I’m going to give my thoughts on the game as a whole and further down there will be a section addressing people who are having a hard time with this game.

The Game

First off, I love the aesthetics of this game. It has a strange, abstract, almost dreamlike feel to it while also having lore that suggests that this is a world with a history. Something I appreciate is that the game is weird, but it doesn’t feel quirky. The stereo has a nice selection of songs that range from chill to unsettling which helps set the mood for both the horror focused levels and the platforming focused levels.

Honestly, this game has so much love and effort put into it. Sure the movement may be a little wonky at times, but it’s a new game and still a little rough around the edges. I highly recommend this if you’re into weird movement mechanics, difficult platforming, and a horror experience that just straight makes my, (and hopefully your) skin crawl.

I really enjoyed the game. It doesn’t have jump scares yet, it builds tension with the environment. Def got me jumping a few times. If you’re interested in seeing what this game is about, check out my video!

This game is like pressing your nose inside of an opossum’s crack. It’s boring beyond belief and has absolutely no merit.

A literally empty experience which leaves you wondering why the dev even bothered.

This game is tripe. I spent nearly 40 minutes very slowly trudging from room to room with no idea what I was meant to be doing. Putting aside the bad english translations which I could get the jist of, there is still no coherent plot or instructions. The controls are terrible, you move glacially slowly and you spend forever waiting for dialogue boxes to close trying to open doors and explore. I think this game is a big maze of number-matching item fetch quests and as it takes about 10 minutes waiting for you character to move from one side of the map to the other at snails pace, frankly life is too short.

Fumiko!

Fumiko!

As far as platfromers go this one is quite unique and extraordinary. First off its 3D, usually we have 2D pixel platformers, but with Fumiko we have a beautiful but abstract environment.

The game looks and feels great, it handles pretty well and every minute spent ingame is a joyous one, this game really is a unique platformer well worthy of it’s price tag.

The backstory or actual story of the game is rather complex and as you play it it starts to make sense to you, first off you play as a Female A.I who doesn’t know who she is where she is or what her purpose is, and that is where a fun feature comes in, something not always present with platformer, exploration; To put it simple it’s pure fun and entertaining. our region is some form of virtual security network mainframe that we get to explore, a lot of detail and creativity went into creating the perfect atmosphere really going the extra mile to present us with a form of authentic of what it would be like to explore a system in such a sense. The music really adds to every function of the game, enhancing it and setting a tone that really just soothes you into the game.

Where to start? The art. The aesthetic. Fumiko! is at once a simplicity and a pleasure to behold. Its low-poly style conveys exactly as much as it needs to, and its vibrant colors illuminate the world in a beautiful and satisfying way.

Meanwhile, the music is always on point to convey a great sense of atmosphere. Are things chill? Got it. Panicked? Also got it. Focused? Warm? Somber? Check, check, check.

The story is revealed in bits and pieces, sometimes through collectibles called memory fragments, other times through dialogue, sometimes simply through the aesthetic of each world. It is chilling, disturbing, familiar. It conveys grand and simple ideas in their turn. It asks the hard questions. It presses us about identity, artificiality, alienation, will, and many others.

Control:Override

Control:Override

Control:Override is a puzzle platformer with a unique and mind twisting mechanics that tests your understanding and imagination at each corner, even in its story.

As consumers, lets cut straight to the chase, do you get your money’s worth with the release price of 3 dollars?

Yes, and more - now to the review.

Gameplay…

… Is where the game shines, it begins with single mechanics, then it hits the player with a combination of them where every level is memorable.

Good, unique little puzzle platformer. Controls were frustrating when I was trying to rush through things, but are manageable if you take your time. The rewind system works really well and lets you trial-and-error out solutions. Puzzles are a little on the easy side, but there are a few head-scratchers in there. Definitely worth a play-through!

The Miserable Crimson Hooded Girl

The Miserable Crimson Hooded Girl

Crimson Hood is a miserable girl. She is separated from her loving mother due to mommy being unwell, and is sent away to go stay with her grandmother in her strange house deep within the woods. Crimson Hood needs to be careful however, as residing in these woods is the Gobbler, a monster who preys upon the weak. Follow her quiet tale, that descends into the unthinkable, where innocence is soiled and shadows stir.

A reimagining of the classic dark fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, and it’s various versions, most notably the Italian story, “The False Grandmother,” that’s over 1100 years old.

  • Featuring a unique style that takes you on a journey into a dark fairytale.

  • A strong foreboding atmosphere that doesn’t rely on cheap scares to unnerve you.

  • Reimagining of a classic story, the horror and human elements brought to the forefront and filtered through a modern lens.

  • Things are not how they seem.

  • An experience that may stick with you.

The Queen of Crows stared sadly at the girl, for she knew this would be the last time she ever lay eyes on her…

This is one of those games that I wish Steam had a rating for in the middle. I definitely don’t think that it deserves a thumbs down, though. The game itself is very odd and trippy to say the very least. I really enjoyed that aspect and some of the graphics were surprisingly really well done (such as the meat in the meat room). The story was pretty simple and didn’t really go much in-depth, although the player can get the gist of what’s happening and why. I did like the premise of it. I wasn’t really that much of a fan of the ending, though with how weird the game got, I’m not quite sure what I was expecting.

So…I’m sort of on the fence here. The world is surreal and weird…and I like that. The puzzles aren’t exactly difficult…they’re more of the “backtrack to take an item you found to somewhere else” type deal. Not the end of the world…not great either. Visuals are great for the most part.

I did unfortunately encounter a game-ending bug. The main mechanic here is jumping between two alternate worlds. When I did so, I got caught up in some furniture and couldn’t move. When I jumped back to reposition…I was now stuck there in furniture as well. With no save points and no way to reset your position…I would’ve had to restart.

My Hole is a Mouth of Dirt

My Hole is a Mouth of Dirt

‘We lose ourselves in the things we love. We find ourselves there too.’ - Kirstin Martz

In this surreal psychological horror made in RPGmaker MV, Mole enters a tunnel complex under the premise he is being guided by God to complete a purpose during the ‘Endtimes’. Throughout Mole’s time spent down there we see him seeking out the Voice to direct him and, it is here, we see the mental journey being taken until Mole is finally ‘told’ what he must do by the Voice which is to bring a baby to Him. It is this task that enables Mole to confront struggles & overcome challenges in order to complete this Purpose.

I feel physically sick after playing this because of how involved I got and how badly the jumpscares got me, and I think this is worth a shot, however I do have some notes:

  • The speed: I get giving a run option would mean rethinking a lot of the chase parts, but it was kind of frustrating in some points.

  • The music: I’d never recommend lyrics AND writing you have to read and understand (it’s not accessible for many people), and some of the music felt particularly out of place - in particular, the jukebox was playing something too cheery. It was not bad, just weird.

Loved the game. Found it by chance and had it on my wish list. It’s decent for the price if the game hasn’t been spoiled for you already. I love the sense of dread and the ending. I mean I don’t love it I hate it but still!

This game is honestly grinding on your nerves…

Slow movement, confusing quests & scripts, the energy limit that basically soft locks your game and forces you to start over from the previous save once you used up the energy and hence unable to proceed through triggering conversations.

You can’t talk to the NPCs in the game when you have no energy left, or do any actions other than entering different rooms.

The game is also quite buggy in times where you have scenes suddenly being jerked across the screen before settling down and allowing a go at the minigames.
