Arc Apellago

Arc Apellago

I have gone through this game 3 times so far (twice by myself and another one by watching a friend experience it after I recommended it). It is a short project but what is here signals the beginning of something great. The developers have another game under their belt that released prior to this (DeltaBlade 2700, it’s pretty good) but in comparison Arc Apellago is very much the first note you hear on a music piece.

You can go back in the history of every game developer and by experiencing their list of gaming projects, sooner or later you stumble upon one of them where you feel like something clicked, like this was the true origin of everything else that came afterwards. That’s how this game feels to me. It is not complex, if anything it takes one concept and executes it really well, one can surely compare it to the things you would discover during the golden era of Flash games.

This game has beautiful visuals, a great soundtrack and very fun game play. Handshake Firm is an extremely talented group of developers and I hope they make another game like this but with more devs and a higher budget. Easily one of the best F2P side-scroller games on Steam. My only qualm with this game is that it’s extremely short. If you want to play something new and finish the game fast, this game is for you. These people have great potential and I’m hopeful for something longer in the future.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection

Played this a lot on the Switch, and am gladly going to play it even more on PC. If you have a high tolerance for frustration and can laugh at both your own stupid mistakes and some downright mean BS the game will throw your way (mostly difficulty, but some cheap traps as well), I believe you’ll have an absolute blast playing this. It’s quite a rollercoaster of intense excitement, intense frustration and intense satisfaction.

The GnG series was always quite unique due to how well it evoked a feeling of fumbling or panic with its design and mechanics. No matter how well you know a level and how good of a plan you have, things always go very wrong very quickly, and you will be forced to quickly make some hard decisions or die. This aspect of the games was always the main source of excitement, satisfaction and humor. GnG Resurrection doubles down on this exact element and ramps it up more than any previous game in the series.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins is back and it’s harder than ever! Having played four games in this series I was convinced that I was more-than-ready to tackle its hardest difficulty (Legend) for my first playthrough, oh how wrong I was. Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection (GnGR) is best described as a remake+. It borrows heavily from the gameplay, enemies, levels, music, and more from the first two games but also contains new content that fits in with what the original games established. GnGR features four returning stages that are significantly longer and play completely differently as well as three brand new stages.

I have been fighting an uphill battle with depression and PTSD since i saw my comrades fall in the Vietnam War. Then i found this game. It cured all mental illness i had and it made my dad come back from the milk store after 13 years. Absolutely beautiful. Deep story, Awesome character design and one of the best soundtracks i ever heard. This game can easily defeat games like Fortnite, Minecraft and COD.

Survive in 10 completely different environments packed with mutant monsters and deadly traps with the help of a multitude of guns and various crafts, including a mech, a sub and a starship.

STORY

It’s year 21XX. You command the Gemini 2 team - a commando unit made up of tough war veterans commissioned by the V-corp, a mega mining corporation. Your task: shed light on strange events that are happening on Frontier Horizon - a small isolated asteroid squeezed in between Mars and Jupiter, and housing a mining station owned by the V-corp.

A new biological organism recently found on the surface of the asteroid, known as “the agent” is able to interact with every element of an ecosystem and change it at its will, taking full control of the organisms. Most of the mineworkers have mutated into horrible monsters, and the scientific team who made this discovery has taken refuge in the tunnels below Frontier Horizon.

Take control of the Gemini II squad by choosing your favourite hero from 8+ and swapping them as needed during this adventure. I bought this as a streamer friend is doing a speedrun race. Given it’s name I assumed it was going to be a bit silly but I was pleasantly surprised!

The game is a short platformer, it took me about 2.5 hours to 100% it, with an great mix of breezy quite easy levels and more challenging areas. The platforming feels tight but it’s kept simple, with the variety of challenges coming from the environment.

There’s not too much to say about this game but if you’re a fan of platformers I’d recommend it!

Beard Blade

Beard Blade

This game is really fun and hopefully doesn’t fall under the radar. I learned to speedrun it and will run it as a speedrun, but will write an objective review with a more casual experience in mind. I think the strong pros:

  • Beautiful sprites and music. The game looks and sounds genuinely pleasant, and there doesn’t sound or look like anything is out of place. You can tell a lot of legwork went into polishing this aesthetically.

  • Controls are solid and ask exactly what you want them to do. Branson feels and controls great. I had no issues when it came to having inputs eaten, for example, and every death I took, was completely my fault.

Real player with 189.8 hrs in game

Loved every moment of this game! The Level designs were unique, and the graphics really hit that Super FX2 chip nostalgia I get from playing Yoshi’s Island. The platforming really felt like a hybrid of Mega Man, and Donkey Kong Country Games. The up beat chiptune music was top notch, Can’t wait to hear the first Ocremix of them. The controls are hella tight, and responsive. If you’re one of the few that’s complaining about them, either you have joystick drift, or you’re probably not as good at the game as you think you are… If you’re good, you can rush through the game in about 2 hours, but if you’re actually going for 100% completion, it’s more like 7.(When you’re not cheating with a guide) I wanted to review the game sooner, since I purchased day 1, but was stuck at 99% completion since day 2, until a patch they released today that allowed me to finally get the last card that wasn’t spawning. Anyways, this is one of my favourite games now. I hadn’t felt like I truly played a game that emulates a SNES game until playing Beard Blade, so thank you to the developers for giving me a nostalgic feeling I haven’t been able to have in a little over 20 years.

BROTHER!!! Save him! - Hardcore Platformer

BROTHER!!! Save him! - Hardcore Platformer

I’ve played quite a few horrible platformers, and while this one doesn’t take the cake for the worst one, it’s certainly close. You’d better be ready to be as precise as a needle to even be able to navigate the tight spaces in the maps and hope you don’t get flattened by a random lightening fasst spike ball which is almost impossible to time. And when you’re done being as perfect as possible in the levels prepare for the almost completely RNG based final boss and hope by the 20th attempt you don’t get fucked over by 3 fire ball clusters that make it impossible to dodge.

Nah, stay away. I am actually a bit into hardcore platformering and since there was at least one mild recommendation I thought I give it a spin. Unfortunately, it’s totally not worth it. BROTHER!!! Save him! is a sloppy mess, controls are bad, collision detection is just awful, I hate the sfx/music (this kind of chip tunes are not my thing, some might like it), graphics are near trash-level (or the kind of graphics that you get in a $2.50 browser game asset bundle, I suppose?). The level design is very uninspired (the super fast moving critters are the worst) and random. Heck, I do not even feel much rewarded by beating a level because everything is so generic. 1.5/5 at best.
