once you have done one mission in this game, you have done them all.

Brilliant game, one of my favourites of all time.

First let’s start with…

The single player campaign.

You play as a Captain of the Space Marines, who are some of the mightiest heroes of the Imperium of Man. And you can tell, not just from how powerful you are in combat, but from the way the world reacts to you - you are high status, and your presence brings hope. My favourite moment was when a wounded Imperial Guard guy slumped against the wall whispers “I got to see a Space Marine before the end” in almost religious awe, followed by a prayer to the Emperor to aid you. Really makes you want to go out and kick Ork ass for the little guys.

I really enjoy this game. It’s pretty much mindless fun most of the time. The game’s divided in 3 different game modes, or so I feel, let’s try to quickly analize each mode, shall we?

First, we got the single player campaign. The game stars Captain Titus, probably the only likable Ultramarine out there, in a short-ish action packed, VERY linear third person shooter campaign. The way it often goes is, move from point A to point B, reach a big arena where enemies try to bumrush you, kill everyone in there in the name of the Emperor, and move to the next arena, killing a few stray enemies on the way. You can carry 4 weapons at a time, not counting melee weapons, a pistol, a heavy weapon, a normal weapon, and a bolter. The weapons featured in the game are pretty much what you’d expect from the Spess Mahreens. You got a bolter, bolt pistol and a storm bolter, a heavy bolter, plasma cannon, gun and pistol, lascannon, VENGEANCE LAUNCHER (which is basically a stickybomb launcher), a melta (Which is pretty much a shotgun in this game. Why? I dunno), a stalker bolter, a chainsword, hammer, and power axe. Sadly, there are no lightning claws or power fists. In this game, there is no such thing as health regen or medkits, the enemies ARE the medkits. When you stun an enemy, either by bitchslapping them or hurting them enough, they are open for a brutal, awesome execution, which in turn, heals you. Did anybody say blood for the blood god?

TL;DR :

Overall, it’s a decent game with great visuals and works well as a “play for a couple hours at a sitting” arcade game. If you pay attention to the developing story, it gets a lot more interesting. Take the time to read everything; it’s worth it, and begs you to stick around for the next chapter. Some of the mission types are a little ugly and grinding, some are great, but in general it’s more fun than not.

Based on a board game from the 80s, Dark Future: Blood Red States is a tactical car combat strategy game set in the near future in an American wasteland ruled by a number of warring factions with armoured cars with big guns. The game consists of multiple seasons, with each season seeing you assume a new role fighting for or against these factions. With each season, you have a choice of missions to undertake, be it Escort missions, where you have to escort a vehicle a certain distance, or to just kill as many opponents as you can.
