Bullet Heaven 2

Bullet Heaven 2

Disclaimer: I played all of Matt’s games and was a big fan of Bullet Heaven 1.

Bullet Heaven 2 is an incredibly pretty Bullet Hell game full of content, and it comes packed with features to adjust the difficulty for any player. But at the end of the day, it is still a Bullet Hell game. If you don’t derive any enjoyment from moving your tiny hitbox (it’s one pixel) through intricate patterns of near-death, then this will game will quickly wear thin for you. If on the other hand you have even a passing interest in this genre or SHMUPs of any kind, you will definitely enjoy this game.

First of all, I played the hell out of the first Bullet Heaven (which, sadly, never made it to Steam), so, needless to say, I’ve been waiting for BH2 with bated breath. And it certainly delivered.

If I were to describe the game with one word, it would be satisfying. It took the very best features of the original and made them even better. More characters, more weapons, more BADA** BOSSES, longer levels and a bigger d**k But let’s look at things in a bit more detail.

We have 8 playable characters, each with a different play style and a bunch of weapons and costumes (those provide some minor bonuses) to boot. My personal favourites are Matt, Phyrnna and NoLegs (that kitty is OP as hell, btw). Making use of their strengths and avoiding their weaknesses is ESSENTIAL for surviving on difficulties other then Normal (though the final set of levels may argue with that - those are quite nightmarish even on Normal).

Neptunia Shooter

Neptunia Shooter

Steam is dumb and manichaean and doesn’t allow players to give a “Mixed” rating to a game, so I went for negative even though my opinion really is mixed.

Neptunia Shooter is a cute shmup spinoff the JRPG series that stars Neptune and pits you against several other characters in the franchise, who act as bosses. When you defeat one boss, they will join you and you will be able to switch bewteen all the characters you have.

Each one has a specific shot type (forward shot, backshot, charge shot, etc.) and most are useful in certain kind of scenarios so you’ll have to regularly switch between them during the stages or even the boss fights.

Surprisingly a lot of fun and challenging. I’m not the best at bullet hell games, but I am able to beat the first level without getting hit, the second I go on to the second level, it becomes harder for me to avoid anything.

  • There are only 6 stages in the game

  • Each time you defeat one of the bosses, you switch from controlling your current character into whoever the boss was.

  • Each character has a different shooting pattern with different ranges. Ex. Neptune shoots 3 bullets at a time straight ahead while Compa flings pills that fall downwards.

It’s super chaotic! Took a while to find out what the controls are but once I did I went destructo mode. If you like explosions and fast paced games, try this one out.

Snake2 has been a long time coming and it is rare for a game like this to deliver so hard and be so excellent. I believe it started development back in 1998 right after Snake released on Nokia phones. For decades I waited, I bought hundreds of gaming magazines over the years in hopes of seeing some kind of update on how it was going or when it would be released. Oh how the developers used to talk it up, “Snake 2 is coming and it will BITE your socks off.” Suffice to say: I NEEDED. SNAKE 2. I pre-ordered it right away. But the wait was agonizing. Years passed and I heard nary a peep about Snake 2 development. I became jaded, I felt betrayed, I never thought they would finish it, and if they did finish it there was no way it could live up to the pure vision and bombast of the original. Had I been played like a fool? Was it never coming…?

Even though I’ve yet to 1CC the game, i can strongly recommend it for any fan of shooting games (shmups), because this is made by a developer who knows what makes one good.

I love the look and music. I’m not the best shoot em up player. This one is challenging to me. I like how in cooperative you get some ships again at the start of the next level if you die but the other player makes it. When levels are unlocked you can start from further levels. Worth the price. Probably worth more than the price I paid.

Blorks: The Quest for Magnesium

Blorks: The Quest for Magnesium is an intense bullet-hell shooter with psychedelic aesthetics reminiscent of late 90s console titles.

  • Enjoy a swanky chiptune soundtrack by Blackbella

I’m one of the developers for this game; I produced the game, put together the overall design vision, and programmed the bullet patterns. This project was an incredible learning experience, and I’m thankful to my team for making it such a fun and fulfilling time. It was my very first game project, and very much a passion project.

Things that went well:

  • For a six-week project between three freshman-level developers, I’m proud of how much we squeezed into the game.

  • The game is extremely short, but is a complete experience. The player can win and lose, and there is a progression in difficulty (if imperfect).

Review

I really liked the music a real piano bop and the game itself it’s challenging and I’m glad the game gives you a reason to play through with no continues. Normal mode is definitely manageable, but it’s still challenging enough it’s pretty rewarding when you beat it on normal with no continues. Legendary is beyond my skill level, but normal is pretty user friendly and if you really struggle you can use continues to make the game beatable by everyone you only get the best ending with no continues though. Definitely recommend a solid free to play that lets you practice/test your bullet hell skills

Nice tiny bullet-hell. Nothing groundbreaking, but fine and neat. The game is quite hardcore at high difficulty levels.

I’m not a big enthusiasthic about danmaku shmups, however I think this game is gonna make me enjoy the genre more and more from now on. Very simplistic but pleasing to the eye graphics, a great soundtrack and a tight gameplay.

I don’t think I’ll get good enough to finish the game on “Nightmare” difficulty any time soon, but one day I might get lucky and destroy the Gnuferno once and for all! 💣🐃💥

its a pretty good and well polished game. the only flaw i have is that you are overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to learn when you start. perhaps a tutorial level where you could try out and practice those mechanics would be good. but apart from that great game. by the way, what engine / language did you use to make the game?
