Flow

Flow

Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2

So this is yet another meditation app for VR. This one uses short looping stereoscopic 360 videos. Unfortunately, this means there are no interactions and you’re only using your motion controllers to select items from the menu.

This is free at the moment with several meditations to enjoy, from calm to focused to more intense. You can also buy some DLC. However, there’s mention of a registration and subscription plan in the future. I’m not sure this experience is premium enough to warrant that, of course, Flow EHF is free to do whatever they want to monetize their product. I just don’t think it would be successful.

Flow is not a game. It’s a bunch of VR videos and some hippy soundtracks to aid in meditation. There’s no gameplay loops, there’s no gameplay or meaningful interaction.

It’s intended to be a paid/subscription kind of service but seems to have been abandoned prior to that. That doesn’t stop the developers trying to scam the hippies for this non-game, there’s a whopping $20 worth of predatory DLC.

To paraphrase PT Barnam, there’s a hippy born every minute, and two to take ‘em.

Anyway, this is not a game, despite being erroneously published as a game, cannot be recommended as one.

animARide

animARide

AnimARide software allows users to upgrade any real-life captured panoramic video into an AR animated experience by using motion file from the video to animate different 3D elements inside the movie. Choose from a wide range of animARide’s pre-installed cockpits and set up individual motion characteristics such as incline of the cockpit, shake intensity, shadow positioning, and a lot more, to create your own AR animated experiences.

AR content production has never been so simple as with our unique technology. AnimARide animates different elements inside the video including the chosen cockpit, speedometer and tachometer, steering wheel and joystick, transmission stick, and a lot more. No manual animation needed.

Create new Supercar or Space Bike adventures using your own panoramic videos.

Upgrade your panoramic video with 3D augmented reality elements animated with animARide software.

Enjoy the highest video quality with resolution up to 8K, 60fps using animARide’s player that is optimized for GPU rendering.

Are you a motion simulator user? Just install our plugin and animARide will work as a 5D cinema with your motion seat. animARide synchronously transfers 6DOF data to SimTools at 100Hz.

How it works:

  • Capture any video using a panoramic camera.

  • In case you have GoPro Fusion or GoPro MAX, just record the video. For all other types of cameras, use iOS app animARide MVC , to record the motion together with the video.

  • Export the video as a mp4 file, H.265(HEVC) preferred.

  • Get motion data from your raw GoPro movie file using our Parser & Editor application. Save as a separate .4dr file.

  • The movie file in .mp4 and the motion file in .4dr should have the same name and should be located in the same folder.

  • Upload movie file in animARide and run.

  • Adjust cockpit position using sliders.

  • Adjust sun direction and intensity for correct rays and shadows.

  • Adjust motion and shake intensity.

  • Adjust rendering quality, depending on GPU power level.

  • If desired, you can save your individual settings for the ride into a separate .INI file.

  • Choose your role in the car: a driver or a passenger with professional driver.

  • Choose between 6 Supercar cockpits or 5 Space Bikes, while running the video.

  • Record upgraded adventure into a 4K resolution 16:9 video file that is ready for sharing.

Software has been tested with Oculus Rift CV1, HTC Vive Pro, Samsung Odyssey +, PiMax 5K +, PiMax 8K, desktop non VR and is suitable for all of the above.

Works with any kind of input control: keyboard and mouse, VR controllers. Customizable controller and keyboard hotkeys.

Once Upon a Sea

Once Upon a Sea

Once Upon a Sea is a poetic, interactive XR documentary telling the tragic tale of the legendary Dead Sea. Through a physical exploration of the sea’s forbidden, moonlike landscapes, to intimate encounters with local characters, the user gets a rare glimpse into one of the world’s most dangerous, soon to be extinct, wonders. Centuries of human intervention and political neglect have turned the Dead Sea into a precarious place. Its water levels have dropped dramatically, leaving behind sinkholes and collapsing beaches. The experience offers a deep insight into the complexity and very human impact of this ecological and geopolitical crisis. Once Upon a Sea is our call to action.

The Great C

The Great C

This short adventure cinematic is well-made, though it has some of that “indie” charm to remind that it has been made by a small team of enthusiasts, rather than a heavy-hitter like ILMxLab. Most of the characters’ animations are motion-captured performances, though there are plenty of character movements that are stilted and robotic, which were obviously manually-animated. The characters are cartoony, but expressive. And don’t let the character designs fool you… this story is not for young children.

Real player with 0.8 hrs in game

Not quite long enough to be called a movie and not quite short enough as the Google spotlight shorts. At 38 minutes long it’s almost as long as an episode of most series.

The story is good and the actors are quite believable. Graphically it looks a lot like Telltale (rip) games. Which kinda makes me sad that I’ll never see that studio dive into VR.

VR cinematic experiences are quite new and there is a lot of experimentation involved. Some of it really works, like the building case scene, where trying to follow both characters creates tension, or the final confrontation, where the scale of C really can be appreciated. Some of it doesn’t, like suddenly you feel like an ant watching giants and the next moment a giant watching ants. But that cam be expected in such a new medium.

The Patcher: The 1st Open Beta

The Patcher: The 1st Open Beta

“The Patcher” is a full-scale tactical multi-player action VR game.

Be strong! Be ambitious!

You must choose a faction – either ‘Junkmol’ or ‘Skymagg’ – as a Patcher of the Neo JS City. By fighting numerous battles, you will obtain weapons, revamp them, and gain experience. Every weapon and skill have degree of proficiency as you play, so you’ll get stronger as you level up.

Hybrid Multi-play

Don’t forget that you’re one of the factions, even if you fight against monsters on the battlefield. Cooperate with your fellow Patchers! If you succeed in defeating a mighty monster with others, you might get a chance to obtain a rare item. However, when you come across an opponent of the other faction, it’s best to attack right away or retreat and bring in your allies. Your instant decision is critical in each battle.

Various Game Modes

The war between two factions ends only when one side ultimately falls. Get ready for the best result!

  • ‘Deathmatch’: Create a party to fight the other faction.

  • ‘Conquest War’: Occupy the enemy’s territories for as long as possible, by any means.

  • ‘Boss Raid’: Defeat the giant boss with your party members. However, you’re not the only hunters there. Compete with the other faction for the throat of the boss.

Strategic Action Combat

Since the past, the Patchers have fought strategically with three weapons: a sword, gun, and bow. Of course, each weapon has its own characteristics, but you must find which one works best for you and become skillful at using it. The weight, reach, accuracy, and control of each weapon is vastly different and is key to your tactics.

The Storyline of “the Patcher”

_‘Neo JS City’ was once the most beautiful city, and there was a reason for it. The upper classes wanted to get rid of anything they saw as dirty and trivial. That’s why they decided to move all the unpleasant facilities – like the sewage treatment plant and the prison – underground.

Meanwhile, some people illegally and secretly settled in these underground facilities. Their habitation was called the ‘Patch Build’, and they called themselves the ‘Patchers’.

But the environment around the Patch Build was more severe than they expected. Survival got harder and harder. This caused a rupture in the community. Some said pioneering a new land for a better future was be the way to go. Others wanted to stick to the existing land and refine what they already had.

Now, you must follow one of them – and choose your fate!_

Experience the Energy: Take the Tour

Experience the Energy: Take the Tour is a free VR experience about the Oil and natural gas industry in Canada. It worked on my system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. You can do this one sitting in center of your play area. The energy industry is funding this to recruit workers.

Try this, if you are interested in learning about the Oil industry.

Oddly I preferred this non-interactive video experience more than the interactive mini-game one. Mainly because they are both not very scintillating topics. I mean, it’s kind of interesting, but not like videos about jungle animals or cool space stuff. It’s the energy industry preaching to you. It has marvelous video quality though. It’s so high you can’t really tell if it’s monoscopic or not.

Unfortunately, Steamworks has decided to inexplicably censor this 6DoF interactive VR. If you want to support queer content and voices, please let Steam know of your displeasure. Queerskins: ARK is a 6DoF interactive virtual reality experience. Reading a diary left by the estranged son, a Catholic mother (Hadley Boyd) finds a way to transcend herself and her grief by imagining him alive and in love. With heart-wrenching performances by Michael DeBartolo and Christopher Vo in volumetric video and the storytelling potential of spatial sound, Ark allows you to enter her imagination and co-create the lovers’ intimate dance through your body position and movements. An Intel Studios Original co-produced with Cloudred.

The Attic

The viewer finds herself in a dimly lit attic bedroom, a place that seems to be stuck in time, heavy with memory. Here, you assume the passive role of an observer in a 360˚ environment. Unable to move, you can examine the memorabilia-laden surroundings and begin to get an idea of time, place and what the story might be about. Mary-Helen begins reading her son’s diary.

El Matador

As Mary-Helen begins to imagine her son’s world, you are transported to a beautiful beach at dawn. Sebastian and his lover Alex appear, like a daydream nearby in the landscape. We allow Sebastian to break the 4th wall and directly implicate you in the scene. We position you quite close to the two men, just outside their personal space as you listen to their conversation. As Mary-Helen finds freedom in her imagination, you too now have the freedom to move around the beach as the experience transforms into 6DoF.

The Memory

The scene crossfades to an abstraction of the beach. Sebastian and Alex begin an intimate dance. Depending on how you move in the space, the dancers appear to respond to your presence. The performance has been choreographed as a series of segments, each visitor sees only 5 out of possible 24 combinations within each play session. Replay it to see other potential variations, follow the blue glowing lights to hear Mary-Helen reading Sebastian’s diary entries. Raise both arms to gain a new perspective, point your arms forward to fly!

Back in the Attic

As the lovers fade away, you are now back in the attic. It is the magic hour. The room is lit with a flat, golden light, reminiscent of the light on the beach. With a return of detail and color, it feels like the room has come back to life. Mary-Helen contemplates her new found sense of self.

Note

Queerskins: ARK is a room scale experience. It can be adjusted for available space:

— Small (10’x10’ / 3x3 m)

— Medium (20’x20’ / 6x6 m) — Default

— Large (30’x30’ / 9x9 m)

Subtitles are available in English, Spanish, Italian and Polish. Subtitles can only be set at the beginning of the experience by using your controller or by pressing corresponding keys on your keyboard. Please see the experience splash screen for details.

Virtual Home Theater Video Player

I can’t believe I haven’t written a review yet. As you see from my over 300 hours of usage that I use this exclusively. I purchased this when it was more expensive and never regretted it. I never got it for the audio aspect although it is impressive. I got it for the 3D movie playback. The MAIN thing that drove my interest is that I did not have to use my controllers at all. I could do everything I wanted with the mouse. Trust me this is way more relaxing. I have had many many email conversations with Aurel the developer about features and getting help. I don’t think it is possible to get someone nicer and more hard working. I have had a number of suggestions that without hesitation were implemented in updates. I know there are more things to come as well so if you are on the fence, get this and you won’t be sorry

The only app that can play non head locked surround sound video with hardware decoded video, i tested it against all other players (deovr, whirligig, big screen etc), only virtual desktop come close (with it’s virtual sound drivers enabled), but still not as good, lots of parameters in VHT that you can adjust to your own like.

Of course the complicated and let’s be honest, rather ugly, GUI is the draw back. I would love the 3D model cinema enviroment (best ones are those in virtual desktop workshop),

The Holy City

The Holy City

This is an amazing tool for anyone curious to learn more about Jerusalem and the many religions that coexist in this fantastic place. Very well executed. I have to say it’s very unusual for me to review projects. This because very few actually wow me to the point of actually wanting to share it with others…. This is an amazing experience that allows you to feel like you can touch the Holy Sepulcher and place a note on the Western Wall. Just fantastic. I know this is a virtual visit- but the fact the places were scanned from real life really makes me appreciate the accuracy and be able to enjoy looking at each location at my own pace. Throughout this journey I really enjoyed seeing the beautiful realistic-looking recreation of many Jerusalem temples that allowed me to freely look around and spend a lot of time inspecting painting and inscriptions on the walls. When it switched from the interactive gamefied version to the 360 video version was totally amazing to recognize the precise location where the camera was placed and enjoy seeing it filled with real people. I hope to see more soon.
