Thief Town

Thief Town

Thief Town is a perfect example of a indie concept gone right. It is one of the funnest local multiplayer games for my PC. There are not that many, but Thief Town stands out. It becomes a real blast as you franticly find and kill your mates, and the other gamemodes are creative, and don’t dum-down the experience. As a nice fresh concept, it is only local multiplayer. I am fine with that, the four-kids-cramped-in-a-basement gaming sleepovers I have settle the need for others. Grab some friends, get some drinks, and start stabbing! Soundtrack not only fits, but is 8-bit dubstep. If you like getting your friends for monaco, or even a nintendo game like smash or mario party, you will LOVE this! I heard the app doesn’t work that well, but I have controllers.

This is godawfully bad and should be burned with fire. No, sorry. Fire is too good to deserve contact with this game, and frankly it’s done a lot for the human race.

It’s an 8-bit wanna be E.T. Atari cartridge ripoff. Except that the developer of E.T. had vision.

It’s 2016 and the developer thought it would be a good idea to try to recreate the early 1980’s level of video gaming. Realistically, nobody goes out and says, I want to do my job, but at a level that’s 36 years more terrible than the status quo. Apart from the developers of Thief Town!

Gunman Tales

Gunman Tales

This is an old style shooting gallery game with some adventure/rpg elements added.

The game has 2 main modes. Arcade, where you just shoot your way through 12 stages + a boss at the end, can be done in 2 player coop and has some interesting power ups to collect from shooting chickens. You get 3 lives each stage, you lose is back to the start.

The other main mode is Adventure, where you have the same 12 stages + boss than arcade but also a world map to travel and collect resources that don’t exist in arcade (like damage improvements for your gun, armor, etc) and unique elements and dangers when traveling the map. This mode is made for 4 players competing for resources and the map pieces needed to finally reach the final boss. In a way its easier than arcade (if you know already how to gain your upgrades early) but with 4 real humans playing I am guessing it can be more chaotic and hard.

Awesome game. Reminds me of old C-64/Amiga days when developers made weird niche games that clearly don’t follow any normal framework on how a game is supposed to look like and instead go their own way.

This one is a 1-4 players turn based wonky ‘mini-games on a map’ kind of galore that is very much worth it’s price even when there are some annoying bugs. e.g. sometimes a AI player on the map gets stuck=fixed by reloading. or if you have your Steam chat window open then it can loose focus to it=close it. Small annoyances that have not been patched but are still not bad enough to sour the overall good experience.

Bombslinger

Bombslinger

Probably the closest to a legitimate Bomberman experience you’ll get to on PC, not just Steam, outside of emulation, and far more party-ready. The multiplayer is solid, and you can play online via Parsec (which I recommend if you’ve got a good connection for just about any local-multiplayer game).

The single-player is fun and has all the highs and lows of any other rogue-like game. Other than a few very rare bugs that can occur (especially frustrating toward the end of a very powerful run), the game runs very smoothly and without issues on a large variety of hardware. The bosses are extremely tough when starting, but are fairly predictable, and as a result this particular game is more consistent than most rogue-likes. The item variety adds a fair bit of strategy to the game, and it’s fun messing with different builds to find either incredibly powerful builds that will allow for an easy run or succeed-or-suck builds that are a huge gamble with the possibility of quick death or deft victories. I’ve put in a lot of runs on this game and it’s an excellent time killer with endless opportunities for fun during multiplayer. My only wish is that multiplayer would get more options for customization going forward. Other than that, the game is fairly flawless, and delivers on its promises excellently for both the experienced rogue-player and newcomers alike.

Pros:

  • overall the game is fun

  • nice art style

  • different builds are possible

  • some degree of replayability(different bosses, unlockable starting items, levels layouts randomly generated each playthrough)

  • not a lot of bomberman-like games out there

Cons:

  • the game starts slow. Your avatar moves slow, has one bomb with one title blast radius. I almost dropped the game at first, but struggled through the first couple of runs and luckily unlocked a couple of items which made the game less tedious

Wild Guns Reloaded

Wild Guns Reloaded

A major & faithful remaster of a steampunk, wild west themed SNES shooter.

The graphics & sounds have been updated, two new characters & stages have been added, the play area has been widened for modern monitors, and more added features. The only things they removed are the Bonus Stages and the VS. mode, which were both just bare-bones shooting gallery mini-games anyway.

Comparing the graphics and such to the SNES, it’s a vast improvement, or at the very least, more detailed. The music has been rearranged. If you prefer the classic sounds & music of the SNES version, you can unlock that option when you beat the game on any difficulty without using continues. The game plays well on both a controller and keyboard due to how minimal the controls were even on the original.

Absolutely great version of a great game.

It’s the original game but with widescreen resolution, up to 4 players co-op instead of 2, 2 new characters who play radically differently but still preserve the spirit of the game, and 2 new stages; but also leaderboards and achievements. The leaderboard really makes sense for a game like this where scoring is king, and the achievements are actually challenging and push the player into improving himself also.

There are some other changes to the gameplay as well. With widescreen, you’ll find more enemies on screen at once and scattered more all over, but the pacing is slower than in the original game, and stages last longer. Bosses also behave slightly differently, a couple of them even have a missing pattern. The bonus stages are gone also, but that’s not a big loss.

I think this will shape up to be an adorable game.

It brings out that arcade, old school gaming in you.

The graphics are adorable, the sound and music just plain fun.

Currently it is in early access, and needs some tweaking here and there.

I found the PC controls very awkward, and perhaps a controller is the way to go for this game. The time frame for winning a match is very hard, but could have been down to my inability to control using mouse and keyboard.

Overall, with a controller I think this would be a hoot, and challenging.
