Der Geisterjäger / The Ghost Hunter

Der Geisterjäger / The Ghost Hunter

You know the expression “handling something with kid gloves”?

Yeah, Der Geisterjäger does - except its “kid gloves” are boxing gloves with horseshoes in them.

Basically, DGJ is a mecha dungeon crawler that not only isn’t afraid of being “unfair”, it actually incorporates savescumming as a canonical ability for your main character - something like precognition from Katana Zero, if you will. “This is only a dream” is a sentence that, if you, like me, are not a particularly sharp tactical mind, you’ll get used to seeing. A lot.

Der Geisterjager is a lot like Der Geisterturm, but better in every way. More enemy variety, interesting environmental challenges, and new hazards to deal with that aren’t mines. Along with quality of life improvements you should expect from continued development.

The single most important change is the addition of the credit system, you gain money for killing enemies now and the credits allow you upgrade your RCS as you see fit at repair stations dotted about the dungeons, creating an agency that the previous two games lacked while providing a much greater replay value.

This is a nice game, you build your empire by constructing and upgrading buildings, building up defences, expanding your empire to other planets/locations… You can get sucked in really fast if you like this type of games, which is my case… but if you are going to play this game be aware of something that is most likely to happen to you especially if you are playing it to play along side work.

Admins are playing the game.

Attacks will always take 100% of the enemy resources (if the army capacity is enough to take all)

CELLAR | Rags and Knife

CELLAR | Rags and Knife

This is an odd little roguelike. It’s a very zoomed in map that is on screen and the aesthetic is very lofi pixelart with letters for the monsters. It’s kind of ASCII plus but barely plus. There’s some cool music that sounds like it came from a niche 1970s horror film.

I’m not sure how much procedural generation there is in the levels. There seems at least to be several set areas like the start and an area later with a fight in progress before you get there.

There’s different weapons to pick up and armour- just one armour for the whole body like “hoody” or “rags”. The weapons break. When you kill stuff you get xp and when you level up you can pick one of two skills.

As far as weird games goes it definitely up there. It’s very simple and easy to play,

Apollyon: River of Life

Apollyon: River of Life

This is great game, a hidden gem, It draws you in with what seems on the surface to be a card / table strategy game, but soon reveals a rich fantasy story behind the events in the game. The game board has 16 mystical themes, but the “Theme” of the game is an intriguing mix of Cthulhu-like horror and seance-like summoning. It has elements of a choose-your-adventure but goes beyond that with the strategic selection of tokens influencing the outcomes. The game table itself is beautiful and card art captivating to say the least. After playing it for near 100 hours I have learned many techniques to stay alive, yet am constantly surprised by new invocations (stories). Exactly like a great novel, I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Army of Tentacles: (Not) A Cthulhu Dating Sim: Black GOAT of the Woods Edition

I´ve seen this game come up along with some others when I was looking for certain tags.

I looked at it but was not sure if it´s going to be good or not by the pictures you get on the shop page.

However, it got recommended to me and so I finally decided to buy it.

Started it without neither knowing what type of game it is (expected it to be a visual novel) nor what´s going to await

me anyways…

However… starting to play I can say this game is hughe fun. You meet a lot of different characters / creatures.

Humanity was destined to fall. Your people, the Great Old Ones, were legends among the humans. Tales were told about their might, and whispers rose of how they would one day claim the entire human planet as their own. Of how mankind would simply go insane at the very sight of their malevolent beauty. Finally, the day came for the armies of the unspeakable horrors to rise.

Like, that was it, though. They got their butts kicked. Humanity won. Somehow. It was really, really embarrassing.

Play as a young monster who has only ever known life under human rule. Between finals for University and figuring out who to take to the winter prom, not to mention memorizing your lines for the big school play, you already have a lot of pressure to deal with. Now add the destiny of freeing the Dreamlands from an occupying army. That’s rough. In addition to the school year, now you have this whole giant RPG adventure to go on, complete with quests and stats and skills and party members and blah blah blah!

  • Word Battles: Combat done via dialogue, with topics ranging from jokes to philosophy to how much wood could a Woodchuck chuck

  • A party of millions except not!: Recruit a varied group of outcasts that will provide hilarious commentary to life and situations! As well as help you out in Word Battles! They all have different skills! Yay, teamwork!

    • STATS!: People love those!

    • A stand alone Army of Tentacles game that could be played either as a sequel to the prior ones in the series or as its own thing

    • RPG/Visual Novel hybrid action! Well, Word Battles. But action!
