STARBO - The Story of Leo Cornell

STARBO - The Story of Leo Cornell

Excellent atmosphere and dreamy setting. Powerful sound effects and music used well. Story itself? Kind of David Lynchian tale, like a dream sequence, lots of questions with no answers. Some people despise that kind of story, some people love that kind of story - I belong to the latter group. Only two major downsides I’d say:

  1. Game length - surprisingly short, could/should had been notably longer

  2. No option of loading / resuming a game - gotta finish the tale in one session

I played the game through in two sessions, as I didn’t know I couldn’t resume / load a game. In first session I played perhaps 20% of the game, and from start to finish in the second session. As it’s a short story, replay value is not too good, either. About 10 euros price tag felt afterwards bit too much, perhaps 5 euros would had been more fitting.

I bought this game yesterday before going to sleep and had a dream i reviewed it, so I’m reviewing it.

STARBO is an hour long walking simulator that offers a very dream-like experience meant to be played through in one sitting, that you really shouldn’t get if you have photosensitive epilepsy or if flashing bright lights bother you. There are no weapons to pick up or combat, no stealth. Just walking, running, occasionally picking up keys to open locked doors so you can continue to run and a puzzle.

Bot Colony

Bot Colony

Bot Colony is an ambitious title, maybe even too ambitious for what it’s worth. So far, playing it is more of a struggle than entertainment…

I am aware that Bot Colony is an Early Access Game, but still, this build is not playable by far. I’m afraid i wouldn’t even be wrong if i would say that there is literally almost nothing in Bot Colony that works as it should… Let’s start with the game’s motto: “The Game You Speak With”. This is the main reason why anybody would pay attention to it, but unfortunately in the end the player will find out that this is actually “The Game Which Doesn’t Understand You”. That’s it. I’ve said it. Natural language understanding is just not ready to be implemented in a game. It wil get you right about one time out of ten. Other then that you’ll get replies like “I don’t know what you mean”.

Review after June 18 major upgrade

Introduction

Bot Colony is an ambitious title, aiming to provide a non-scripted story by allowing you to freely converse with robots. If you enjoyed literary works like ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’, Isaac Asimov’s Robot series, movies like ‘Space Oddysey 2001’(not one of my favorites though) or Anime like ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and ‘Psycho-Pass’, you’ll find a similar setting here.

An important remark is that most of the gameplay is text (or speech) conversations, which at times can be both agitating and humorous, and that might not appeal to everyone.

Vektor Wars

Vektor Wars

My first encounter with non-educational gaming came in the form of “Battlezone”, sometime in the early 90’s, on my grandpa’s Packard Bell with Prodigy Internet.

Windows 3.1 contained a suite of arcade classics, consisting of such titles as Centipede, Asteroids, Tempest, and so on. But Battlezone was the only one that hit me in the heart. That’s because I WAS the shooter, and every enemy projectile was a take on my life, and not the life of some idiot I was looking down on.

This game is Battlezone on crack cocaine.

woefully obsolete/misinformed; fun simple game that has a tendency to be reduced to combing the map for collectibles while kiting enemies.

Ladders are broken.

Walk into them while looking up.

This review was negative because I consistently encountered ladders that would not let me climb them. Though I did encounter one of those “camera-lock and teleported away” glitches (from an enemy exploding too close this time, not a ladder), I made it to level 3 in one sitting.

The game is fun and hearkens back to th’old days (of which I wasn’t a part). There are collectibles and weapons strewn about the level. One of those collecitbles - Robodudes - is dynamic, as in they run around the level. Grab them when you see them.

Kenshō

Kenshō

Kenshō is a tile-sliding match3 puzzle done right:

  • Simple enough that anyone can play it. No need for complicated tutorials.

  • It is aesthetically pleasing, beautiful even and the soundtrack is great.

  • New elements are introduced on every level. The game eventually becomes challenging, but very forgiving. If you fail a level, the tiles get reset but you don’t lose your progress.

  • Just the right length to feel that you got your money worth but short enough without becoming a chore. The levels are randomized so you can replay them as much as you want or don’t if you don’t want to. There are no unnecessary achievements or goals to force you to keep playing over and over.

It’s a good game. When I finally understood everything about this game, it became immensely more satisfying to solve. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, and is incredibly well-priced. Personally, though, I think it would be best played on mobile devices, especially considering the lack of uncapped FPS and edge-aliasing. All in all, though, this is a little gem that needs more attention.

Dizzee Rascal… That’s who I think of when I play this.

The classic, eclectic, UK urban electro music ebbs and throbs relentlessly; commanding attension while you tightly weave through the madcap, claustrophobic arenas of baddies and laser trip wires. BONKERS

It’s manic, rude and …technical, just like that singer.

Drones has a very cool sprite based 3d trickery that is 100% pulled off. That stuff always impresses me.

I’m not amazing at these games at all and the addition of little tips in between levels brings you up to scratch on the best way’s to herd enemies into your smart bombs.

the bosses suck. who ever designed them is mentally retarded.

Real player with 12.5 hrs in game

Overall I liked it a lot but it does have a few (very) rough edges. Shmup combined with metroidvania should be self-explanatory but what drew me to the game was tactical combat where you get slower while attacking, there are timed dodges and there are abilities that use the same resource bar as dodges. That makes it a solid foundation for some good bullet hell. Most of the bosses are very well designed and you get rewarded for exploration handsomely, with equippable accessories that modify your ship in various ways. Unfortunately there are a few issues I’ve had with it:
