Queerskins: a love story

Queerskins: a love story

This left a bad taste in my mouth.

There just wasn’t enough time for reflection or enough moments to challenge the perspective that is being driven into us (that being Gay is wrong because it is against God). I suspect (hope) the intention was to prompt reflection and thought, but in a 15 minute 360 video, there is no opportunity for this, and the developers don’t fuel it at all.

The result, whether intentional or not, is a mess of bigotry and “cruel and irreligious piety.” I hate this. It should be withdrawn until it can be amended so that it isn’t provoking hate. I have reported it.

Have you ever pretended your hand is a plane/spaceship and zoomed it around going “pew! pew!” blowing up bad guys? Ever play a “bullet hell” game and thought it might be cool in full VR? Shooty Skies Overdrive let’s you play pretend again, and shows just how cool it can be. There are Power Ups to give your off-hand things to do (with full right/left handed support) and difficulty levels that live up to the name “Overdrive.” Progression, checkpoints and gameplay unlocks help keep things fresh, and let’s you tweak numbers to get the Power Ups you prefer. Nothing hugely sophisticated, but varied and hectic enough to keep me coming back for more. Bright but low-fi graphics means it runs like silk, even with a million bullets in your face.

This is a hard frustrating game, where I had to replay each level several times. I finally got through the first system (7 levels). As I exited the last level, the game crashed. After verifying integrity of game cache, I opened the game to find out I had lost not 1 but 2 levels. Since I played 6 hours, according to steam, and I played 5 levels, (according to the game) you can figure out how frustrating it was to lose 2 levels. I replayed the 2 levels, upgraded my ship, and got ready for the next system, only to have the game crash on me again. Now I am back on level 5 in the first system. Oh wait, no I’m not, because I uninstalled the game and it will take me a while, if ever to try it again. I did like the game, a lot, frustrating as it was to get through each level. However, the reason I kept playing was in the hope of moving on in the game and just maybe finishing it. (I’m sure all other gamers feel the same way). There is no replay value to 5 levels that I know the secrets and techniques to, and if I cant go on in the game past there, no reason to play it.

When I first saw this game I admit I was initially a little cynical given the over-abundance of Outrun/retro style of gaming. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great synth soundtrack pulsating over eye-popping retro visuals as much as the next guy, but it is starting to go the way of zombies. That’s why I was so pleased to find that the game itself is not only fun, but fairly innovative utilizing an otherwise under-explored genre.

Set in the eighties (when else?) you’re an arcade fanatic beamed up to fight for aliens thanks to your joystick prowess. So far, so ‘The Last Starfighter’. But yeah, let’s be honest and state outright none of that really matters. Once you’re in the game itself you’re hit with a six-axis Tron style grid based environment to navigate your ship around, shooting bad guys, collecting power-ups and orbs, and moving on to the next stage. Throughout the game you can also upgrade and buy new ships, which you manage through collecting neutrons and ship parts. Basically it’s all pretty straightforward and easy to get in to.

EDIT: 1/21/19 - I originally expressed hesitation toward paying full game price, but that was before I realized the FULL ACCESS version would be much larger, and almost certainly a better cost / content ratio. Yes, I think a bigger and better game will be more worthwhile and more fun game.

I paid full (sale) price (and I’m glad I did!)

This reviewer just spent 30 minutes playing Rainbow Reactor, and I had such a great time I (literally) had to force myself to stop! While perhaps not the world’s biggest fan of color matching games, I’m far from a stranger to the genre, and I have enjoyed it often while on Steam. Yet even in that context I don’t hesitate to take this opportunity to say that color matching through a combination of dexterity and strategy (mostly strategy, I’m inclined to think at this point) is just remarkably fun, and I sincerely thank the friend who told me about Rainbow Reactor.

I like this game. It’s a little more hectic than I expected but it’s unlikely to make you sweat. I particularly like that I got it at 67% off, it’s definitely a bargain at that price!

I completed the 8 levels of the main game in about 2hrs but haven’t managed to clear the bonus time stage. I also had a little teleport around. I haven’t tried SINGLE SHIFT yet.

The world you are in is well made and gives some grandeur to what is otherwise a quite simplistic game i.e. throw coloured ball in hole. However it does that very well. The colour blending (light not paint) works nicely, but they have clearly spent quite some time getting the throw of the ball just right.
